While looking up the critic reception on the movie on Wikipedia, I came across the following:

Hacking incident[edit]
In May 2017, the film was allegedly stolen by a group of piracy hackers, who demanded a large sum of money from Disney in order for them not to distribute the unreleased film. The company refused to do so and worked with the FBI in order to get the identity of the group.[141]

Pirates have gone after pirates!!
Ahh, I think I remember hearing about that. Continuing with that article, it's made 166 million in NA with a budget of 230 mil. While they'll make it up with International sales, they really need to give the movies a rest.

Did anyone even see the newest PotC movie? What was the overall perception of it's success? It seemed to come and go quietly. I don't think I've seen any since the second movie.
I was planning to see it, but then a close friend warned me to not spend my money in the theater because she thought it was awful. I'll probably check it out on DVD or Netflix though. The dedicated thread in the movie forum seems to be mixed. There are those who have seen it 3 or 4 times, and then there are those who are calling it the worst of the bunch.

Domestically, it's not doing too hot (it's only made half of what Black Pearl made in North America), but overseas it's doing okay.

I think Disney was pretty strategic about its release date. 3 weeks after Guardians but 3 weeks before Cars 3. Idk if they were counting on Wonder Woman being a massive success and taking away their box office though. Box Office Mojo has Pirates 5 as the 10th highest ranking film domestically, and while 8 of the movies came out before it and have had time to make money, Wonder Woman came out a week after and has doubled Pirates domestically.

@disneygeek90 Critics panned this one, but audiences seemed to like it more than the fourth.

Honestly, I think that some of the grading processes should happen a month or two after the movie is released. I remember Thor 2 being hailed as a much better film than the first, and while I really liked it initially, it's now fallen to "Okay" in my book. Now it's almost constantly ranked at the bottom of MCU lists.

I'm a little embarrassed to say that I didn't realize there had been so many sequels. I lost interest after the second one was just so-so, IMO.

Give it 40 years, and most people will only remember the first (as they should). Until last year, I hadn't realized that the original Planet of the Apes had 4 sequels , and I have a suspicion that the Pirates franchise has the same fate awaiting it.

Kind of like the Pirates ride, actually. It may have great monetary success right now, but it'll be dead and forgotten as time goes by.

The ride will not be forgotten, The movies likely will.

I read an article the other day about Depp's financial issues, and they claimed that Pirates 5 would eventually clear $1 billion worldwide. Not sure if that's even close to correct, but these things seem to be successful even when bad. I'm holding off until DVD on this one.

Around $700 million right now, but other than Japan, where it just opened, it's more or less done with its major releases. The last one made like $100 million in Japan, but that was a couple years ago.

The lack of popular characters that appeal to boys is a big part of the reason Disney bought Marvel and Star Wars, too.

Other than Stitch and Jack Sparrow, Disney hadn't had much luck getting things to work.
They tried pushing Tarzan for the male demograhic for a short period in the early 2000's If I remember correctly. Does anyone remember the short-lived "Disney Heroes" whose lineup consisted of Aladdin, King Arthur, Hercules, Peter Pan and Robin Hood and was meant to be the boy-centric equivalent of the Princess franchise? It was discontinued quickly after very poor sales.

In the old days Disney used to market their films to the whole family. Then the "Princess" brand and it's inevitable aftermath happened.
Thanks to the Disney Princess franchise, now I'm having a hard time admitting that a liked Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs and Cinderella because of this.

Even at $800 million it's a nice profit for Disney. Hopefully they don't make another unless it's truly a great story though.

It was like an odd-numbered Star Trek flik. In other words, if you're a fan, you'll like it. If not, it's "meh."

I think PotC5 tied up the orig. trilogy nicely. It seemed a big overwraught and didn't really tackle any new ground, but it made up for the 4th film well enough, imo
