News Pacific Wharf to be Reimagined into San Fransokyo

I'll offer this project a backhanded compliment:

I appreciate that San Fransokyo Square maintains the mediocrity of Pacific Wharf, because it preserves the very best component of that land -- the unassuming back entrance to Cars Land, where guests step out of a mundane food court and find themselves walking toward a gigantic, jaw-dropping mountain range. Impresses me every time.

Hey, more power to ya. I'm puzzled by WDI's choices for Avengers Campus, but given the level of excitement I can sense from other guests whenever I walk through the land, it's quite possible I'm in the minority. I'm okay with toning down my cynicism when it comes to attractions/lands I don't necessarily love but other fans clearly adore (Haunted Mansion Holiday, to name another).

Of course, I'm a huge fan of Marvel Super Hero Island at Islands of Adventure, so who knows what that says about my judgment.
:) I've got no issue with someone not liking it. Not everyone has to like everything. (I'd tear down Galaxy's Edge in a heartbeat to get back Big Thunder Ranch BBQ. lol) I take issue with people who think there's no value or even negative value at Avengers Campus when there are clearly plenty of people who find the place super fun. :) So I appreciate your fair acknowledgement that it doesn't work for you and you'd prefer something different, but you see how much others enjoy it, without needing to disparage it.

I would enjoy seeing the comic book characters at SHI/Islands of Adventure, and I like the comic book theming style of it. But since I couldn't ride the Spider-Man attraction there (due to motion sickness), it's far less appealing than Avengers Campus which has tons of characters & entertainment and an attraction I enjoy going on (WEB SLINGERS) in a park where there are only a handful of attractions I can do. (I rope dropped the other day for Rogers the Musical and to pass the extra morning time, I went on WEB SLINGERS, Monsters Inc., Little Mermaid, and Soarin' and then I just circled back to Avengers Campus for more characters and shows because there's nothing else in DCA I can ride other than the trolley!)

From MiceChat:

“The San Fransokyo Bridge looks pretty from afar, but up close you can see that it’s a mess. It was very poorly constructed and all the pieces don’t come together completely. We’re not sure if it’s the fault of the designers or contractor, but the pieces just don’t come together right.

Take a look up and you’ll see lots of little pieces that just don’t come together right: missing bolts and screws, huge gaps, and warping in some of the pieces. I’m sure there have been some heated conversations over this one at Team Disney Anaheim. But eventually, all of this needs to be reinstalled.

Remember when you were a kid and the puzzle pieces didn’t seem to fit, so you forced them? That’s what this bridge feels like up close.

Really disgraceful. They need to redo this without further delay.

I'm looking forward to trying the new menus.

As for the rest of it: if only someone could have told WDI that they could have just changed the menus without also spending a fortune to redo an area for negligible benefit...and now also having to spend a fortune to redo the changes because they were done in the most haphazard, slapdash way possible.

The worst part is it’s a truss bridge pretending to be a suspension bridge, so they can’t get rid of the tall rounded metal bars on the sides. I think they should’ve built a new bridge but I guess that’s expensive.

It's a bridge on a bridge. It's the latest craze from WDI.

Next spring they'll be installing a swinging bridge on top, with a pontoon bridge below.

But what about all the cool pictures with the red Frankenstein bridge?

I have to say. I haven’t seen anything this shoddy from Disney that I can think of. Even if some things aren’t the greatest choices, the quality isn’t like this. I have to hope that Disney knows this is terrible, and will fix it.

Dusty’s overall opinion does match my own. The area is a net win, but the bridge is a disaster.

His words:

“The overlay of the land is effective. Yes, this is an incredibly cheap redo… but it mostly works. They took an area with no Disney theme, and they gave it one. There were three quick service restaurants here, a beer truck, and a margarita window. They’ve managed to add a shop, character meet and greets, and whimsical details to make this mini-land feel like a Disney place. That’s a net win. The real problem is lack of capacity for all the folks who want to try out all the new food.”

And this is the fundamental issue with Disney in 2023 - the assumption from the company and fans that every single inch of a Disney theme park must have a “Disney theme”.

Thank god these people weren’t around when New Orleans Square and World Showcase were built.

That’s the direction of the parks, has been for a long time. We either need to learn to or try to accept so we can enjoy it as much as possible (less disappointed), or really just move on in general. I don’t think this is going to change.

The consumer speaks, and taking these vague areas and giving them an IP seems to pay off.

The key for me, it still needs to be the Disney expected quality.

Well it’s definitely not a win for me. As I said before, instead of walking into Pacific Wharf and SUBCONSCIOUSLY feeling like I’m somewhere that feels like a wharf I’ll be CONSCIOUSLY thinking I’m in a space that Disney forced to look like San Fransokyo from Big Hero 6. With poor to mediocre results at that. Not to mention how it interferes with the view of Pixar Pier.

I could probably accept it if they weren’t simultaneously messing with perfect lands that Walt and WED had their hands in like NOS.
