Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Discussion

Scuttle, I don't think there were ever any real plans on doing anything resembling the Matterhorn at MK. Some random people have said they wish to see it but nothing actually in the rumor mill.

This is neither here nor there, because it will never happen, but there were originally plans to add the Matterhorn to the MK. It was slated to be build kind of adjacent to the Small World show building, which is why the Fantasyland skyway station had a chalet feel. It was all supposed to be part of the same complex. The WDW Railroad would have traveled through it, and there would have been a snowy cavern with actual snow.

Of course, this was almost 40 years ago!

Haha...I say they should go for it and build it there now! Actually bring some life to the old Skyway building area again!

I'm guessing those plans predated Haunted Mansion and its location? Because there's like... Ten or twenty feet between the skyway station and the HM area (both onstage and backstage). Unfortunately, now Disney couldn't put a ride on the skyway plot of land even if they wanted to, unless it was something teeny like the carousel. :(

It's actually called Toy Story Midway Mania on both coasts.

When the hell did Toy Story Mania have a 5 minute wait?

I just feel like Midway Mania is a very elaborate way to have me interact with a computer screen in a very basic way (same problem I have with the ending of Spaceship Earth).
See, my problem with the SE ending isn't that you're interacting with a computer, it's that it doesn't have anything to do with communication, it doesn't fit the dramatic tone of Spaceship Earth, and it's just there to distract from what was once actual show scenes.

Actually, that was the plan after the park opened as well. I've tried to figure out in the past what, exactly, the layout was supposed to be. HM and IASW are very close to each other, and I've heard that the Matterhorn was supposed to be physically attached in some way to the IASW show building. I've never seen a rendering, sadly, but I've read old interviews with Nunis where they talk about it.

From a space standpoint, I could easily see the Matterhorn built on top of IASW. I have no idea if it would work structurally, but it would fit.

My question would be how it would look from standing in front of the Mansion. Would it look adequately far enough away without the pet cemetary hill dwarfing it.

I think SSE is one of those classic rides that very little can be done to update it. All of the communication mentioned in SSE exists. You can't talk about thinks that we've had for years and expect everyone to be impressed.

What you can do is sit back and enjoy a classic ride that people have loved for forever without really accepting the overall theme. If the computers at the end mean there is sponsorship money to keep SSE going, I'm okay with that.

(Of course, another example of this is PotC. That's a classic ride that was updated somewhat. Now all we need is a SSE movie.)

I had wondered about the perspective issue, too.

As for the structure, I used to know a long long-time Fantasyland manager who said that the IASW building had been constructed with that later addition in mind. Like I said, though, I haven't seen the plans myself.
