News Paradise Pier Becoming Pixar Pier

I think part of the disappointment with Toy Story Land and every other Toy Story ride is that they don’t really explore the danger of being a toy. Being lost, seperated, abandoned, tortured by next door neighbors, etc. Those elements were a huge part of the series but Disney is trying to convince us that being a toy is all fun and games. Did they watch their own movies?

it's more than just the danger of being a toy that fails to communicate, imo...
which is why i cringe thinking of the global invasion - it was the cheap, lazy, shortcut way to rapid insertion and subsequent propagation, which is the biggest six flags thing about it

i remain puzzled how these rather placating pixar installations fail to find it worthwhile to even pay proper respect

i'm also reminded of the gross under-utilization of the renaissance period in it's aftermath

Locations featured in the films correlate with this as well. There's plenty of memorable settings, particularly in the first film. Andy's room, Pizza Planet and Sid's room. Settings with a great deal of potential but they never really commit to any of that - nobody ever thinks of "Andy's Yard" when they think of going to an engulfing Toy Story based environment.

This is where I believe it's rational why many come to compare Toy Story Land to Pixar Pier. Successful themed areas integrate theme, location and meaning into a place beyond places. That's why the newly opened land in Hollywood Studios is considered by some to be thoughtless, slapdashed and disappointing as with the likes of Pixar Pier.

Wait, this whole time I was picturing SID'S backyard as the location for Toy Story land, which was bad enough since it was just a crappy back yard, but it's ANDY'S backyard!? Did they ever even show that?

Ummm... if you took a shot for every time "Andy" was mentioned in the promotional material, you'd be dead of alcohol poisoning.

Which is strange to, since in this generation of Toy Story, Andy doesn't even own the toys. He gave them to that random kid at the end of 3.

If Disney can base TSL on the first 3 Toy Story films, why couldn't they base Star Wars Land on the first 3? Yeesh.

Yup. Seems like they re doing this with all of the IP now. Nothing can be scary/ weird anymore. Look at Mermaid aside from Ursula’s lair. None of the adventure is there. Look at Frozen Ever After where they didn’t even include the wolves. They turned TOT into one big joke. Everything has to be cute or funny now and or ultra/PC. See POTC.

One of the things that appealed most to me about Disneyland as a kid was that it sort of terrified me. Pirates burning down villages, Yetis taking a swipe at you, leisurely car rides to Hell. I refused to look into Mara's eyes when I was finally tall enough to ride Indy. Disneyland was an enigma, it drummed up excitement and fear and relief and utter joy all in one go.

Not the same "everything is great and happy" attitude that they've adopted today, but it sells the most stuffed animals you know.

So many of the deceased villains are visible in parades and some M&Gs. The parks' time setting is mostly time-less.

I'm reminded to share this again. They don't know what made them so great in the first place (I mean, they do, and we'll get it with star wars, but they ignore it the other 19/20 years). https://www.scribd.com/document/17664805/Disneyland-Is-Good-For-You

They should have made it a huge air conditioned indoor recreation of Andy's room. Instead, it's just a less charming Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground with tarmac and an ugly roller coaster.

If you need a reminder of how big of a flop Pixar Fest and Pixar Pier is, they're giving away tickets just to fill the parks

Wow that's a great deal. If only I lived a few miles closer lol. But honestly I don't know how Pixar Pier and Fest are 'flops'? At least according to the wait times. Incrdicoaster and TSM are 60-120 min waits all day since it opened last week. I looked at the wait times yesterday, both parks were slammed. DCA in particular, all the stuff people hate here: Soarin, GOTG and now Incredicoaster all easily gets above 60 mins. GOTG seems to get 80 mins average most of the day and that opened over a year ago. TOT rarely got above 60 mins even in the summer.

But again, this proves EXACTLY why APs will never go away. Even when the parks are still pretty busy they are offering free tickets and discounts to the locals. Its really strange to me that if attendance drops nominally they pull out all the stops.

I suspect that this move also has a lot to do with gaining favor from those who live close to the park. This CM wage debate seems to be continuing to gain traction in the news, and I bet Disney's doing everything they can to get Anaheim on their side.

But dang, free park hoppers? I bet most who go don't go anywhere near Pixar Pier.

Yes, the parks are mostly timeless, but in order to be convincing, these one IP themed lands have to work within the context of the universe of that IP. In this case, if the setting is Andy's yard, then it's assumed that the characters seen are depictions of the characters as they were when Andy owned them. This limits Disney from adding any new toys seen in future films that Andy had nothing to do with.

Do you think that will stop them?

Wish there was a Disney Supreme Court to uphold the Disney Constitution and keep the Disney Federal Government accountable.

Of course it won't stop them. But it strengthens my belief that these 1 IP lands that are set in an environment that puts the land in direct context of the films is an incredibly weak long term strategy.

LOL. Do you realize how insanely tiny the boundaries for these freebie tickets are? This is literally the adjacent neighborhood next to where all the construction is happening for the new parking garage and now the new hotel. I'd imagine it's going to be pretty disruptive there for the next year, so it sounds like Disney is just trying to get in their good graces in order to keep complaints to a minimum (and other city politics reasons that DarkBeer can probably explain better than I) while they start to get a lot more aggressive with construction. See below.... Hilarious you think this is about Pixar Fest.
