South Africa: 2010 World Cup

Heading for the great escape.
The Scotts just cant get over their jealousy of England when it comes to sport. Instead of focussing their energy on being anti-England they need to use it to improve their own teams.

Thing is we know were crap and accept it. England on the other hand believe their own PR then wonder why they crash and burn.

On a historical note: It looks more and more likely that the trend of every World Cup being won by teams from Europe or South America will continue. The CONCACAF teams (US and Mexico) were the highest rated from outside those zones. Of the 12 teams left, only Japan and Ghana are from other zones.

US have come a long way quite quickly, they will continue to improve. Beasley was too lightweight for Scotland but I think Mo Edu will progress if he takes his chance. The nest generation need to be heading to Europe too, I dont think the MLS is strong enough to build international players, Scottish league isnt that strong but leagues like it are a good stepping stone.

European football has been spoiled by money. The big nations have an unfair advantage and use that position to strengthen their leading clubs so that the smaller nations have a tougher time getting their teams to progress. Its a buisness rather than a sport.

Steve mentioned how far Scotland have fallen in my lifetime. This is largely down to players not developing, unprofessional-ism and poor attitudes as the media hype anyone with a hint of talent and they young players buy into that image. The big teams in Scotland being broke may force them to develop more local talent rather than foreign players, this we hope will help the national disgrace (sorry team)

Other than that Irn Bru are running ads to get Scots to marry Brazilians.

Winning the World Cup has got to be one of the hardest things in sports. Since the inception of having 32 teams, only a handful have ever even been to the quarter finals more than once!! And I think we see more and more with each cup that while we aren't to the point that any team can win it all, there sure aren't any pushovers...well, except maybe for North Korea, but even they managed to confuse Brazil for most of the game.

Yes, England and Mexico got really bad calls, but I don't think it mattered in the end. Germany and Argentina were going to score when and how they wanted, that much was obvious. In the end, a change does need to be made in regards to goal line technology. It is already out there and would take about four seconds to be put in place. FIFA looks down right silly not making just this simple change.

US have come a long way quite quickly, they will continue to improve.

I think the US showed as will as they did despite their coach. Just too many questionable players, lineups, etc...not just during the cup but during qualifying and other comps the last couple of years.

Yep, exactly! I think we saw this clearly, as only a very few players on the US team play in the MLS. One, Donovan, is only there because he wants to be there, but that is going to change. Only question is if Everton or some other middle EPL club is willing to pay the huge transfer fee LA is going to ask. Findley had no business on the team, and Buddle, if he continues on form, will be gone for europe before long.

Its a buisness rather than a sport.

Sadly, as are all the major sports around the world. The fact is, there really isn't much of a difference between cheering for Manchester United, Liverpool and (cough, gag) Chelsea or Xerox, IBM and McDonald's. Yet, I still find myself doing it. :D

VIDEO TECHNOLOGY CONFIRMS ENGLAND ARE VERY BAD AT FOOTBALL 28-06-10 ENGLAND are heading home from the World Cup today after state-of-the-art video technology showed the ball crossing their goal line many, many times.

enggerm1.jpg
The cameras clearly showed the ball crossing the line for the fourth time
As questions were raised over why the Uruguayan officials had spotted all four German goals, the specially positioned cameras around the Bloemfontein Stadium confirmed that England's 2010 squad will forever be remembered as the 'team that never was'.

The use of television has been a source of controversy in the sport, but experts insist it offers a fool-proof method for determining whether a team is good at football or whether it is simply a collection of absurdly over-compensated, second-rate commercial brands with ghastly, vulgar wives, locked in a sado-masochistic relationship with a cretinous media that merely reflects a society that has taken its natural intelligence, its sense of perspective and its values and violently drowned them all in a bucket of ________.

Professor Henry Brubaker of the Institute for Studies said: "The technology is very complex and involves cathode tubes, a large glass screen and pretty much an entire roll of tinfoil.

"The operator sits in front of the screen and if he or she sees one set of players concede goal after goal after goal after goal, the video images then help them to decide whether or not those players are good at football."

Back home England fans vented their fury at the technology, as Paul the Psychic Octopus predicted Fabia Capello would soon be receiving a cheque for £12m and moving to a country where people can understand what he's saying.

Roy Hobbs, a flurry of opinions from Stevenage, said: "Alan Hansen kept going on about how it could have been 20 or even 25-nil and that if he had done that at Liverpool, Bob Paisley would have slashed him across the with a machete.

"But I think it could easily have been 70 or even 290-nil. Unless of course Lampard's goal had counted, in which case England would have won 14-2."

Nathan Muir, from Hatfield, added: "Not a good day. And after Sebastian Vettel beat Lewis Hamilton in the grand prix, I half expected to come home and find my missus having a dirty bath with the lead singer of Boney M."

Meanwhile, central defender John Terry finally arrived back in England's 18-yard box last night only to find that everyone else had gone home.

He eventually got out of the stadium after climbing over a fence.

^ Alright, that did make me laugh.

Tough way to bounce out for Portugal...giving up one goal in four games and still headed home. Maybe they should have saved a few of the 7 they rang up on North Korea for today.

So your two teams are paired up in the next round, Sak. Who will you be going for?

Wow!! Brazil sure did lose their cool...in every aspect of the game. Happy for the Dutch.

Even though they eliminated the US, I'm kinda pulling for Ghana this afternoon. It would be nice to see one African team make it close to the Finals at the World Cup played on their continent.

On a blatant handball like that, one that would have obviously gone in but didn't only because of the handball, the goal should be awarded. That's just wrong that the game ended up going to a penalty shootout and the team that didn't deserve the win, got it. Ghana should be in the Semis, not Uruguay.

Best game so far. Don't feel sorry for Ghana at all...they choked, plain and simple. Plus, the way the all flop around like they have had a limb cut off and then yell and scream at opposing players when they are on the ground...not classy at all.

Every team has players that flop on the ground and yell at the opposing players, that's not just Ghana. And if it wasn't for a hand ball where the guy blatantly swatted at the ball, not an unintentional one, then Ghana would have won the match 2-1. If someone swats at the ball in basketball to knock the ball out of the net before it goes all the way through, a foul is called the points awarded. That beautiful shot by Ghana got discounted instead and then yes, they choked on the penalty shot, but with a penalty shot, there's still a chance for the goalie to stop it when he wouldn't have previously.

I guess soccer has no equivalent of goaltending? If that's the case, I guess another basketball analogy is the "good foul"...hanging on a guy as he goes to the basket in order to send him to the line. Assuming he's a bad free throw shooter, that's a good sequence for the defensive team.

I guess it's the same for Uruguay. They blatantly broke the rules and got a red card, but as long as it didn't automatically result in the goal going on the board, it was a good tradeoff. The player who got sent off for Uruguay was basically saying the same after the game, that he felt it was worth it to get the ejection in exchange for stopping the shot.

I feel for Ghana, but if the rules don't result in automatically rewarding the goal on a handball save, what can you do? You have to say that for the defensive team, it makes sense to use the hand in that case. Maybe Ghana should have won, but missing three point-blank shots at the end (1 on the handball, 2 in the shootout) means they had their chance and blew it. It would have been nice to see Africa represented in the final four, but I don't feel like they were robbed. It sounds like they just fell victim to a loophole in the rules.

At any rate, it's now official that the trophy will remain in either Europe or South America as it always has. With Ghana out, I don't really have a sentimental favorite left.
