Rumor Pixar's Coco coming to the Mexico Pavilion

Years ago they used to have a cultural exhibit in the pavilion where you could send email postcards with your picture on them...it was very cute, but it went away to be replaced by nothing... Such a shame... Maybe they could bring something similar back with a Coco inspired Day Of The Dead photo postcard...that would be very cute.

The extent of my knowledge of the holiday was what El Rio taught me...and now having seen Coco, I feel much more educated in it and now see how beautiful of a tradition/holiday it truly is. If Gran Fiesta changes to Coco (a full overlay like FEA got), and it teaches people about this one aspect of Mexican culture, isn’t it a “win?”

My family and I have seen Coco twice in the past week, and we all love it. The story, the animation, the music - it's a beautiful film, and one of my absolute favorites from Pixar. Although we like Gran Fiesta a lot, and ride it multiple times every trip, I would be thrilled for it to change to Coco, and for the movie to have a permanent presence in the pavilion, as it deserves.

As far as the scary aspect of the film/characters, I have to disagree. My son is 10, and is extremely sensitive to anything remotely frightening - every time we watch Toy Story 2, we have to fast forward or mute Woody's dream in the trash can. He enjoyed Coco the first time, was excited to see it again, and didn't hide his eyes once. I realize all children are different, but in my experience, the theme and skeletons were no deterrent.

I saw Coco last night and I thought it was outstanding - definitely ranks amongst Pixar’s best for me (for what it’s worth, I have no Mexican ancestry).

My brother and I were literally the only people in the theater, though, which can’t be the best sign for the movie’s U.S. box office prospects. Or maybe we just got lucky?

Its going to be the second highest domestic gross ever for the Thanksgiving weekend (only behind Moana), so signs are definitely good.

Its catching fire in China too!
There was some (admittedly mild) controversy about how much the government culture ministry in Mexico was supporting the release of the film there. Overall, though, I think this is great cultural diplomacy for Mexico right around the world as the success in China is proving.

Remezcla, a kind of 'alternative' Latino culture website also set out to get Latino critics to review the film and you can see the results here: http://remezcla.com/lists/film/latino-film-critics-review-pixar-coco/

The creative process of Coco is not that different to El Rio del Tiempo, except that Coco had more Mexican as well as Mexican American input in crafting a tribute to Mexican culture. Considering how Mexicans have embraced the film, surely there is little reason to resist Coco replacing The Three Caballeros? I just hope they do a decent job!

Not a great opening weekend domestically. Box Office Mojo has a $49 million estimate which is 3rd worst all time for PIxar (ahead of Toy Story and Good Dinosaur. Having said that, l can still see this getting to $200 mil and fall in the Ratatouille/Wall-E range.

That doesn't seem to be the way the opening weekend is generally being read

"With a strong, five-day debut Disney and Pixar's Coco joined the ranks of the many successful films Disney has launched over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Receiving high marks from critics and audiences alike, the film finished atop the weekend box office and is looking at solid returns throughout the holiday season...

With an estimated $49 million for the three-day weekend and $71.2 million for the five-day, Disney and Pixar's Coco delivered the fourth largest Thanksgiving weekend three- and five-day openings. As a result, Disney continues to own nine of the ten largest three and five-day openings over the Thanksgiving holiday with New Line's Four Christmases the only non Mouse House title remaining among the ranks...

Internationally, Coco was already off to a great start before this weekend even began after becoming the highest grossing release ever in Mexico where it opened at the end of October. This weekend it added several other markets including China and Russia. Its China debut came in at an estimated $18.2 million over the three-day weekend making it the 2nd highest opening ever for a Pixar/Disney animated release, behind only Zootopia. For now the film's international cume stands at $82.2 million for a global tally topping $153 million."

You're making a mistake somewhere in reading the charts, probably by only looking at the 3 day weekend total and not the 5 day weekend total ($71 million). From BOM, this is comparing Coco to all movies of all time...

Compared to just other Pixar films? Probably in the bottom half. Compared to all films of all time... very very good.

Which is just like it's critics' rating at about 81 out of 100. That's super fantastic for all films. That's only in the middle of Pixar films.

I really think you're both underselling this film. For most people, this will be a top tier pixar film.

I'm using data of box office receipts and critical ratings and comparing those figures to other movies. The comparison is what it is. It is not, box-office-wise, a domestic record-breaker (though it is a record-breaker in Mexico). It is not, critically, a top tier Pixar film. Those are facts stated as facts. There is no attempt to undersell. It is what it is.

But no doubt, it is doing well enough (compared to all other movies) for Disney to capitalize on its success in merchandise and park attractions. Especially for the ever-grown Latino market in the US and worldwide. Like Mulan in the China pavilion, Coco will be linked to the Mexico pavilion for decades to come.

Chili's
Coco currently has a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, 80/100 on Metacritic, and an A+ audience Cinema Score. This is tracking similar in terms of reviews to another Pixar film...

Monsters, Inc
also has a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, 78/100 on Metacritic, and an A+ audience Cinema Score.

Coco is the first film since Up for Pixar to earn an A+ audience Cinema Score, 6th overall, surpassed The Avengers for highest grossing film of all time in Mexico, 2nd highest opening for a Disney/Pixar animated film in China behind Zootopia, and surpassed opening weekend box office expectations in the US.

Plus, with good word of mouth and no new major films opening until Star Wars: The Last Jedi in a few weeks, I'd say it could make $600-700 Million worldwide by the end of its run, which would place it in the top tier of Pixar box office as well.

I'm excited everyone seems to like it but sad that I still have so long to wait since it doesn't release in the UK until January 19th. I haven't seen any adverts for it in the UK yet but its very late release date probably explains that. It will be interesting to see how they promote it here considering the success it has already experienced elsewhere.
