Scrim Over TTA's Progress City

But...it's Walt's city of tomorrow! The ideas behind Tomorrowland, the inspiration that gave us EPCOT, and indeed the entire florida Project.

WDW and TL weren't conceived as showcases for 'cartoons with space theme'. These were brought in later by the vandals. The way the Acropolis was turned into a goat shelter by later, lesser rulers. TL is not about Buzz and big blue monsters. It is about a tomorrow on the move, about better living, about progress. About unbridled optimism and faith in humanity.

This is worth bumping. I always think that the best thing that Walt Disney ever contributed to the culture was his idea (seen clearly in his Magic Kingdoms) that we look to the future (Tomorrowland) with optimism (the dream of Fantasyland and Adventureland), but with a reverance for the past (Frontierland and Main Street, USA). Made for good balance.

I think these nods to the beginnings of EPCOT and The Florida Project should always be around WDW, for those who want to take the time to understand it. Understanding it certainly put WDW into perspective for me.

Very good. Love the analogy.

However, WDW has an opportunity lacking at other Disney resorts. Future World should be the "Tomorrowland" at WDW. That is where Walt's 'mission statement' would be better showcased (and maybe even a completely restored model of his CoT).

I really would not mind a SciFi City-esque overlay of WDW's T-Land. As long as Future World was restored to its original aesthetics. That, to me, when be a massive win-win.

There is no historical significance to such models. It just something that a few fanbois fawn over.

It's an appropriate little tribute to the ideas and ambitions of the man who founded the company. Ultimately it's something nice to look at on a relaxing, slow-moving ride that serves as a respite from the more thrilling aspects of the park but I suppose it is a piece of Disney history and as such it should be properly maintained.

The plane projection and the ferris wheel are the only things I remember having movement.

This is one of those places on a ride I wish I could break down at, so I could sit and check the model out for a while.
I am totally with you on that one. Id love to sit in front of that thing for a bit.

This particular model has significance for Disney parks. Fanboi or not.
Significance depends upon one's purpose and perspective. Of course the model is important to the Disney Company, the Disney Family and foaming fanbois. For most people, it is insignificant and it has no historic value.

I'd argue that the significance is there, but most guests don't fully appreciate it.
TWDC owns it and decided to chop it up to make it fit a display case. I wonder what happened to the other pieces of the model? Perhaps they are in the official Disney achieves. If so, that would indicate some significance. Model railroad buffs would love to restore this model. But for what purpose?

Perhaps they should rework TTA with short montages of Walt explaining progress city and EPCOT? That way, when you get to the Progress City model, but are not a Disney Nut, you actually know what you are looking at and the significance of it?

Where is the rest of the model? Also, Why don't they use a vacant Hollywood Studios building and turn it into "The Model" and let it house EVERY model they have for any Disney Park or idea.. It would get people out of lines and people would spend HOURS looking at them.

You sound like one of the many people working for Disney right now, TDO in particular who underestimate how important their product is to a great many people.

I'd love to see the "whole" model, reassembled at a dedicated area at Innoventions, and expanded with the entire Epcot story, from Walt's perspective to what eventually materialized. Heck, call it "The Epcot Story"...it would be a nice homage to Walt and his greatest dream.

If it couldn't fit in Innoventions (I don't know what space is available there), could it fit in the Odyssey? (since it doesn't look like the princesses are moving there any time soon).

It would be in a good place to connect "the experimental" of Future World and "the community" of World Showcase - and they already have old props from Epcot in there at the moment while they are upgrading the park passes - could they open the Odyssey as an Epcot Prop Museum? (or somewhere in Imagination?)

Here's Progress City:

As you can see, it was a commercial for General Electric. Walt's idea for EPCOT was for a revolving cheap labor force in his new city. He wanted to create his own dictatorship in Florida.

Stuff can be motorized easily. I isnt too hard, it just requires money and effort. And more effort than money. I actually want to build a wedway people mover for an HO layout, and it can be done using N-scale trains.
