Planet Hollywood unveils redesign for Disney Springs

I didn't realize this would result in hundreds of layoffs. I guess it makes sense but kinda thought they would temporarily place them throughout the resort. Major bummer...

They aren't Disney employees, so there's really no way to place them elsewhere. i also don't think there will be many more resturant jobs opening up is Disney Springs in the time frame that would help these people. The one exception would be STK which should open early next year.

Quoted from the O Sentinel:
"The Planet Hollywood renovations are led by design firm Elkus Manfredi Architects. The Observatory's exterior will share the Disney Springs turn-of-the-century theme."

So does this mean a Disney Imagineering team hasn't/won't be doing this? I kinda was under the impression that Imagineer Teams designed stuff for Disney, then outside firms are hired and contribute to the building of the structure. Any insiders have information on this to help clear up my confusion?

A lot of the third party operated locations use their own designers on both the exterior and interior, but with oversight from WDI on the overall look and how it fits in with Disney Springs.

Disney also partners with outside designers for some projects. For example the recent permits for the changes to Wilderness Lodge list an outside Architect, Interior Design Partner and Landscape Design Partner.

Indeed they do. The California Grill refurbishment was outsourced to a non-Disney design firm. However, I would say it is more likely with the third party locations typically.

Love a little Disney every day!! ;)
It is closing for them to refurbish it to The Observatory still owned by PH. It is going to take at least 6 months so they are letting go all workers who can re apply and have priority if re applying when they open again. :)

Many projects have an outside architect involved. Elkus Manfredi (who also did The Grove and Americana) even did concept work for all of Disney Springs.

That's a really poorly written article (or was intentional). It makes it sound like PH is a Disney restaurant and that Disney is laying off all the employees when neither are true. Oh yeah, and their image is from Disneyland Paris. Awesome.

I agree. Either way I think it's unlikely this would be designed with no input from Imagineering.
Many projects have an outside architect involved. Elkus Manfredi (who also did The Grove and Americana) even did concept work for all of Disney Springs.
Nearly everything Disney involves the work of outside firms and vendors, including architecture and design. It just isn't publicized. Anything on the Disney property is going to have oversight from WDI and/or RCID, though. EMA has been involved with much of Springs, for Disney and the partners. A partner is going to be more likely to publicize the external Architect, whereas Disney is generally not. For a project like a restaurant, most of the time it's going to be bid out, whether or not the public knows. Theron Skees' team oversees the creative for everything in Springs, but they'd need huge amounts of people if they were to design everything internally. With today's Disney structure, it's more cost effective to send that work to dedicated vendors. It's not a large industry, and when Elkus was working on The Grove and Americana, they hired people who had worked for Imagineering. They also did the redesign of Downtown Disney Anaheim. WDI generally acts as management these days, with vendors doing the work, with WDI project management oversight which makes sure the design and build is in line with what is wanted for the entire district. The actual design work is in good hands with Elkus or a number of other firms working on Disney Springs, all of whom have done many other themed design and/or high end retail or restaurant projects around the world.
