Space Mountain

Ok here's my 2 cents.

I would not change space mountain architectually. It has a pretty neat history. It's the first indoor rollercoaster in the world. Why need to update it so much? I agree with the idea of new lighting, sound, and better effects so we can say goodbye to the flying cookie comets, but it has a theme to it. You are in a 1970s apollo space pad, and they are announcing the arrivals and departures of their shuttles.

It's not just nostalgia, it's whimsicle in a way, and fun to look at to see how the future has changed, but you can still experience it. I prefer the pre and post show/que areas far better than the other Space Mountains. They[the news SM's] almost all look the same, and do the same, and yet I can't even really consider paris to be a true space mountain, it's almost like a rocking roller coaster.

So again, like it was said about the coney island cyclone...The oldest roller coaster in the world, which is in Lakemont, PA...goes under 20 miles and hour, it has no dips, and only a gradual figure eight incline. It is still a popular ride and people wait in decent lines to ride it. Why? Because it is the last of it's kind, it is pure nastalgia, and it shows how far we have come.

We have three other similar SM's why should we have to gut out and destroy the original? If you want those Sm's than don't ride the SM in WDW and go travel to see the other ones. As far as the track goes, I like the "I feel my head will come off" effect. Let it be jittery, and jercky, and all these little dips and fast turns. You may personally not like it. (so why ride it then?), but the original SM is hardly even over publicsed, and still draws in 2 hour lines.

I just want the track to be well maintained, the cars maintained, and new effects such as sound, audio, and visual. The rest should stay.

BTW was SM in WDW originally in total darkness? Maybe on special nights they should do that again. You'll have lines extending out toward mainstreet USA. :hammer:

Not a clone of DLP's...just something similar. WDW's mountain is much bigger, allowing for a longer, more complex ride.
And change the theme. No Jules Verne story with a Victorian cannon, make it more "Buck Rogers-ish", launch the trains through a giant laser gun or something.

You think Space is popular now....such a redo would make it a blockbuster.

You used to be able to ride it in total darkness? How awesome!

What else would be awesome, is to have special nights where you can guarantee to ride it with the lights ON!

Those crowds wouldn't just be strectching to Main Street, they'd be queuing from the monorail.

I remember riding it where the special effects tunnel's lights were all off. Like the blacklight room, the blue tunnel, the lift, and the red tunnel.

But the main area's lights were still on.

If there were to update SM though, I would just want enhanced themeing. Like make the asteroids actual props and for the star field, they should instal fiber optics everywhere so it looks neat.

I’m in the group that likes the fact this coaster has a retro feel. There are other full on thrill coasters in the parks to try, plus one on it’s way in Animal Kingdom.

I have also ridden the Paris Space Mountain. If you want to know what it’s like go ride Rock n Roller Coaster, they are very similar.

I’d like the track to stay the same. The addition of music and some lighting and effects changes would be nice, but don’t gut it just because it’s old. That would be like saying “ditch the WDW Railroad steam trains because they are old and replace them with Electric”.

Eh, trust me. If you don't think its very thrilling now, it'd be even more of a disappointment with the lights on. They do run it with the lights on at special after-hours events for cast members and such, and i guess it is kind of exciting the first time you see it. But you're not gonna hit your head :slurp: I can hold my hands up the entire time and be clear- there are a few parts where I can stretch outwards and touch, though. So unless you're 7 feet tall and ride horizontally, there's no real danger. :D

Does anyone like to drag their hands on the top of the Blue Tunnel like me?

Also, yeah, you don't need to duck and you can have your hands up the whole time. I have probably ridden this ride over 100 times and I know for sure.

While WDW's SM has a bigger building than DL's, it has two tracks (yes, there ARE slight differences, including track length, between the two) and DL has one, but the taller building at WDW allows for a bigger drop!

Another reason to keep WDWs SM. Why change it, because all of the SMs in the other disney parks are different. And ours is the first to open, and it has this uniqueness of its own. Just travel around the world to compare our SM to the others, and then you can enjoy. Or if you want some big thrills head to six flags, they got some good coasters.

I totally agree with keeping it unique. Make it like no other Space Mountain, but bring it into the 21st century. I have ridden the others...ours is sad in comparison, even to DL's old one.

Six Flags, I was there last weekend. Yep, pretty good coasters.
But nothing near what Space Mountain could, and should, be.

Space Mountain does not need to be a thrill ride. It is great how it is and is one of my favorite roller coasters ever. It beats out many Cedar Point and Six Flag's rides.

Yes, Space Mountain does need to be a thrill ride. A lot of those two-hour lines are people who have never ridden it before and think it will be much more thrilling than it is. Space Mountain, when it was the only coaster in the Magic Kingdom, was thrilling. Now though, it is a sad disappointment compared to what it should be. I don't ride it anymore unless, the line is less than 30 minutes or get Fast Pass. It's current state is probably keeping lines shorter than they should be. Give me a ride that deserves a 3 hour wait, and I'll believe Space Mountain is back where it is supposed to be.

You kidding? My whole family grabs fastpasses for that ride whenever we go to the park.

And then 30-10 minutes until closing I just ride over and over and over again. Space Mountain is so perfect as of right now. Altering it would be like making Spaceship Earth into a high speed roller coaster....

Lee, I disagree...

Lee, I think WDW's SM is superior in terms of capacity handling...I love the fact that there are two tracks and a lot of the cue is indoors. Granted the cars are half the size...but the cue area is better Lee...come on...DS's 'space port' sucks compared to WDW's and the loading area is very abused at Disneyland.

As per the ride itself, I would agree that Disneylands is stronger. But there again, the lift hills is disgusting in disneyland, whereas in WDW...its 'majestic'. Themeing is just as important as the track layout.

But for me the grandiosity of WDW's building helps make it a more imposing ride. Plus, our tomorrowland is confusing...a 19th century train pulls up...what's up with that.

Its a tough call...I think they are even.

wow. i would cry if they ever gutted WDW space mountain. I understand it's not thrilling, but i love that ride so much. Instead of gutting a great symbol of Magic Kindgom, and Disney World, build a new thrill ride. I understand that times past and it's time for an update on many things but really? Space Mountain? The classic? I would just build new thrill rides. Although many people love thrill rides, and I do too, I mean, Disney World is also about classics, fantasy land, characters, and space mountain is in there too. Space Mountain is a ride that almost everyone loves, and even though its not on top of the most thrilling rides, eveyone comes off of that ride with a smile on. I would never want this gutted.

Fo real. I would never want to see them change it just to compete with IOA coaster. MK is not suppose to be like that. Its suppose to be a fun park with classic disney rides, and too me thats what SM is.

I would not mind a track redesign, if they would keep 2 different tracks.... otherwise disney would change the ride to only one track and make it not be the materhorn of WDW....

I think the ride was just as good as the first time i road it....

It is still exciting.....

I believe a big reason behind this timing is the building of the Hong Kong Disneyland park. HK is getting the exact same Space Mountain as Disneyland, so since they were already manufacturing a whole new set of track for HK, Disney decided to duplicate the order and replace DL's SM track before WDW's. HK's was just recently installed and this week DL's track has been arriving.

... and it was rumoured that the on-board audio systems on DL's SM had put too much strain on the track, damaging it in the process.

Let me dispell this Matterhorn myth once and for all. I have ridden Matterhorn and Space Mountain Florida is NOTHING like Mattorhorn. Track alignment for Matterhorn is a constant drop (with turns) from the peak, no up-hills! Space Mountain Florida is SUPERIOR in track configuration, compared to Matterhorn, which is almost fifty years old now! And its age shows... I've never ridden a coaster so rough before... Matterhorn's tracks are so rough (from age) that you feel like your vehicle is about to be thrown off the tracks every second!
