Selfie sticks - is this a thing at WDW yet? Disney clarifies policy

Where can Guests leave their selfie sticks?

We are encouraging guests to not bring selfie sticks to Disney theme parks. If a selfie stick is observed in the theme park, Guests will have the option of checking their device for pickup near the main entrance prior to departure or returning to the park after they’ve stored it in an alternate location outside the theme park (e.g., car, hotel room). Guests should visit Guest Relations if they have questions.

This is what I am glad about - this is a hard line. It's not "put out your cigarette" then they can walk away and five minutes later do the same thing. It's get rid of the device, it's not allowed inside the park. Because you know these turds would just put it away and pull it back out a few minutes later.

But will Disney escort the person to the check desk or count on them to do it on their own? If they're encountering these every 10 minutes, which I'm sure will happen at first, I can see them simply telling people to go check it.

So where does that leave us photographers who do use monopods and tripods? Are we still in the clear?

Only the large tripods and professional filming equipment are excluded. A small one (that does not have the dual function of being a selfie stick, as I'm sure we will find a few folks modifying their tripods to be) will be fine, that rule has not changed.

Ok, so I have something very close to this: http://www.cameta.com/Precision-Design-PD-58PVTR-58-Photo-Video-Tripod-with-Case-84345.cfm

I took this into EPCOT last year with no problems... I'd love to get Wishes or whatever night shows are there on the next trip, so I'm just making sure that it's something I'm able to take. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's going to be confused thanks to the selfie-absorbed, lol.

My source says escorts. Staffing will be up. Selfie stick person will have to wait if it is backed up. But with the announcements few should arrive at security with one. Once in the park sticks not caught at bag check will be confiscated and the owner will be given a claim check like a piece of luggage.

Jeez, there are much worse things in life to worry about then someone accidentally bumping into you while doing the wave. They're just enjoying themselves and having fun! Don't be such a fuddy-dudd!

While obviously not a big deal, I'm curious just how many times I should allow someone to keep rudely bumping me so as not to infringe on their enjoyment? Ten times? Twenty? More?

Whatever happened to common courtesy and respect for the other person? I'd much rather be a "fuddy-dudd" than a rude jerk to the fellow park guests around me.

If you have brought it in before, then you can bring it in now. They are mostly concerned about larger, non folding tripods. Your mileage may vary, however, as I have heard of a few getting stopped for tripods that aren't "small enough" (this was months ago way before the selfie stick issue), as its up to the security CM at bag check to determine what is considered a "large" tripod. Personally, I have never had an issue in over 4 years. The policy previous to this was worded the same way it is now regarding photography equipment.

Now, if you decide to use your tripod/monopod like a selfie stick, then you get whatever you deserve :)

Yeah, my camera bag has the 2 straps underneath and I'm able to clip the tripod to my bag. To be even clearer, I didn't tote the tripod around all day, just at night when I was going for fireworks. Otherwise it was in the luggage back at the resort.

Sometimes it's just very vague what they will and won't allow for tripods and such. Kinda like how every place has its own rules for camera policies...

Selfie sticks can be EXTREMLY dangerous on rides and should be 110% removed from people attempting to use them on rides. As for the general rudeness of walking with it … meh? It’s such a new to America thing sense and protocol haven’t kicked in yet. There are always going to be the inconsiderate down the road, but it’s no higher percentage of people that text and walk or people that take calls in restaurants or people that talk at movies.

The CM doing the intervention will take the stick. They will give a claim receipt to the narcissist. The stick will be taken to guest relations and can be picked up later when exiting.

Well, I think banning tours groups will get a large amount of support here. Strollers, on the other hand, will probably not garner much support for a ban. Besides, who wants to carry their 9 year old entitled princess from M&G to M&G.

While that may be true, Disney will never do such a thing because it will open all sorts of discrimination doors. That and the fact that the groups are a money bag.

Thanks for reading the whole post and picking up on the humor.
