Possible Frontierland expansion

Indeed. Even at DL where they are getting a whole new land up there, they are demoing half of RoA to do it, not looping around the existing RoA. Our expansion, if built, is one E-ticket.

The amount of land north of our ROA is extremely substantial. vs at Disneyland

Not so much.

Or whether there is a practical way to put it west of BTMRR.

@marni1971 has previously mentioned that there is an expansion pad west of BTMRR so there's space. There's actually room under the RR berm between Splash and BTMRR where a guest path could go. If they were really ambitious and needed a lot of space to build, they could even put a bridge over the canal and put a new ride further north -- there's tons of room outside the current RR berm north of the RoA.

Well, I think its clear that a big new attraction for Frontierland is being developed. The biggest question is whether funding for said project ever gets approved.
Exactly. Access to the area is not a problem. If Disneyland can build Star Wars Land where it's going, this would be a walk in the park.

It is widely known that the park needs more capacity as it is overrun. Physically expanding park acreage would be a good move.

I could imagine a rapids-based boat ride, especially considering that WDW doesn't have a major rapids ride like DL has, plus Disney might be developing transferable technology/design elements with the rapids ride at SHDL. I'd definitely be for a forward-facing style, though, like what was apparently originally considered for Kali, since that's more conducive to major show scenes.

Boy, would it be awesome if they named it Western River Expedition... :)

If this indeed ANOTHER water ride, Western River Expedition would be pretty awesome. And an awesome homage to the resorts history.

If the Frontierland expansion happens, it would likely end up being completed around the 50th anniversary in 2021. Wouldn't a version of the Western River Expansion be such an appropriate centerpiece for that celebration?

If the expansion were WRE, would the amount of land needed mean going outside the berm? Without the full Thunder Mesa, how big would WRE be? (I assume they would not try building the Thunder Mesa complex because of Splash and BTMRR.)

Wasn't WRE or some variation of it already ruled out with newer rumors of the Frontierland expansion?

The only info I can go on regarding WRE is what has been circulated online from models and descriptions. If this info is accurate, WRE would have likely called for a show building more or less the same size as Pirates. I'm not sure how accurate this placement or scale is, but here's a picture I found claiming where WRE's show building would have gone.

According to this site, it's actually an official Disney document, so it may be fairly accurate to the size and placement of WRE. The pink is apparently just the WRE part of the complex (not including the rest of Thunder Mesa). The land WRE would have occupied is currently mostly occupied by Big Thunder Mountain, WRE and BTM seem somewhat similar in size more or less.

The piece of land this expansion is currently rumored to be using is behind BTM, and above Splash Mountain. This land I suppose COULD be used for a decent sized show building, but there are several current obstacles in the area. There are several buildings back there, one of the smaller ones is the garage for the Big Thunder trains and you can't remove it (likely they won't move it either). I assume the body of water can be filled in. There's a service road back there, but it seems far enough off to the side and not a problem. I don't know what the other larger buildings in the area are used for. There's a particularly large one behind Splash Mountain that isn't connected to the ride itself.

EDIT- I did a little bit of image editing using a current overhead of Magic Kingdom and the old Thunder Mesa area plan above. I scaled and fitted the images together as accurately as I could manage and think I got a decent idea of the size of WRE's proposed show building. I took the WRE building and moved it over where the supposed Frontierland expansion is going, so you can get an idea how much land it would need and what obstructions need to be removed or circumvented.

Anothervoicedis / repetitantorc tweeted to say goodbye to the river. Since DL is safe, though truncated, I can only imagine they mean Wdw
