Scrim Over TTA's Progress City

I have always loved that model and taken an interest in the E.P.C.O.T. information. The part of the model that looks like a fair with the ferriswheel-type ride always looked fun!

On Friday (the 22nd), I finished a rather long survey about the MK, regarding my recent visits to WDW. Two of the things I mentioned (at length), was how filthy both Progress City and the ceiling fixture in Mickey's Star Traders were (along with most of the rest of the ride). This was the first MK survey I'd ever had the chance of completing (usually its a Studios or Epcot survey that gets sent my way), so I made sure to make my responses count. I find it funny that the Progress City model is now behind scrims, hopefully for a cleaning. While I'm sure my survey is making it's way through the pipeline, it sure is a coincidence. Next time any of you ride the PeopleMover, take a peak at the dust build-up in the fixture that hangs above the center of the store. It's pretty disgusting!

I'd say it is not a coincidence. Way to go steve2wdw!!!

Sorry, I know it is not as catchy as "Way to go TDO!!!"

Hopefully Progress City is just getting the care and attention it deserves and will be back on view shortly. I love the TTA and that model is one of my favourite parts, it's always nice to see one of Walt's original ideas realised in some way and Progress City serves as a reminder that he was a genius who was years ahead of his time.

Progress City wasn't even all that new when it was new. It shares a lot in common with ideas presented in Garden Cities of To-Morrow (1898) by Ebenezer Howard.

One thing Walt Disney World fans tend to refuse to acknowledge is that Walt's attention had moved away from theme park design. He had moved on to EPCOT and had he somehow continue living, he probably would have moved on to other areas of interest.
He is right he was focused on making that city of a tomorrow a reality and not another theme park.

they are probably adding interactive elements to it

I doubt it. Think about this: no RIDE has gotten interactive elements ADDED to it. New rides, yes. Added to queues, yes. There's no reason to assume that this will be the first. It's probably just getting a much over-due cleaning and MAYBE, MAYBE, reinstating some of the old animation.
Question for someone cleverer than I: I know that the monorail cars used to move when the model was all in one piece, but did they EVER move since they relocated it to TTA? The only things I can remember that move are the plane projection and the double ferris-wheel.

I agree, clean it up. I love that model of the "city of tomorrow".
This is the only thing tangible from Walt's real last dream that never was... EPCOT. This is such an important piece of history that it should be in the hands of a historical society. It should be kept there, but put under lock and key so that only authorized members of a historic society could get in to maintain it.

Meanwhile TDO already chopped the thing up

Don't believe so, no. The mechanisms to make them move was hacked into when they sawed the thing apart. The self-contained ferris wheel was able to survive for a bit, but the slot car pieces were trashed and made stationary.
