Looks like Disney is looking to make its money back faster. They already posted a DVD release for March 16th. Usually it's at least 4 months before movies come to DVD. The thing that caught me off guard the most is that they are offering a single blu-ray version and a three disk blu-ray set. I didn’t think what would happen to blu-ray this soon, since it's still kind of expensive for one blu-ray disk. It was nice to get a little extra for your buck. March is going to be an expensive month for me since they are putting out PatF and Toy Story 1&2 on blu-ray a week apart. Thank goodness for tax refunds;)

Great! Then there's a chance I can see the PatF show on our March trip!

*Hi-ho, Kermit the frog here, the worst CGI (not just CG) film I've seen has to be Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. It was a terrible movie. It was too short, monotonous, and dumb, just plain dumb.
**"Frog's Law" (my law) states that movies are always released on DVD/Blu-Ray 5 months after they were originally released into movie theatres.

Not always. It depends on the studio for example Night at the Museum 2 came out in theaters on May 22th, and was released to DVD on December 1st, same with the new Terminator movie. The opposite of that would be for example Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs came out in theaters on September 18th and was release to DVD on January 5th, four months later.

PatF officially pased the $100 million mark this weekend!

Not too bad considering we were originally thinking it would land around Atlantis or Hercules. Hercules was actual considered to be part of the second "golden age" (which ended with Tarzan) so this movies does fit in that category. Although, it's VERY far from being an Aladdin or TLK. Still, $100 million is not bad and I think Disney will be satisfied in the end.

Meanwhile, Avatar is 6 million away from overtaking Titanic as the top-grossing domestic movie of all time. (It already has the global title.)

I know we were speculating that Avatar might be a beast to go up against, but sheesh...I definitely didn't imagine it would do this well. I still can't psyche myself into going to see it.

Avatar definitely put a dent in the PatF and it might have been released too close to Christmas, but it has topped 100 million domestically and will probably reach 200 worldwide that is far from a flop, and kids movies, especially Disney movies, always have better than average DVD sales.

Coupled with the critical acclaim there is no way this movie kills the traditional animation department.

The DVD release is early to capitalize on the Oscar buzz. It will get a best animated feature nomination and possible win, will definitely rack up some song and score noms, and might even get a best picture nomination--they expanded the category to ten this year and want to get a diverse pool.

This may not have been the huge killer hit every studio hopes for with almost every movie, but it is far from a failure.

Per Box office guru TPATF is now at 178.6 worldwide. So I think we can safely say Disney has recouped it's investment in ticket sales or soon will.

From now on it's profitable including DVD sales. So I think we can drop the "failure" spin.

Looking at it positively: Not a failure.

Looking at it realistically: Not an impacter.
