Spaceship Earth reopening reports

Why...? (edit: in reference to star ceiling)

It's the old one.. or part of it. If i recall correctly, it's the suspended fiber optics between the two bulkhead type structures that make the arches - which is the original dangling starfield effect - then immediately after the second arch become the new effect which is the curtain material, which is the 3/4 surround (obviously not around the base where the track is).

Sure, take away my ability to be snarky to you. :p

Anyway, I think the opinion that the quality of the new attractions and refurbs has gone down over the years is just plain wrong. There's a couple things that have ruined the "magic" of earlier years (*cough* meet and greets and *cough* the dining plan), but I think the quality of the parks for the most part have increased as the technology has increased. What's changed is our mindsets.

Take Jungle Cruise for instance. Most die-hard Disney fans LOVE Jungle Cruise. It's a "classic" with sentimental value. But without those rose-colored glasses it's just a boring boat ride with poor quality animal robots to look at while corny jokes are being told.

Imagine if there was no Jungle Cruise and they just built a brand new attraction and called it "Jungle Cruise" and it was exactly what we have now - cheap robot animals with dumb skipper jokes. The forums would explode with disgust. What is this garbage Disney is making? Look at these crappy animatronics! It's an outrage!

Honestly, us fans only like Jungle Cruise because it's old and been there forever. Same with the original JII. It was SO corny, but we all loved it because we were all kids living out a fantasy at Walt Disney World without criticism when we first rode it and that euphoric feeling stuck with us.

In order to enjoy the new stuff Disney throws out there you really have to go in with the same attitude you had as a kid and let yourself be amazed and have a good time, regardless of what it is you're riding. Ride the new stuff with the same child-like, criticism-free view that you use when you overlook the obvious flaws on those old classic rides and you'll have just as good a time.

Disney had plenty of flaws back then too. We just CHOSE not to acknowledge those flaws because we just wanted to have a good time on our vacations with Mickey.

Disneyland's updated Jungle Cruise is amazing. The pirahna effect is really cool, and has no screen technology or projections.

And, go back and look at good quality videos of JII. It was a very well done ride, as was Horizons. Yes, parts would be outdated, but they were well done rides. Better then JIYI or JIIwF or Pooh or any of the newer rides we've gotten lately.

I just need a video of it because it is cool

Also, has anyone ever selected work as what they are most interested in? I've never seen what that scenerio looks like. We would also need video or pictures of what the language selection looks like, let what it sounds like.

I believe that these changes they made to the ending were planned already.

They opened before they were fully finished and people went crazy thinking they were done and that the ride was horrible.

No one saved SSE and I highly doubt that Disney was looking at these boards and said.."Hey..these people do not like ending and are going to riot..lets do something to fix the end before that happens"..

It was something I think was planned all along and people got their panties all in a bunch thinking the world was ending.:D

I give credit to Disney not anyone on a message board.

Also..if you go back to all the SSE Su cks threads you will see where a lot of posters said they thought they were not finished with the ending and peeople needed to wait.

So if we give credit to anyone besides the real people who deserve it..lets give it to them and not the people on this board who wanted to bomb SSE for a crappy ending.

Maggie, i'm not taking credit for anything, but there was a change in plan as far as I heard. That's why my pic report was optimistic, the team went back in to problem solve, address both sets of feedback (there essentially no middle ground as both tirian and my source said) and the solution was to maintain with modification.

Kinda "don't throw out the baby with the bathwater" but try to make both groups happy.

I was crediting Merf for encouraging people to write or call and complain. Who said anything about Imagineering reading these boards. You are just plain wrong! Seems I have really struck a nerve though. Merf Rules!

I was not talking about you Merf..Sorry if you thought I was.

I am talking about these people who think that someone on a message board changed a whole ride...maybe by hearing guests complaint they tweaked things but people are not giving Disney credit at all.

You did not stike a nerve at all.

I just think it is Disney that had these plans in place the whole time..and while Merf may have encouraged people to write and complain..it does not mean that he got it changed.

Like he even said earlier.."Why bring him up?"

Maybe the fact that you all worship him for speaking his mind bothers him also.

Maybe I struck a nerve with you by making you THINK I was bashing your hero:shrug:

Batter Up

Here...this is the average guests interpretation of Spaceship Earth during the Jeremy Irons version.

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=4264262

I'm suprised Disney didn't hire Wendy to narrate the new ride...that way the whole ride would be fun and enjoyable because honestly who really cares about where we've come from and where we may go when you can earth yourself! (i.e. elf yourself)

LMAO it's a spoof on the average guest.

Perhaps they could give "Wendy" a job in Jim Hills' new "Night Kingdom" and we can toss her marshmallos if we get tired of feeding the hippos. :D

Can you be more specific? I mean I really can't imagine that they had just planned to leave the descent pitch black dark with nothing to do or look at (which if I remember was the chief complaint) and that at the very last second they came up with this extremely high-tech facial recognition software that can be used on a moving ride and kinda threw it in there. I mean, weren't even the first reports of the ride saying that it took your picture at the beginning?

The only thing I can think of that guest feedback may have had an impact on was giving you a boring drawing of a city to look at instead of trivia questions while you wait for your future to load. I would have preferred the trivia myself, but I loved the ending anyway.

The photo-thing you experienced has been operating for a while. I got it back in early December previews.

This new closure added the triangular panels and added the final parts of the post-show (the globe showing the locations, the images of people's scenes from the ride, the siemen's generation 21 kids, the kiosks to send home your future)

The two seemingly added parts not part of the original plans are the kiosks to send home your future (which aren't up and running yet) and the added set pieces in the descent - both based on guests feedback from the previews. Both based on the descent, the most controversial part of the refurbishment. People loved it or hated it, and so design-wise they chose to moderate it. Make both camps happy by adding set pieces and allowing the folks who enjoyed it to send a copy home.

So seriously, adding the triangles "saved the ride" for the elite Disney fans? That just seems silly. That's what all the fuss is about??!

Anyway, the idea of sending your future home is so great. I actually told my dad when we got off that I wished there was a way we could email that clip back home. Instead I just took a digital video of it which we've shared a million times.

And that's why you're in that camp, and i'm in the other camp... You dont touch my triangle, i wont touch your kiosk.

I can not wait to see what you laughed so hard at Laura..

Well that seems fairly easy to do..
I will be sure to give my opinion on the ending when I go in 2 weeks..

You should meet me there Merf and we can ride together..:animwink:
