August is the perfect time for drinking around the world;)
The heat. The humidity. The blazing sun. The time I took Phil to WDW for his birthday in September, we both almost died of heatstroke. And then the resorts have those energy efficient air conditioners that turn off in the middle of the night. It was like Disney was trying to murder us.

I lay out in the sun around noon:joyfull:

Hello all, looking for advice.

Late last year my youngest niece came out to me as lesbian. We’ve always had a special bond, I’m legit proud of her for always being herself, and flattered that I was the first person she came out to after her parents (before her siblings even).

Anywhoooo, this is her first pride as someone who is out, and I wanted to get her a little memento/gift/keepsake. Does anyone have any recommendations?

What is she into? Jewelry? something else? Collectables? As with any gift start there and go with her style. If she's modest in taste keep it more simple. I think these are cute as heck View attachment 720650 View attachment 720651View attachment 720652 Said as a former teen girl
Just a quick search on Mr Google turned up some nice earrings and necklaces ranging from demure to loud and proud. Go with your gut as you know her best
I do love the Christmas ornament, I’m getting the Mickey one. And then it “comes out” 🤣 every year! Also: love the story about you and your niece.
August?!? Are you trying to kill us???? LOL
It's practically September! In all seriousness, we often go either the last week of August/first week of September and it's really not bad. Plus there's always a lull on Labor Day and a few days after.

You’ve already given the greatest gift, acceptance and love. Anything else is a cherry on top.

Her style is... I guess would be femme tomboy? Tomboy staples, but more form fitting fitting with splashes of pink, and occasionally wears dresses.

She likes Disney for sure, but the rides, not necessarily all the IP. Her life right now is volleyball and hanging out with her friends. So I may need to dig deeper.

Also: love the story about you and your niece.
Family comes first.

Coincidentally, she's got celiac disease, so I also overnight her gluten free treats from bakeries in Orlando (she's in Miami) whenever I see something she might like.

Maybe we will meet there one day, I’m definitely planning to go next year. Hope you had fun!
It's the first time I've ever done a true weekend WDW trip. I had fun and it was nice to get out of NC for a bit. It was weird being in town without a car, though it did help me save some $$$ since I wasn't able to hit up my old watering hole in Ivanhoe Village. I'll be back in August for my sister's bachelorette weekend. Hoping that's the last trip without my husband in tow...

I live in Miami too! Having celiac is rough in this city given that so many bakeries have yet to adopt anything GF - at least the ones I visit.

What about a simple but nice pin she could put on a bag to accessorize while celebrate who she is?

Plenty of watering holes on property! Gee, @BuddyThomas maybe that’s why I don’t notice the heat - the Tune-In Lounge is air conditioned! 🤣 Plus we take a hotel break in the middle of the day (between parks.)

That’s surprising! I live in Fort Lauderdale where almost all food is meh.
Well there you go, you live in Broward the cheap imitation ;)

Tbh it may just be Ive grown up here and have bias, but since I spend half my time in Orlano I know that most often than not Miami has the better food especially when it comes to my culture (Cuban) and other Latin cuisines.

In case you’re the area some quick recommendations!
  • Isla Canarias: Two locations but both serve their croquettes, their ham croquettes in particular are award winning alongside one of the few items I break my no pork policy for. I’ll note that if you’re in Orlando that Jaleo/Pepe have chicken croquettes approved by my family.
  • Finka: They use the affromentioned croquettes for a croquette pizza that’s unique and to die for.
  • CAO/Vickey/Party Cake Bakery: I love their cheese tequenos and for their price point remain some of the best I’ve had. Of course if they’ve been out for a bit then their quality will go down.
  • El Novillo: Do you miss the ambience of Mexico Pavilion? Then this is the restaurant for you! It’s a Nicaraguan restaurant with the interior being a small village with a fountain in the center and occasional live music. I call it a Disney Lite experience ;)
  • La Michelada: Phenomenal ice cream down in Homestead with reasonable prices and homemade quality. Their menu is massive with sundaes, shakes, churros, paletas, savory snacks, etc.
  • Knotts Berry Farm: Don’t get it twisted with Knaus Berry there are no rides here but the lines are longer! This seasonal location has some of the best sticky buns I have ever had hands down, to the point I happily waited close to 8 hrs outside for them. They reopen in the Fall.
  • Other fruit stands/farms in Homestead: Beyond the freshest local produce possible many locations sell fresh fruit shakes perfect for besting the heat. If you’re heading down to the keys I can’t recommend enough to pick something up here for the drive. In particular if you havent had a Batido de Mamey (Mamey shake) I recommend trying out as its a relatively common fruit in SoFlo but not in many other places north or south here.
  • Bombay in Coral Gables: Phenomenal Indian food at a heftier price, but worth it. Very authentic while tailoring to the Latin/American populace that typically cant handle spice. I loved their Hot Butter Chicken and Aloo Samosas.
  • Bakan in Wynwood: Solid upscale Mexican food in the Wynwood Art District.
  • Dasher and Crank in Wynwood: If you want something other than Salt and Straw I recommend this ice cream locale.
  • Night Owl: Renown for their late hours (till 2 AM) this place has creative cookies and monthly special flavors. @mkt they have Gluten-Free treats here - haven’t tried them but if their anything like the regular ones they’re solid! Multiple locations throughout the county.
  • La Carreta: Simple Cuban food at relatively lower prices, can be found all throighout the county and even in the airport. Quality can vary but I enjoy their Arroz Imperial.
  • Mi Rinconcito Mexicano in Little Havana: Yes this area is known for its Cuban history but this hole in the wall not only has low prices but phenomenal Mexican cuisine. A phenomenal Horchata to be had here, and their Tacos de Pollo en Salsa Chipotle was phenomenal. Im not a taco person but they were delicious and filling. Their queso fundido is mediocre and I rather have dessert at nearby bakeries/ice cream parlors as we walk the streets taking inthe ambience.
  • Tap 42: A local chain that has locations both in Miami-Dade and Broward. A solid brunch location as their chicken and waffles are amazing and their Lychee cocktail is phenomenal. Special mention to their pitchers which were great too.
  • Aromas de Peru: Another local chain, I love their Arros Chaufa - Peruvian Fried Rice and they have Chicha Morada a purple corn drink worth a try.
And thats all I can think of off the top of my head there’s way more of course

I don't know your budget, but something like this would be nice.

Etsy has a lot of Sterling silver Pride jewelry for less money, but still very tasteful.

I'm thinking in terms of something that she would like wearing now, but still could wear for the rest of her life.

Great reviews, also one of my favs is Versailles on Calle Ocho, locals, rich and famous love this Miami Cuban eatery . I'm hooked on the rocket fuel drinking all day long, cafecito, Colada, cafe con leche while in South Beach also.

The NY metro area isn't too bad and I've even been able to find edible pizza but general bakeries are abundant:inlove:
Learning to make your own pasta and eggroll/dumpling wrappers solves several issues;)
Aldi while not having a large selection of item has a line called Live G Free most of their items are decent. The pasta is one of the better ones out there(rice quinoa) and not too pricy
Schar rolls are ok for diy Cuban sandwiches
imho King Arthur has the best ap flour mix
@mkt if you ever need gf help just PM me

Off the top of my head, places that we love in Miami

Azucar on SW 8th Street for amazing ice cream, and Union Beer Store and Far Out Pizza, all within the same block on 8th street.

Blue Collar on Biscayne and NE 67th for elevated comfort food.

El Bagel on Biscayne and NE 69th (Nice! Yes, I have the mind of a 14 year old idiot) for delish bagels and bagel sammies for breakfast. Order early, they sell out fast.

Zak the Baker on NW 26th in Wynwood is a delicious jewish bakery and deli

Crust on NW 5th by the River for pizza

And as crazy as it sounds, the empanadas at Mendez Fuel (yes, a gas station) on Coral Way and SW 32nd
