Understanding some things in a foreign language does not make a person understand everything, as I believe we've discussed here in other threads. Personally, I can follow movies in a variety of foreign languages that I don't speak...if you know a few key words, it's pretty easy. Cursing is another thing that is pretty easy to figure out. Often times, even when things are dubbed or translated into different languages, English curse words are left in English. Even those who do know basic English may not understand the English words "Go to the end of the aisle." Personally, if I were to go to a foreign country, the words I would learn would involve food and bathroom facilities, not theme park instructions.

Similarly, it is not particullarly necessary for Brazilians to learn English to visit WDW. Many (if not most) Brazilians speak Spanish, which is widely spoken all over Florida. Even those who only speak Portuguese would likely be able to understand a fair amount of Spanish, as the two languages are pretty similar.

Bash line cutters, loud people, people who stop in the middle of rows, and people who are just plain rude all you want, but I don't think Disney boards are the place to be espousing stereotypes. With all the things you could disparage people for, why chose to dwell on what language they do or do not speak?

It's time to Learn Brazilian with Mr. Yensidtlaw1969!

Lets say it in english first.

Repeat after me.

Hello, could you please move all the way down to the end of the row? Thank you.

Good, good. Now, lets all say it in Brazilian.

Repeat after me.

Olá , poderia you por favor muda até em baixo à fim da linha? Muito obrigada.

Ok, that was good, lets try it again.

Olá , poderia you por favor muda até em baixo à fim da linha? Muito obrigada.

Better. Now, does anyone remember what that means? No? It means "Hello, could you please move all the way down to the end of the row? Thank you."

Very good class, that is all for this weeks lesson. Don't forget to do your homework!

Just a observation here....
Foreign tourists who claim not to understand or speak English when asked to do something (move all the way across the aisle, sit down, etc.) but yet, they understand every word of a movie or a show that is in English....does this seem weird or is it just me??? :veryconfu

It aint just you. I would have no problem if you didn't speak a word of English at all--that doesn't bother me. Even when they don't have a translator--still doesn't bother me. There are tons of CMs around the parks who can speak the other languages.

I was working at El Pirata bussing one time and there was an older guy wandering around the plaza looking clueless and holding a map of EPCOT upside down. Funny, right? Okay, I really felt bad for him. Turns out, he spoke no English at all but French, was seperated from his family, holding the wrong map. Me, not a word of French. I radioed to another busser to go grab the guy who was working as a steward (cleaning trays, washing dishes). I didn't know his name, but remembered he spoke Hatian Creole which had a lot of French roots so we were able to help him out and get him a correct map.

The people who speak English but pretend not to understand it are just rude. When you catch them understanding or speaking English though, the reaction is priceless and makes the punishment a little more humiliating for them. I guess what I'm saying is that the people who can't speak a word of English should look for the CMs who can speak their language. That's what the language pins are for! Even something as simple as a guest aproaching me saying the language they speak, in English--I'd at least be able to help them out by finding a CM that speaks their language. Okay, I have no idea where this post was going.... :)

Labatt, your post cracked me up. Mostly because when I first went to Montreal (I went to college in upstate NY and made many trips there, mostly for the delicious and potent labatt xxx and molson bradors), I brushed up on my french so that I could translate for my friends. Of course, the first local I spoke to (in french) replied something to the effect of 'why the hell don't you just speak english.' Everyone else I spoke to during all my trips to Montreal preferred english to French. But, it could've been my shoddy french ;)

Thank you for bringing this up! I find most of the time that there is only one adult to every 30 teenagers! When ever you get a group of teenagers of 5 or more together they go a little crazy.

While I generally don't like being around large tour groups of any size at all I some times find them amusing. I also try to remember that most of these kids will never get to go to Disney World again and are mostly bursting with excitement but because there are 30 of them it gets a little out of hand.

I also think that maybe we should stop saying that they should lean to speak English and that maybe we should learn to speak there language.

It's not the Brazilian part that's the problem, it's the teenager part that irritates me. You put a bunch of 13-19 year olds ANYWHERE and they're going to bug the ____*t out of anyone who doesn't fall into that age range.

They are immature. Fact. Not all of them, but if it's a group and their parents aren't with them, then they are going to be disrespectful to others.

We were also in WDW last week and had the experience of the rude Brazilian teenagers! In LARGE groups to boot! Many yelling at each others groups, chanting and stomping, pushing and shoving, and totally rude. I told my neighbor who is from Brazil and she told me that basically these teenagers go on a 26 day tour of United States during July while they are on their winter break. Many of them come from very weathly families. They spend up to $1000.00 a day for each person thanks to their families ATM card. No supervision, no parents and just immature spoiled brats! Now that I know this, you might not see me in WDW during July again. Too crowded and too hot as well! To those going in August....you will not see them then. They go back to school! LOL

maybe not the best thing to do, but when people sit in the middle and dont go all the way down, i do tend to step on feet and trip over people. :) . I also have been know to kick packages as well, much to the dismay of my wife. Hey, make a inconvience for me, i will do the same.

The only issue with doing that is you might whack an innocent person. If the middle fills up because others don't move down, some people will sit down because they did not know the others did not go all the way down or simply because they just sat next to the others because they did not want to use your technique (warranted or not).

But I agree, it makes me angry when the people who are the first to enter the row don't go all the way to the end...

How can some people NOT see a pattern here?

Why is it soooo frowned upon to truthfully state which tourgroups cause grief? It's not slander, not even opinions. It is factual based on the many many MANY complaints.

Do we say ALL Brazillians or Brazillian tourgroups are notorious? No indeed. We say the tourgroups that are notorious are Brazillian. D O Y O U U N D E R S T A N D ? :hammer: :brick: :hammer:

I think you put it the best way. There would understand what Kryssa is saying on the Tv back in the rooms.

Count 'em all.

what is the population of the magic kingdom?

if i'm not mistaken, it doesn't specify who is a citizen and who is a foriegner.

walt disney intended his parks for everyone, not just the ones who speak english... and i'm pretty sure he wouldn't have condoned ankle kicking and the vandalism of automobiles.

speaking of trends: "they should behave or we will inflict physical violence upon them" is a pretty popular trend on these boards. i now understand why i see more "w" stickers on suvs in disney parking lots than anywhere else!

Absolutely NOT!!!! What country are we in??? Answer: The <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com />United States of America</ST1<IMG class=inlineimg title=

The national language is American. NOT Brazilian, Spanish, Cuban, or anything else. If you travel to their country then yes, that is the time to learn their language, if you want to become a more educated person and learn lots of other languages then by all means do so, But just because these foreigners come over here doesn't mean that we should bend over backwards and try to speak their language.

Is the Deceleration of the US is <ST1:pwritten in another language? NO.. Is the US Constitution written in another language? NO... On the Ballet cards when we vote, what language are those written in? Answer: American!

Therefore American is what should be spoken when you are here. <O:p</O:p

Last friday I was in the Magic Kingdom, and before seeing the parade, my family decided to go see Philharmagic.

We waited on line, eventually made it into the preshow area, and eventually entered the theater.

All of you know that the 3D shows are timed, and there is a certain amount of time for people to "select a row and move all the way to the end."

Well, many groups of people who do not understand the English language, including a Brazilian tour group, decided to seat themselves in the middle of the row, leaving a backup of people on the entrance side of the theater.

Even as the people who followed the rules told these rude people to move down, they laughed..

Well, on its timer, the show started, and people were starting to move around the back of the theater. With this movement, someone hit something, and in the middle of the Be Our Guest scene, the movie abruptly cut and the screen turned red.

The cast members had to call in a mechanic, and the one cast member decided to ask Disney trivia questions, and sing. She should keep her day job!

Her singing was horrible, and the trivia questions, such as "Who is Mickey's dog?" were easy enough for two-year olds to answer.

Finally, after an hour of sitting in the theater, the set started to move back together slowly, and the show restarted. Hey, I couldn't complain, I was sitting on a comfortable chair inside an air conditioned theater on a 95+ degree day.

It is a great show, but I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this type of situation?

I know this cast member you speak of, and that day things were very rough for her while she was working Philharmagic. Some people criticized to her face about the wait time (it wasn't her fault), some condemned her singing. Some people get the urge to turn angry the minute they walk into the park. And those 50-foot obnoxious teenage Brazilian tour groups that snake through the parks like densly-packed anacondas, slithering over everything and everybody :fork: ( I blow off some steam just thinking about them  ). And you have a point about the air-conditioning in the theater on a hot day. If I was working Philharmagic that day, and I had an opportunity to be frank to a room full of bad guests I might have been realistic and said "where would you rather be, in here in this air-conditioned theater or outside, where its 95 degrees and probably getting hotter."

But my point is this: when a ride breaks down we try to entertain you as best as we can. Sure, we can't all croon like Sinatra or tell certain good-looking guests to back that thing up (not that any cast member would so dumb to try that :zipit: ). Like, for instance, when I do a welcome speil from the tower at Small World I now say it like Elvis, and tell guests that maybe later on we can go pick out a cadillac at the end. And I sing Beatles songs to guests over at Pan Merge when the ride breaks down (yes, I truly can sing and do love to sing like John Lennon. Friends and family tell me I sound like him) But, alas, that is the end of my act. You can stone me next time your in the parks if your don't like my act.

You are correct that we should enjoy the magic. And I hope people don't actually physically hurt others. However it doesn't change the fact that not moving all the way down in a row is extremely rude and is not following directions. It also drastically effects the efficiency of seating people when only half the theater can fill up and others have to climb around because some rude and what I would call ignorant and immature guests refuse to follow directions.

And as far as I am concerned a guest that does not sit where he was told on a ride such as RnRC, or does not move all the way down in a row should be kicked out of the park. I have seen way to many guests get assigned a specific row on rides such as RnRC only to on there own get in row 1 instead. This only confuses everybody and should not be tolerated. It is just as bad a skipping everyone in line.

Haven't you been told enough that political comments are frowned upon? Why do you continue to post them?

I live in the metrowest suburbs of Boston and we have a HUGE Brazilian population... all the ATM machines here have instructions available in Portugese. But I find that the majority of the Brazilians here speak English extremely well. I also find them, as a whole, to be very hard working and enterprising people. I've never encountered a group of Brazilian tourists at WDW... the folks that I've found most offensive on my trips in the past have been English speaking teenagers and preteens from the UK--especially at Typhoon Lagoon... I always think of those from the UK as very proper and polite people...but its those unsupervised minors that wreak havoc... (not to mention that many of the young ladies insist on wearing micro bikinis and belly rings when they are a good 20-30 pounds over weight!). But I don't want to make a sterotype. :) I think someone hit the nail on the head--it's the unsupervised kids that are rude and crass... and if left unchecked...those rude and crass young people grow up to be rude and crass adults...

I've really never had any of these problems...but I'm the geek that strikes up a conversation in Spanish with the waiters at San Angel Inn... :) I found myself at a distinct disadvantage when I visited Barcelona... I thought I was all set with my Spanish...then find out to my dismay that they speak Catalan...which I can barely understand... furthermore... I am told I am rude for not speakign Catalan when I try to employ my Spanish there (which pretty much everyone in Barcelona knows). I had learned back in highschool Spanish class that they speak a different dialect...but truly it is another language all together!!! And I was never sure if I was better off with English...or to show that I was TRYING with my Spanish. :)

If I moved to another country you can be sure I'd learn the language fluently... If visiting a non-English speaking country...I would surely bring a electronic translator and learn some basic phrases... the problem being that you can learn the phrases to ask questions...but you may not always understand the responses you are given quite well! :)
