Well, they definitely made an effort to make the auction scene look very much the same, in terms of figures, positioning and lighting at least. I was expecting it to seem noticeably different looking for some reason.

Of course the primary concern is losing the original dialogue. Someone on YouTube commented (I know that's not a good source) that the dialogue was entirely re-recorded. The "We wants the redhead" was kind of kept in that the crowd on the right side of the river is now supposedly saying "We want weapons. Like the redhead! Yeah like the redhead!" Hopefully that isn't the case for the U.S. parks and at least some effort is made to preserve some of the original audio.

Also god help me if they ever put movie characters into the caverns in America. I really, really hope that Barbossa AA never makes it over here.

If they put Barbossa in Florida version. it would be fine.(Maybe they can take him out of the Paris version to put him in WDW) DL is the sacred one. I hope the original Captain returns on both coasts.

Well they've done it; imagineering succeeded. They scrubbed the scene clean and the result is... meh. Now nothing more than another vignette designed to be glazed over and forgot seconds later. The Auction scene is a footnote. Was that the goal? if so; it's a success.

I will say however that the scene with the sword-fighting lady pirate is a smart* addition. It's depiction is designed to appear commonplace; it's a subtle change that works. Barbossa does too! The AA is richly detailed and the transition to ghost Barbossa through changes in lighting was well done.

As with all re-imagining though the Imagineers did a bit of good with a bit of bad. It's always bittersweet. The ride lost an iconic scene and the storyline was tossed. The vignettes have been reduced to simply showing piratey things without context. I hope for WDW's Pirates; the imagineers can strike a good balance and still give the Auction Scene and Redhead purpose. I guess we'll see soon enough.

The redhead is the muscle now is the point. I love it. It's hilarious. Of course the dialogue isn't going to translate well because French has different speech patterns from English and the audio isn't 100% audible and moves too fast for a non-native or fluent speaker to fully comprehend. My big issue isn't Barbosa. There's still a tenuous grasp on the theme that crime doesn't pay because he's cursed now. My biggest issue is Jack in the treasure room. It's the worst change and all it does is make the story fall to pieces because SYNERGY!

I will admit that the Barbossa animatronic is pretty impressive, as is the projection mapping effect they used. I'm glad they found a way to show that he was cursed. Although, he feels a bit crowded where they put him.

Jack at the end of the caverns is the worst, though. Totally tears the story apart. They should have put a projection mapping effect on him as well to show that evil men pay in the end, as the ride was intended to originally show.

Does anybody know if the other animatronics received upgrades? They're all moving very smoothly and are very animated, so that's really good to see.

I think the Barbossa AA is just paint and fabric that glows under UV lights, although I could be wrong. Same results as projection mapping but done on the cheap. A theatre trick of old, a practical effect vs a digital one. Pretty impressive.
