Space Mountain

Dissing WDW's Space Mountain is a federal offense and a crime against humanity.

WDW's space mountain's ride design is perfect. Altering it or redesigning it would be like changing the Coney Island Cyclone.

Preference...

I prefer wdw's space mountain...the entry and initial lift hill at DL SM is dirty and tacky...the lift hill(s) are lame (I never thought of comparing WDW space MTN to Matterhorny - is there a half court up there in them stars?).

Is news to me that DL is newer than WDW's SM. I just assumed WDW was newer because I liked the layout more. Newer = better right? I prefer the pre and post show for WDW SM. The video for DL SM is SO outdated and again, very lame. Crazy Larry's Satellite store? WTH? At least you guys don' t have to deal with gerri-curl Mario Lopez telling you to 'buckle up'. No thanks 'AC'.

Anyway WDW'ers quit your griping...we have no post show...so I don't know what you guys are complaining about. Yes, we do have photo's to be taken, but at least your track 'finish' has lights and stuff that works...ours looks so bad...it looks like they duct taped commercial air vent grates together in a circle for the 'space port' entry look.

Yes, the music didn't work after some time, I think I heard it once, and it then broke down (my fault, sorry).

And Lee, why do you want a gutted new SM in WDW...messing with that track is like messing with something important...like history or something...be carefull...watch out...Would you want your track gutted every 30 years? I don't think so. Sounds painful.

WDW SM all the way!

New track every 30 years...ABSOLUTELY. After that many years a coaster track has outlived it's usefulness.
The coaster is just too tame. It's like a kiddie coaster. Space Mountain should be the pinacle of thrills, not a rickety, jerky, bumpy old ride.

Track design is not history. The concept and theme are history, not the track layout. Look at it this way...Indy could have been a dark ride like Peter Pan, but instead it features the latest in technology. Space Mountain should be updated the the best system available, to help it regain it's rightfull place as the ultimate coaster ride.

Can you tell...I hate that track.:fork:

I have decided to make it my lifelong mission to hate Lee. Anyone want to join in?

Space Mountain is a classic. And so what if it is not on the extreme side. There are many classic rides that are not of the thrill but people love them anyway.

now now,

Now, now, I don't think we should be advocating murder on these boards. Moderator?

Lee has his own opinion, and it makes sense...for Lee. He does have a point.

Win some, lose some.

DarkMeasures... I seriously think you are over-reacting to what Lee has to say. As much as I love the current ride, he's ride. Space Mountain is not the pinnicle of rides like it was in the early 90's. It needs a heck of a lot more than a 30 foot drop and a bunch of banked curves to be thrilling enough to compete. Shoot, I think the Flying Unicorn at IOA is more thrilling than Space Mountain. As much as I would hate to see the original go, it has a legacy to preserve, and right now it ain't doing it.

PS- Advocating murder is SERIOUSLY not adviced. Lee has a lot of people on these boards who value what he says, and challenging it might turn a lot of people off to you.

I'm not a moderator, but I'm warning you to watch it.

If you're gonna "Kill Lee," you'll have to "Kill Bill" first.

Good one!

Space Mountain really needs a refurb like DL though. Space no longer is that ride that you just HAVE to wait 70 or more minutes for. It's a really tame kiddie coaster in my opinion, and the track is really jerky. I still also hate having to duck my head, but either way, even if we did get a new track and stuff, i'd still have to do it. But I want something like DLP's Space. It's amazing just to look at. Everything it has makes it top Tokyo's, Cali's, and our Space. A launch, maybe a corkscrew, on-ride soundtrack, and some awesome special effects would make ours amazing. Something really needs to get done with Space VERY soon.

I really hope they completely gut Space Mountain and do something drastic to it. It's in dire need of an overhaul. I'd be quite content if they replaced it with a version akin to Paris'.

I agree. The ride is a pure adrenilin rush. I've heard DL's version doesn't have much of a drop. WDW's version has many surprise turns and drops, added to the darkness of stars and the light tunnels, it's just pure fun! If they can just modernize it and add some modern-technology effects, like the star field in Tower of Tower, I would be all for it!

Lee -- If you want a different track, then I say build another mountain! Why not? Just blend the architecture with Space Mountain's, so it looks like a natural 'peak'. Space Mountain would be the name for the mountain peaks, with each 'peak' having a different destination and storyline.

The thing about Space Mountain is I don't like that feeling that my head is gonna get chopped off...I hate that feeling, especially when I heard, and read about all the stories. Too many bars...Basically when I ride it, my head is down the whole time...:dazzle:

I agree in some accounts of those of you who wanna gut it, but I truthfully would HATE to see it be gutted.

I agree its old and somewhat out of date. I agree its not that thrilling whatsoever. I agree in the technology factor too.

But I would NOT want to see anybody change the ride whatsoever. I know many people outside of hte boards feel the same way. It isnt scary or thrilling, and It probably doesnt get first time Adult riders nervouse like these big time coaster do, but it still has these wow factors that I have NEVER experienced on any other coaster. WDW SM is my absolute favorite coaster on earth, I dont know if its disney, but I truthefully love it.

Another point why I think it shouldnt be changed, is because it is a MAJOR family coaster. This is Walt Disney Worlds first amusement park. The Magic Kingdom IMO is a family place, and SM gives a chance for kids over 5 to ride with older people. How would you feel if they did change it, and all of a sudden you began too see a lot of a none family audience being attracted to the park. The audience where teens be showing pda all over the place. I would hate that

All this is just my opinion:wave:

Those that aren't familiar with it, do some research on Paris' version.
It is pure Disney. Great ride. Great story. Visually stunning.
And far more "wow" factors than WDW's ever dreamed of.
Just looking at it, especially at night, is breathtaking.

As for little kids, the height requirement is only 4 more inches for RnRC. Not too many will be left out if they pump the ride up.

This site is a perfect resource for Space Mountain-From the Earth to the Moon.

Check out the documentary film. Fantastic.

Yea, Ive seen paris versian of space mountain, and it does look tight. But I would never want wdw SM to be gutted just to make a CLONE of dlp's versian. It is a classic disney attraction, and maybe in your opinion its a kiddie coaster, and maybe it is, but Its still a nice coaster, that people should be able to appreciate. Why change it, if theres nothin wrong with it. Its one of the longest inside coasters Ive been on in my life. Theres an exciting feeling waiting to get on the ride.

I agree with the person who said, just build another MT at another disney park. Make it bigger and better. I also like the DLP version to, and maybe they can add that in WDW somewhere too, but please DONT TOUCH one of THE CLASSICs:animwink:

In my view Space Mountain is in much need of a track redesign. I know how much many of you hate the thought of a ride you love being changed or tampered with. But believe me, this ride could be awesome. I don't want a clone of DLP's version either, but just think how cool this ride could be!

My vote is for a track redesign! :sohappy:

Nah - leave SM alone. It is the only true Tomorrowland `original` left (Cop apart)

Even though it did open in 1975 I think it still holds it together. Yes, the effects could do with an update. Yes, onboard audio would be nice. But it shows just how far ahead of its time it was if its nearly 30 years old and still pulls the crowds. Especially the first timers.

One thing - do they still have the large speaker sitting on the floor (in front of the mirror) at the end of the `blue` tunnel - just before the 180 degree turn into the lift hill?? I thought that was MAJOR bad show.
