Agreed, but uber-pessimistic and violent is the opposite end of the scale. Sci-fi doesn't have to always be one extreme or the other. I love the first two alien movies for what they are: an outer space haunted house film and a terrific action movie. E.T. is the extreme version of family Sci fi. What I'm looking for is the seldom-seen middle ground, which I'm sure will turn up more often as more and more Sci fi is produced and the themes are applied to different genres. I want "My Dinner with Andre"... set in Dex's Diner.
The Orville comes pretty close to what I want... when it isn't being preachy or overly crude.
