"Rapid Fill" Mugs Coming to Walt Disney World Hotels

Be careful admitting that around these parts. You're cheating the system.

I hear you (it wasn't me, I'm just replying) but if the coffee and tea carafes don't use the rfid system, then I think people who bring back mugs from previous visits aren't really cheating the system, since until the rfid (Rapid Refill) system, those mugs were supposedly meant to be usable forever. In other words, if they'd done this a few months ago, no one would have said they were cheating the system.

Also, they don't limit you to 3 drinks an hour from what I can see (on the fountains), just the two minute wait between fills. I can try the 3 drinks thing tomorrow and see if that is the case.

People have posted video of the 3-drinks an hour system at the fountains in action - but this is with the purchase of a regular soft drink, not with the reusable mugs. Sorry if I was unclear.

You are still not supposed to bring back old cups to use for your current visit. It is still stealing if you do not purchase a cup for your current stay and take the coffee and tea. This is why Disney had to put in the RFID because of the "if they don't catch me, it's not stealing" mentality. There is no problem with a person bringing old cups back for plain water(water only) and the lemons are there for someone who purchases TEA, not for someone to grab a bunch and put in your free water to make your own lemonade.

Just to clarify, IF they ever were meant to be brought back forever, it was very, very early in the program, meaning many years ago. I say if, because so far, no one has come up with viable proof that they ever were designed that way to begin with. No documentation, no agreement forms, no promotional smoking guns. Even if they were it was for just the resort that one was staying at when they purchased them.

Just as soon as one of the neophyte imagineers or food planning people were able to eradicate their heads from their butt cheeks, that little offer, if it ever existed, was killed off. Since that time, any purchased before that moment of Disney enlightenment, were honored but any mugs sold after were sold as length of stay only. A campaign of ignorance happened after that with people justifying the use of them on subsequent visits as being what Disney intended. No matter what name one puts on it, stealing is stealing...they have to live with it and sadly I'm sure it's not bothering any of them at all.

So, as far as I am concern, the fact that Disney went to the trouble and expense to change the system to prevent pilferage, that it should be pretty good proof that it they never intend to have people just take things on a continuous basis.

Didn't someone post a sign from when they sold them that said forever, or something?

Couldn't find one that says "forever" (not doubting that it may have existed at some point)...

Found plenty that said "Unlimited refills during your length of stay at (insert report)"

This one is pretty old (look at the price and mug styles)

We got our first ones at CBR probably in 1990, and I am absolutely positive that it said they were good forever there. I remember packing them for subsequent trips the next few years.

That sounds like the likely timeframe. We got our first at Wilderness Lodge in 1997, and I know we were told length of stay at that time.

Yeah, but how many people are legitimately still using a 22 year old plastic mug? Or is it people buy new ones and justify their belief knowing the program USED to be that way? We do know they have been length of stay for a long long time. Longer than I bet the age of most mugs people actually use :) People think they bought into some perk for life...

Umm...that's clearly called stealing! Any company could prosecute individuals for such activity if they desired. Might be a little more subjective if using a company provided cup but not this!
Geez!!

Yup seen this guy at the Contemporary at first thought he was a maintenance worker purging the machine

For some reason I can't remember - can you bring the rapid fill mugs into the parks and get refills? I think people said you can, and my first thought was, if I get one of those mugs, I'm not lugging it to the parks. But on second thought, I probably would throw it in my backpack - I'd save more on refills in the parks than I would at the resort.

You have the correct thought process. According to the press release and the video the ultimate goal is to get the rapid refill cups into the parks also along with other venues. It stated that first it has to get into the resorts and they stated it will take a while before it enters the parks. Ultimate goal is taking your cup where ever you go. At that time the beverages will be discontinued as part of the parks dining plan quick service. There wasn't a hint of when the machines would make there way into the parks or how they would pull this off.

I have 4 of the forever mugs. And yes it was marketed as never having to purchase a refill mug ever again.

Joy, Why the h--- does Disney have to 'Monetize' every last detail of the experience, Disney like most content providers chose the most unfriendly limiting path to solving the problem, The best way would have been to build drink cost into hotel stay say add $5/day to hotel rate , Sell resort specific mugs and possibly limit fill to 16 oz, and activate the fountain by using KTTW or 'Mouse Arrest Band' This would have been a fine perk for guests and gives people a reason to stay at Disney as opposed to the hilton.

If the mugs were priced at say 7.99 people WOULD buy them and you would not have the overhead of the entitlement database and back end for a soda machine.

Have you been at disney when it's to and you're dehydrated? Or very hungry? The current mugs don't even hold a cans worth of soda. Or iced tea, water, coffee, etc. then add ice. It's not hard to gulp down an entire mug while still standing in front of the machine. I've done it.

I haven't tried the RR mug with water, though if you are dehydrated, you really ought not be drinking soda. but we all know that....

that being said, i know the mugs we got at the water parks fit a lot of ice and a can of soda just fine (since I am using mine at home for that, and it fits pretty much a cup full of ice and the soda, or alternatively most of crystal light to go mix. tho, at the parks, i almost never used ice. if i did, it was hardly any. all beverage.

the length of stay mugs that we got, i don't use hardly at all. partly because it doesn't hold as much, partly because it's less stable on my desk than the big water park option, and i like avoiding spills :)

I believe that $7.99 was about the price of the mugs some 23 years ago. We stayed two weeks during those years. The first ones we bought were forever mugs and we brought them back several years in a row, then we just bought new ones 'cause lugging 4 mugs in a suitcase when flying became stupid. My favorite refill mugs are our Dixie Landings Song of the South mugs.

I just can't imagine wanting to lug a mug around my whole trip and through the parks. The only one who might would be my DH. But by the time they do this in the parks they will need to have a new mug design cause these things are going to tip and leak all over the attractions.

What I was thinking was resort themed mugs, different for each resort like the old days as a souvenir, but have the soda as a room entitlement and you can use whatever container makes you happy to put soda in

There are actually theme parks that do just that. Part of your admission price. Really cuts down on their garbage too.
