I'm still not 100% satisfied with the updates, but I think it's
visually better than the original Tomorrow's Child ending.
What?! Did I just say that?!
Yes, I did.
The Cronkite ending was essentially just a bunch of video screens with silhouettes of children throwing balls, playing, etc. (The Apple iPod commercials are basically rip-offs of what Disney did in the 80s.) Then there were some vaguely scientific clips and...that was it.
The new triangular panels help restore that old-school feeling while letting us see ourselves in a fun, imaginary future. At least we're seeing ourselves instead of kids we neither know nor care about. Is the ending as grand as it would have been in EPCOT Center? No. But it's also not as tacky as the wand, either.
What changed my mind? My family rode it with me, and I suddenly enjoyed the goofy ending.
The narration is, however, still insipid; and the music is instantly forgettable. I think that most people fondly remember the Cronkite and Irons versions for their soundtracks, and that is where this one is most lacking.
Yet the ascent has never looked better...and kudos to Siemens for not slapping their logo everywhere like AT&T...this refurb is definitely a mixed bag.
p.s. The original reopening date was the 19th, so a few touch-ups (nothing major) will be done in the upcoming days. This will be followed by the big media event, and then...well...Imagination shouldn't be the least-visited pavilion anymore.
