Space Mountain Heading to the Scrap Heap :)

Okay I'm going completely off topic, but I don't care:

Are you serious?

Six Flags Great Adventure is one of the best coaster parks in the country. Just because a coaster doesn't have a theme it's "crappy"? Honestly I have no idea where you are coming from. Six Flags is not Disney. In no way shape or form are they trying to be Disney. They are amusement parks with awesome coasters.

I was just pointing out the lack of theme, which isn't my problem. My problem with SFGA is that it only offers extreme coasters and rides that spin. I just can't do those rides anymore I actually blacked out on Nitro two years ago. The only coaster that Disney had built that I can't handle are RNRC and California Screaming. I just wish they had something like HM, or any ride like that, or anything to offer someone that can't do the extreme coasters. The only coaster that doesn't make me such there are King Da Ka ( weird but I think it's the constant hills that do me in and this doesn't gave it) and run away train.

Head to SF Over Georgia, and check out Monster Mansion (aka Monster Plantation). It's SF best dark ride.

Yea SFGS was supposed to have five dark rides when it was just Great Adventure before SF bought it. The only one I can remener off the top of my head is Alice in Wonderland.

I've only ever been to SFoG and Magic Mountain, but isn't Monster Mansion the only Six Flags dark ride?
I grew up in Georgia so I remember riding that thing when it was The Tales of the Okefenokee. It was fun but boy did they improve it when it became Monster Plantation. Doubt I'll get over there anytime soon now that I live in Arizona.

As I said a few pages back, the distinction of heavily themed, lightly themed, and no theming should be made when discussing coasters. Of the coasters I've been on in this country, Space Mountain in Disneyland is the best heavily themed coaster. It has no inversions, no major drops, and is otherwise quite tame, however the effects and musical score make it better than the likes of The Mummy, or any WDW coaster (some would argue RnR is better, it's just a matter of opinion at this point).

Space Mountain is a Disney institution, it has been "cloned" at every Disney location, yet they are all unique. Although I've only been on the two in this country, my understanding is that what makes WDW's unique is that it's the worst of the 5.

With this refurb, we don't know what the improved effects are going to be. In the video I've seen of Mission 2 in Paris, it seems that their projectors have more than just the star field seen in Disneyland which intrigues me. The projections/effects/exterior on the launch and re-entry tunnel can also dramatically improve the quality of WDW's version. We don't know the scope of these changes - at this point it's mostly speculation. What seems to be the thing that is frustrating all of us is that this update does not appear to include on board audio. I think if it were to come out right now that an on board musical score would be added by November 22nd, then the mood in this thread would change dramatically. I'd take that even further and say that if we knew the ride was being prepped for on-board audio, but the new trains wouldn't be in effect by November 22nd that it would leave room for some optimism.

It used to stink in there until it turned into monster mansion. The big monster part kinda creeps me out and the music at the beginning sounds very annoying :lookaroun But it's still fun.Goliath is pretty fun too :D

Kinda true.
Audio has come to sort of represent all that this refurb could have been, but won't be.

That's simple though, Lee.

If most fans had made pre-redo checklists, you can be sure that onboard audio would be one of the bare minimums expected.

While some folks may gush over basic maintenance, I don't. And I doubt this is going to wind up being much more at this point.

The fact that the supports will allow for new trains with audio down the road means nada to me ... because I remember hearing how easy it was going to be to regularly reprogram Star Tours and Body Wars for new adventures and we all know what happened there.

Phil Holmes is never going to let them close this attraction down again once it's open.

 Laser Cannon? Yes!

You can't have a Laser Cannon! You'll shoot your eye out!

Hmmm. So making Space Mountain better isn't necessary? This looks like an argument for a Formidable Opponent! Me!

Servo, it's great to have you here.

It's an honor. You get that thing I sent you?

Ha ha! don't get me started! Anyways, have you heard they might not be doing that much with Space Mountain.

From who?

Well...nobody really, everyone is saying that.

So you don't know FOR SURE?

Well...technically yes, but it's pretty likely true.

That may be, but what you don't REALLY know can't hurt you.

What?

It's a relaunched.

So that means MUSIC?

No.

But you just said it was relaunched?

It was.

Then there's new track, lighting and such?

Maybe.

MAYBE!?!?!? Why don't they just say what you will or won't be doing?

Because what you don't know can't hurt you.

But why should I be hurt if it's relaunched? That means it's going to be bad right?

SHHHHHHhhh! Don't say that!

Why not?

Because everytime you do that, you're HURTING the rehab.

NOOOOO!

That just cost you new seats buster.

I'm confused...so we won't be getting a real big rehab, but if we talk bad about it we're hurting the rehab...that isn't really happening?

Oh, it's happening.

Then why aren't they going all out?

It's a classic right?

Of course.

You wouldn't want it to be bad right?

But it is bad now, with how out of shape it is.

Exactly, which is why it's getting a rehab.

But you keep insinuating that nothing will change?

Because it's a classic.

This is just circular logic...

Like Space Mountain...

Good point.

Let me put it this way, you like Coke right?

Sure, why not?

But aren't you getting a little sick of the taste?

A little. Where are you going with this?

Which is why I'm taking it away from you to change it.

MY COKE!

It's too late, you wanted it better.

So you're making it better?

Not really.

So it's going to be the same?

No, it's "Relaunched".

If you're not changing it, how can you call it "relaunched" then?

What? Soooo you DON'T want your newly Relaunched Coke, and want a SPRITE instead?

Ennnhhh, not really.

So you have no choice. See, it's all about supply and demand. You WANT a better Space Mountain Coke, so we oblige.

But you keep everything the same?

Because it's classic. And YOU don't want Universal Sprite.

Yeah, I guess....

Now what do you want?

Well, I want my Coke back.

Here you go, it's Relaunched.

REALLY!?!?! That's great!

*Takes a sip*

Kind of...tastes the same though.

That's because it's classic.

Oh, I see. Wow you did a great job keeping it classic...and somehow new!

Relaunched. Your welcome.

*takes another sip*

Mmmm...You can REALLY taste the classic. And YOU SIR, are a Formidable Opponent.

 Funny.

In my opinion, and anyone correct me if I'm wrong, the audio situation comes down to Disney knowing that only the fans will complain. Many people visiting Disney who have never really ridden the Californian counter part will not care that there is no audio, possibly even feel like there never was audio meant for the ride. The only problem really is the way Disney is trying to pitch this refurb. They expect regular guests to feel like less is more yet they are making this refurb sound exactly like we are getting something on the magnitude of Disneyland 2005. If guests read this and see this finished product (which I am sure won't be bad) and compare it to what was there before I am sure there will be alot of disappointment with guests. If not that, guests will most likely compare it to all of the new coasters in other theme parks that they will find "cooler" or "more hip".

Well...Sheesh. I don't know if that's the realistic view or the pessimistic one. Knowing Holmes, I could see that. However, what's going on with SSE ( and going...and going...) and if they had the trains and audio developed, which it seems they do, based on Martin's posts, it might happen. The ridiculous notion of them having a new ride every few years and plussing might actually appeal to them, when it would be so easy to just do it one big swoop.

[/start of thread drift]I havent had the luxury of riding anything since about '97. Yep. I drove over from Auburn with Sam one wednesday i think and the park was shut down for band camp. Errr. I was so mad. I havent been back. Scorcher, Batman, Superman and Goliath i need to ride.

You interested in some company? 2 hour drive for me. I have tried for the last 2 summers to get someone to go with me.... nobody here wants too. I had this dream day of SF at open till late afternoon, then a Braves game. Ill settle for the SF part. I bet i could pick up jackie on the way to ATL.

Just let me know if you ever need some company.

[/end of thread drift]

hmmm, SM. I love this ride. The loops are awesome.

We don't know the scope of these changes - at this point it's mostly speculation. What seems to be the thing that is frustrating all of us is that this update does not appear to include on board audio.

To expand upon what RSoxNo1 said---- many of us (me included) are so stuck on this audio issue, we're ignoring the other possibilities.

Yes, the DL rehab was excellent, and the soundtrack adds greatly to that ride.

But the butter-smooth track, pulsing music, and pitch-black darkness in California distract riders from DL's biggest flaw---after the ascent tunnel, there are absolutely NO visuals in the ride until "re-entry". (Perhaps there is a quick projection of a galaxy on ceiling. But if so, the encounter is brief and very forgettable).

Disneyland NEEDS the soundtrack. Without it, SM is nothing more than a roller coaster in a dark disco.

At least WDW has lots of visuals. The ascent is a feast for the eyes, with the overhead spaceship, the astronauts, the people in the control room, the rocket climbing next to you, the other rockets zooming past you in the opposite direction, and the occasional glimpse of a Peoplemover.

Once the coaster begins descending, you have MANY views of the huge ceiling dome and the projections on it--something that, due to space limitations, does not occur at DL. Sure, those 70's era projections were not very crisp or exciting, and the extra light leaking in over the years washed everything out. But there are so many areas where exciting visuals can be added.

My blind hope is that Disney will take advantage of WDW's unique building and track layout to really pile on new and better visuals that truly make this SPACE Mountain (instead of just DARK BUT MUSICAL Mountain).

This is certainly not an excuse for no audio. Amazing new visuals AND a soundtrack would be mindblowing.

But if done right, WDW's version has the potential to be the most visually impressive of the five SMs.

That is, if they do it.

in the video I've seen of Mission 2 in Paris, it seems that their projectors have more than just the star field seen in Disneyland which intrigues me.
You betcha - some of the planets are 3 dimensional, lit, spinning objects, some are projections onto spherical screens. The comet chase is actually a projection; as you get closer and pass under it the footage changes to suggest far more movement and speed than a prop could give. And the supernova explosion at the top of lift B is a projection - and way the music reacts to it is stunning. Speaking of which, have I seen the nova projection in Anahiem or Hong Kongs ride?

Phil Holmes is never going to let them close this attraction down again once it's open.
Hopefully adding audio wouldn`t need closure; setting up the audio zones and required tech could be 3rd shift, as could the adddition of a new fleet of cars. Even with T&A it may take a while but surely it could be done overnight? They`ve proved audio would work in Orlando so it isn`t exactly starting from scratch.
