am I reading this right? if you book a vacation package with free dining you can't get park hopper tickets or can you still just pay the difference?

You must purchase a vacation package that includes a Disney resort room stay of at least 3 consecutive nights and a theme park ticket of at least 2 days to get the Free Dining discount. Of course you can always extend your stay, add days to your theme park ticket, add options such as Park hopper, or Water Park fun and more etc. Marie

I'll wait a few months to see if a room discount comes along like last year.

This statement right here is why Disney is going to have a very difficult time reducing the number of discounts they offer. The public is conditioned to expect discounts, and are probably less likely to book wiothout one. This is why Disney raised prices despite not offering anything new and the terrible economy. Not as many people are paying full price anymore. Even when the economy recovers people will be expecting these discounts.

Think for yourselfer

The declining by degrees theory. The more you discount, the less money you make, the less money you make, the less money gets reinvested into the parks. Free dining and the DDP as a whole has really hurt the dining experience at WDW. And all these crazy discounts are making it so that there is no downtime at WDW. No downtime leads to less real refurbs. Its just not a good situation.

Only on this site will people actually COMPLAIN about Disney offering discounts...

As for the discounts blacking-out days that kids have off, that is by design...obviously, Disney has no problem selling out their resorts around the holidays and Spring Break, so there aren't any discounts then. This is meant to increase attendance during the off season, and I think it's very smart. I also think it's smart that they are offering people different options depending on what kind of vacation they want to take. My wife and I are now considering a vacation in early January--this deal may just be too good to pass up on!

I'd rather see Disney have no discounts. Families with school aged children get a raw deal since some of our cost goes to paying for these discounts.

Discount or no discount, I would still go to WDW. Our family has gone yearly since 1997 (give a year or two).

Oh, and is the benefit of being a Florida resident when the discounts are practically just as great as people who live all the way in California! grr

I don't think Disney is trying to be more "fair" or "unfair" to anyone.

I think Disney's business decisions are based on the laws of supply and demand.

Can't you go during the summer, or take your kids out of school for a short while? I also highly doubt, that the elevated prices paid during the hodilday (Christmas, Easter, etc) weeks make up for money Disney is discounting on the other dates.

When you're offering discounts like crazy, it means that you're having trouble bringing in people at your full prices so you have to do something to reel them in. Personally, I'd rather see WDW spend money on new attractions to bring people in at full prices than lose that money through park discounts that will bring people in to ride the same rides because it's cheaper.

Good point, but bringing in people to ride the rides is not the same as bringing in people to the parks AND having them stay at your resorts, especially with the full rack rates at many of the deluxes.

Saved $119 at Boardwalk

I had a single night booked before starting the Grape Getaway in a Standard view. There were no discounts available for that class of room, but upgrading to a Water view got me a refund of $119. I love discounts [still hoping for an even better saving with an AP discount]!

Available dates for free dining. Children are still in school at this time.
5/27/11 - 6/2/11 and 8/19/11 - 9/29/11

Also, I would never take my kids out of school. Education is more important than a trip.

I'd rather see Disney invested in more rides than passing out discounts that only some can take advantage of.
