Problems with Philharmagic 7/22

I live in the metrowest suburbs of Boston and we have a HUGE Brazilian population... all the ATM machines here have instructions available in Portugese. But I find that the majority of the Brazilians here speak English extremely well. I also find them, as a whole, to be very hard working and enterprising people. I've never encountered a group of Brazilian tourists at WDW... the folks that I've found most offensive on my trips in the past have been English speaking teenagers and preteens from the UK--especially at Typhoon Lagoon... I always think of those from the UK as very proper and polite people...but its those unsupervised minors that wreak havoc... (not to mention that many of the young ladies insist on wearing micro bikinis and belly rings when they are a good 20-30 pounds over weight!). But I don't want to make a sterotype. I think someone hit the nail on the head--it's the unsupervised kids that are rude and crass... and if left unchecked...those rude and crass young people grow up to be rude and crass adults...

To a point, I'll agree about the unsupervised teenagers.... Most teenagers will act rude and obnoxious if unsupervised.. However, these brazilian tour groups are supervised.. They have a tour leader and at least 2 chapperones (all adults).. These adults should control the kids but they don't.. They let them run wild, always turning their head to look the other way... I was at Fantasmic once, in 2002 actually, and there were two or three large groups of brazilian tour groups.. All the kids started chanting USA SUCKS... Their leaders joined in... Of course this led to chants of BRAZIL SUCKS and GO BACK TO BRAZIL.... Could have been a messy situation, but the CMs started entertaining people and the BRAZIL SUCKS chants quieted down, but the USA SUCKS chants continued... Obnoxious brazilian tour groups chanting that, not unsupervised British or American teens

I thought I was all set with my Spanish...then find out to my dismay that they speak Catalan...which I can barely understand... furthermore... I am told I am rude for not speakign Catalan when I try to employ my Spanish there (which pretty much everyone in Barcelona knows). I had learned back in highschool Spanish class that they speak a different dialect...but truly it is another language all together!!! And I was never sure if I was better off with English...or to show that I was TRYING with my Spanish.

I'm glad you brought this up -- I think those who are claiming that people are "pretending" not to understand English may have never had such an experience. I had studied Spanish for years and years, but the first time I tried to have a conversation with a native speaker, I couldn't understand a word he said! I could speak the language well, but I had no clue what he was saying. :brick: Maybe he told me to go to the end of the aisle .

The national language is American. NOT Brazilian, Spanish, Cuban, or anything else. If you travel to their country then yes, that is the time to learn their language, if you want to become a more educated person and learn lots of other languages then by all means do so, But just because these foreigners come over here doesn't mean that we should bend over backwards and try to speak their language.

Please tell me this is a joke. If so :lol: . If not...umm... I'm not very good at ballet. I look silly in tights. Three of the four languages you mentioned are non-existant. Voting ballots are generally available in multiple languages. If there's a choice between being well-educated and being able to help "foreigners" by speaking their language, and being completely unable to help them, I'll choose the former.</P>

Stockboy, I agree with you... How are is it to follow directions? How hard is it to walk to the end of the aisle? I prefer to sit in the middle, but, if I am one of the first into a row, I always move down to the end of the row... People that don't, NO MATTER WHAT LANGUAGE THEY SPEAK, are just rude, ignorant, and lazy... I don't feel bad if someone steps on their foot...

While we're on the topic of incorrect generalizations I'd like to point a few things out.

English is not the national language of the USA. The USA does not have a national language. However, the majority of the people in this country speak one of two languages: English or Spanish. In Brazil, the national language is I believe just Portuguese. Rather than have multilingual people (who I'm sure would want nothing more to do with their talent/knowledge) operating these attractions, general announcements before each ride in English and Spanish should alleviate most of the problems. Because most "Americans" feel that the nation should cater to them and that the nation is composed of 100% English speakers, it will undoubtedly cause an uproar if every language under the sun has a pre-ride or pre-show disclaimer. However, if (As mentioned previously) cast members can learn certain key phrases such as "Please move so other people can enjoy the show." or "If you don't move, I'm nailing your feet to It's a small world, and you'll have to sing the annoying song for the rest of the eternity". Many of these problems would be solved. It's conceivable also for CMs to have nothing more than a placard that says what they want in the guests language of choice. Simply bring it over and make them read it.

I also have to add, that anyone who doesn't go move all the way to the end of the aisle is a total idiot. I mean, come on!!! That's what this thread sums up to. I don't care what language you speak, how hard is it to figure out that you're supposed to go to the end of the row?? If I were in Disneyland Tokyo, I wouldn't know what they were saying, but I would definitely know to go to the end of the aisle. :brick:

Was this tour group all wearing yellow T-shirts, I was at Disney during that time period and I probably encountered the same group as you did. They really where the worst group I have ever seen. I understand you do not understand English but it's not an excuse for yelling for 5 minutes in a line, pusing past people, and holding up lines. With groups like that you really just have to do your best to not let it get to you and ruin the magic.

Yeah... so how about Philharmagic. I saw it for the first time on my trip in January. My favorite part was Ariel reaching out her arms. Best 3D effect ever. Very powerful...

Man, no one is reading my posts at all, are they? It's easier to speak a language than to understand a language. Study a new language for a while if you want to experience this first hand. Many non-native English speakers do not understand precisely what they are saying, especially since simple phrases like "USA sucks" can easily be learned by watching TV (soccer matches, perhaps?). I don't think it is appropriate to accuse people of pretending not to understand a language...I dare say it is insulting.

I know most of this has been said already, but I am going to say it again. 1) There is no official language of America. Chinese is just as official as English is. 2) There is no such language as Brazilian...it is called Portuguese. 3) You cannot generallize Brazilians and you CANNOT generalize teenagers. Most teens (me included ) are very good. It is the minority that are just downright stupid (this is true in my school too). The fact is that you will notice the bad people, but you will not notice the good people. If a Brazilian Teenage tour group comes down and they are not wearing the shirts and are not being rude, you will not notice them, and therefore, not see that all of these people are bad.

So, it is ok since they may not understand English very well, to sit there and be rude, obnoxious, not listen to the CMs, and degrade the country they are visting??? Umm, I think not... If you didn't understand French, would you go to the Eiffel Tower and start welling FRANCE SUCKS??? No you wouldn't.. You would respect the country you are visiting and it's people.. Wold you stop in the middle of a theater when you are told to go to the end of the row?? No, you wouldn't.... Whether they understand or not, following the rules is not so hard... I am not saying ALL BRAZILIANS are rude and obnoxious.. I said the TOUR GROUPS ARE... And I never said AMERICAN is a language...

Regardless, anyone who stops in the middle of the row is rude and inconsiderate...
