Scrim Over TTA's Progress City

I just re-watched it (thanks) and nowhere did he say anything about dictatorship...
Dictators generally don't call themselves "dictators" (although a few have done so). Perhaps the term "autocrat" would please you more? With Walt, his power would derive from his charismatic sales ability (to attract and keep sponsors) and his power as the CEO of TWDC.

Progress City wasn't even all that new when it was new. It shares a lot in common with ideas presented in Garden Cities of To-Morrow (1898) by Ebenezer Howard.

One thing Walt Disney World fans tend to refuse to acknowledge is that Walt's attention had moved away from theme park design. He had moved on to EPCOT and had he somehow continue living, he probably would have moved on to other areas of interest.

The theme park for him transformed from bringing life to fantasy to testing innovation of tomorrow. He would have likely taken TWDC in an entirely different direction.

He actually wasn't the CEO, not that this matters to your post. Just figured I'd throw that tidbit out there. He was Chairman and President, while Roy was CEO.

Walt Disney Productions was already going in a very different direction. By the end of te 1970s it was the theme park business that was keeping the Company afloat. WED Enterprises was even branching out into transit systems, a division that would eventually be sold to Bombardier and form the basis of their ongoing people mover and monorail technologies.

Yeah I find it fascinating that almost anything the man thought of he went and did. That's why he was quoted saying, "if you can dream it, you can do it".

So where did you get your information again? It wasn't from Walt in that video....

All of your statements are inference on your part.

Don't state your opinions as fact straight from the horse's mouth.

Oops.. didn't mean it to sound sarcastic at all... Sorry... I have totally not ever been in One Man's Dream... Thought it was just a little movie so always skip it. Guess next trip in September I need to visit it..
There is a film at the end, but there is no obligation to watch. That said, I think its a good little film and worth the 15 minutes at least once.

No, its a very nice display of memorabilia that chronicles the history of Walt's life. There are props from ALL KINDS of things in there, miniatures of Disneyland's castle, the Jungle Cruise, Peter Pan's Flight...props from 20K Leagues (the movie), a Lincoln animatronic, the new FLE expansion model is there as well as the amazing Fortress Explorations model from Tokyo DisneySea

Much much better view of Disney's life and how it parallels his projects at San Francisco's Walt Disney Family Museums -- and even it color coats everything...Read "Disney War"...or "Realityland", for pretty good reads on Disney's role --

As with most that one posts, the mouth isn't the part of the horse he gets information from...:p

Your questions have been answered:

1. EPCOT residents would not vote (i.e. there would be no municipal elections).

2. EPCOT residents would not own any real property.

3. All EPCOT residents would work for TWDC and/or the selected sponsors.

4. Walt and his executives would run the operation and have final say on who could live in EPCOT.

5. Walt did not like unions and he would not allow a union shop in EPCOT (the state of Florida had anti-union right to work laws on the books).

6. It was Walt Disney's intention to set up his own private government and that's just what was done after his death.

These are all facts based upon Walt's own words and his documented actions.

He was the public head of TWDC. He was the head salesman. During Walt's life the public knew very little about Roy or anyone else associated with TWDC. And what the public knew about Walt was largely the product of the massive public relations operation of TWDC designed to make Walt shine like the brightest star.

It's a shame that a thread about a small piece of Disney history receiving some TLC has divulged into a "Walt Disney was an evil dictator" one. It's the same old boring stuff repeated time and again and it ruins genuine conversations about things in which people might have a genuine interest, in this case the Progress City model.

If I recall they didnt go with the city Idea because they didnt want to tackle a project so big and complex without the guidance of Walt to do it also the more I think about it the more that city and bio shock seem similar lol
Thats because both centered around creating a utopian city. Its an idea that dates back thousands of years, Walt might have been an innovator but he didn't come up with the concept.

It just goes to show that he was a very practical businessman. He was not evil. He wanted and got a big advantage over all of his competition through very careful and calculated planning. He used his political clout to full extent and he wasn't afraid to play hardball. It's unrealistic to think of Walt as just a great showman. He was a very shrewd and cutthroat person when the need arose.
