Detracting from the show is basically anything that would cause a guest to look at something other than what Disney has provided for entertainment. Thats why way back when Disney was known not to let people in with long hair etc. The company can be fairly hardcore about this at times.

As for this situation, the CM did his job and a manager was contacted to over-ride the official policy so that all bases are covered.

I`m also wondering why they even have a no costume rule?
Here in Ohio at the Cedar Point and Six Flags worlds of adventures amusement parks, they have halloween weekends in October and they encourage people to wear costumes, even having costume contests. They just don`t allow masks.

The rule was placed into effect right after 9/11 due to heightened security measures. It was apparently decided that costumes allowed too much of an opportunity to conceal inappropriate items and bring them into the park.
I must say Disney since 9/11 has been very concerned with security and has made many many changes to their property to insure guests safety both visible and not so visible. I can't say that I blame them given their status as an American Icon and symbol.

I guess it's all in the way you look at it! I've run into WAY more rude guests in WDW and Disneyland, where I've had to remind myself "I'm on vacation, don't let this numbskull ruin it". As far as the language barrier goes, that much is (for me) entirely forgivable.

Then again... my mother says I'm the most patient person she's ever known.

Yes, I agree that I have had more rude experiences with guests than CMs. Who hasn't patiently and perfectly picked the spot for the parade, waited there for the longest time, and had their family wait patiently, only to have another guest come along ten minutes before the parade and feel that they are entitled to your spot? I know the one time a lady from New York City (I have many friends from New York City who aren't like this lady) came up with her stroller and rammed into the back of my mother who almost fell completely down off the curb and told my mother she could stand over there because she wanted the spot! I told the lady to apologize to my mother and go find another spot or I would get security and have her moved and pressed with assault charges. The lady said the she "had the right to this spot." So, I started to walk away towards a security guard off in the distance, and the lady gave a big huff and fit and left. I'm sure this is the same way that she deals with CMs. Why people think that everything is an entitlement or right nowadays is absolutely ridiculous. Guests like this one ruin the day far more than I have ever had days ruined by cast members and I'm sure CMs can say this about these guests as well. Too many people are getting too self-righteous and rude and it's got to stop. I think that society is rewarding the rude and wrong people too much any more. If this lady had politely asked for some front space for her children, my mother wouldn't have had a problem moving around behind my niece and nephew. But too many people don't know the meaning of polite anymore.

I have always wondered what it is about Disney parades that Turns normally nice people into complete morons! Last time We stayed to see the spectro magic parade the people there were the rudest people I have ever encountered, so much so, that my nephew got so P.O`D that he left and went back to the Condo. People were running into him with strollers pushing himOne lady even yelled at me to move forward so she could see and I Couldn`t because of the person infront of me and I told her so and she yelled at me and told me that she can`t see, so I said to her "and you think I can? "and she flipped me off.

Like Darth I found the rudest person to have been a guest at a parade. I had pushed my mother’s wheelchair into one of the spots reserved for wheelchair users to watch the Studios parade and taken up my position behind her. What normally ensues at this point is to have a chat with the guests adjacent to you.

This time however a woman, who for the sake of this post will call “Cow”, says to me, in a voice dripping venom. “You HAVE to move!” I look at her with an expression, which would have been a mixture of surprise and disgust at her attitude. Cow then continues, “She won’t see the parade”, indicating at an elderly lady in a scooter. I’m thinking that it’s rude to the elderly lady to be referred to in this way.

The scooter lady either decided (or more likely was ordered by Cow) to surrender her scooter spot to a stroller filled with kids, whilst she was parked at the very back of the area – where the able bodied people will stand.

I realise I can not get across in words just how abrupt, rude and offensive Cow was, but trust me, she was not a pleasant example of the human race. The elderly lady had the decency to look embarrassed. I put Cow right by telling her “I don’t HAVE to do anything, except maybe remind you of the magic word”.

I think this took her by surprise – someone not caving in to her demands. Once her puzzled look was over, she mumbled the word “please” through gritted teeth. I think the scooter lady got some enjoyment out of this confrontation as well and ended up enjoying the parade.

As an aside, as Darth mentioned in his post, not all New Yorkers are represented by the lady in his post. The best time killing we had waiting for a parade was in Magic Kingdom chatting to a group from New York, a more friendly courteous group you could not wish to meet.

The Cm wasn't wrong in this case. Officially, adults were not supposed to wear costumes to Mickey's Not so Scary Halloween Party (post 9/11 change in policy) and also officially costumes are not to be worn in any of the parks at all. However, during the halloween parties the MK cast was permitted to use their own discretion so long as the costume wasn't offensive. At Epcot, where the guest was entering the park, the rule would still apply that no costumes were allowed because it detracts form the show.

Sometimes, CM's are portrayed as rude when in fact they are just enforcing the rules. The reality is if CM allows a guest to do something that breaks the rules, the CM can be disciplined up to and including termination. However, if the CM attempts to enforce policy and the situation escalates then a manager will almost inevitably be contacted. At that point, the responsibility transfers to the management and it is difficult if not impossible for the CM to be disciplined if something happens in relationship to the situation.

Attitude on both the CM and the guest's part can play a big part in how a situation is handled even with management. The cast members are people who deserve respect and dignity just like everyone else. Keeping this in mind can often make the difference between a pleasant discussion and a situation that escalates.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT...AGAIN!
Of course adults were allowed to wear costumes to the MNSSHP...it was encouraged as long as they didnt offend or were frightening to small children, especially on HALLOWEEN NIGHT!!!....reread your memo. On the "OFFICIAL" website of Disney it stated as such when you went to purchase your MNSSHP tickets for 10/31/03...otherwise we would not of gone through the trouble of dressing up.
Also, there were MANY who wore costumes throughout EPCOT that day who were either passing through it or who had entered through the front entrance of the park...during the ENTIRE DAY of Halloween. So, you see, YOUR WRONG....but thanks for your input.....
We obviously were allowed to go through...and lookie here...we didnt "distract from the show?"....whatever that meant! What show he is refering to....I DONT KNOW....LOL I didnt think a adult in hula skirt could "distract from a show" at EPCOT....if so, perhaps I can open up my own little kiosk and sell some tickets! Who needs a job!!!

PS....95% of the adults at MK were dressed up! That is what Halloween at Disney is all about!!! I guess not every cast member had a stick shoved up a body part that day and allowed all the ADULTS entrance to the part without being turned away.

I believe its also called....um....DISCRIMINATION!!!!!!!

WAY BACK WHEN, people with long hair weren't allowed to work for Disney (still aren't) and couldn't go to parks. It hasn't been too long since CM can have mustaches.

I said what? She said we are not allowing anyone with costumes in. I said, what about the children...she said they are allowed. Now mind you we were NOT in a full out costume. We had on grass skirts (shorts underneath) and a tee shirt- hardly a costume by any means....she said we needed to use other forms of transportation like the bus. I told her, listen...I am paying blah, blah, blah per night at the Beach Club, I AM going through EPCOT to get to the MK via the monorail whether she likes it or not, I told her to get her supervisor on the phone, cause ____*t was gonna hit the fan....she got on the phone and 2 minutes later...we were allowed through. What the heck was up with that!!! I could see if we were in some all out costume with masks etc...or even offensive costumes....but heck all I really needed to do was take off the skirt and I wasnt in costume anymore....so really it was a dumb move on her part to agrivate a PAYING GUEST with stupidity!! I wonder where they get these people sometimes-or maybe she just left her brains along with her Disney attitude at home that day.

It seems like you over reacted. I really hope you didn't curse in front of your child. Like you said, all you had to do was take off the skirt.

Most CM will follow directions that they have been given. I really doubt she did it just to aggravate you. I bet that she was just following directions that someone gave her.

Turkey boy....am I reading this right?? People with long hair are not allowd in the parks? I always have had long hair and ever since 82 on my first ever visit..I had long hair....never had an issue getting in the park...that is simply wrong...and unheard of. I can see mustaches and employement...and maybe even long hair...but how long is long...down to your butt is too long...but long in general...shouldnt have any issues as long as you wear it up somehow...ponytail, bun etc. I could also swear I have seen cast members at EPCOT with long hair..especially in the world showcase...i.e belly dancer in Morocco...and some that work at the Tangerine Cafe...have long hair.

So, I am just appauled ... that is all....appauled that such a monopoly as Disney can get away with such discrimination.

No He is NOT saying that!
What he is saying is that When Disneyland first opened, People were not allowed to work for or allowed in Disneyland parks if you had long hair.
Even today some places still go by this standard. In the company I work for a guy I know was denied a high end position cause he had long hair and a secretary was demoted for getting her eyebrow and nose peirced, beleive me when it comes to apearances discrimination based on apearance does NOT apply to private companies. Specially if they want to adhear to some sort of decorumn.

I believe that it only applied at DL, by the time MK opened in FL, that entry rule was removed.

ok, I can understand that....I can understand that body piercings...on the face can be a policy...and long hair on men...sure....I go for that...but when it comes to long hair on women...that is what women do, (some of us) ... have long hair...that is where I dont see it...but if your saying he meant by MEN having long hair...than okay....Disney, you can deny employement. Business is business and an image is an image that Disney is trying to portray.

Thanks for clearing that up. :)

Mia...

even though you eased off.. you really need to learn to lighten up. I did, and so did many of us... it really makes the boards more enjoyable. And don't post thinking that people are going to disagree with you and vice versa. The rules of life apply here as well.

I did get her name and I did report the incident at Guest Services...cause I was ed.

Geez, you're EXACTLY the kind of person I try to avoid when visiting WDW. Try taking two seconds to FREAKIN' RELAX..

I'll also assume you're the type of person who feels "entitled" to everything, no? Sure sounds like it here, and you're the one telling the story. You should have altered your story to make yourself, at least, SOUND like a sane person.

Ok, I stand corrected. Costumes were and are allowed at the MAGIC KINGDOM for the party according to the website and one internal flyer. The other MEMO i saw must have been reprinted from years past. Personally, I dont see a problem wearing costumes to the Party either, I was only reflecting on the incorrect information I had received.

The rest of this post has been deleted because someone once said something to the effect of pick battles you can win. Unfortunately, I am not even sure who declared war.

I know I'm going to regret this, but here goes nothing.

For every guest who feels that a CM is being rude, there is a CM who feels that a guest is being inconsiderate.

There are many types of rules; legal, moral, social, natural, and business/school. People respond to "rules" in one of three ways.

There are those who assume that there must be a good reason for the rules to exist, and follow them as closely as possible. (People who set their cruise control to EXACTLY the speed limit, so they won't accidently go over it.)

There are those have carefully thought about certain rules and decided that no harm will be done if they will try to "bend" them, but are willing to accept the consequences and abide by them when their transgression is pointed out. (Speeding comes to mind)

There are others who question ALL rules, and ignore those that inconvenience them in any way, but become angry when their transgressions are pointed out.
(Again, speeding comes to mind; these are the people who will argue with the cop about how "everyone else was speeding, too!" etc., etc.)

Most of us fall in the middle, and generally follow "rules" but do ignore or bend some from time to time. However, we generally KNOW that we're doing it, and KNOW that the rules might be enforced, to our detriment, and don't argue with those who are only following policy (even if WE are unaware of company policy!)

Some CMs are just better at delivering the bad news than others.

When I was working, I would "bend" the rules on visitors from time to time if the visitors were not disruptive. However, there were also times when I followed the visiting hours/number per patient to the letter! If the Nursing Supervisor was on the floor, you'd better believe I was more of a stickler! If you were the latter visitor, and a member of group A, you'd think I was very professional for keeping EVERYONE'S comfort in mind. If you belonged to group B, you'd think I was a bit of a stickler. If you belonged to group C, you'd think I was a real . Funny thing is, you'd ALL be right. ;)
