News Pacific Wharf to be Reimagined into San Fransokyo

What am I missing here? This Tron ride looks stupid. And it's only 60 seconds long.

I mean, sixty seconds might be okay for some folks who are desperate, but I always strive for a bit more.

I've been on it a number of times.

The launch and outdoor portion are great. The big outdoor swoop in the cycle position is fun. Being in the front is is really great.

Then the ride's over.

I'm shocked they're taking this to WDW because:

1. The size of the guest is VERY different between the two countries, as is general mobility. This is gonna be a problem.
2. It's laughably short.
3. There wasn't anywhere good to put it. So they shoehorned it in sideways.

The average Knott's guest is not exactly a rail, and they've been running Pony Express successfully for years. More people fit on it than one might think.

The bigger issues are that it's a short ride and has low capacity. And as Buried said above, it's shoehorned in. Just an incredibly poor choice all around.

Tron is Shanghai's Space Mountain. In Florida it will sit next to a real Space Mountain. Why?

Maybe space mountain will get redone in the next 10 years like tokyo?
It should be, it's overdue. But they had an opportunity to do that in 2009 (for a ride that's older than DL's was when they did their complete rebuild) and chose not to.

And even if they do redo it, there's likely only so much they can do to smooth it out to modern coaster standards if they keep the same design.

I love Florida's Space Mountain, but I can easily imagine a number of people riding shiny, new Tron and then immediately realizing how old and busted Space seems by comparison.

In terms of Tron fitting people, as I said at some point in the last week or so, I fit in the normal seats easily and I'm almost 300 pounds. Granted, different body proportions will result in different experiences, but you need not be a complete stick figure to ride Tron, I assure you. I think part of it might just come from the confusion that results from the weird position you must ride in. Some people will have issues, but I think fewer than are imagined will have problems. What might be different (but isn't totally so now that 7DMT and presumably Guardians now exist) is that Disney is no longer designing coasters for almost every conceivable body type, which is difficult to maintain WHILE ALSO trying to build more thrilling rides.

Does Space Mountian really need a redesign? I can see maybe the structure need to be replaced. But I would like to see it updated to look like we are in interstellar space.

Why would they redo Disneyland's Space Mountain? It was built in 1977. They put in a new track in 2004. That's 27 years and they only did it because it was at the point of critical failure. In fact, I was the last to ride it before it shut down for a year. It felt like it was put together by drunk carnies that night.

All that considered above, I'm glad this Tron ride isn't coming to DCA. Especially in an "Asian Culture!" retheme of Pacific Wharf. That area of DCA needs a family dark ride, not another coaster.

To add a dark ride entered via the southern flanks of Pacific Wharf , couldn't they use the space where the "temporary" parade building they slapped together in early '02 to house the Electrical Parade? DCA already has another parade building south of Pixar Pier, that was built on purpose to house DCA's day parade. Then they added a second big parade warehouse when the Electrical Parade returned in a panic.

Fast forward twenty years, and... DCA has zero parades. It's last parade closed four years ago; Paint The Night ended in November, 2018. There was no replacement.

Deep Philosophical Question: How many parade warehouses does a theme park need if that theme park doesn't actually have a parade? 🤔

The only thing it says on Shanghai Disneyland's website about the weight or size requirements for Tron, er... TRON Lightcycle Power Run - Presented by Chevrolet is this:
  • The seating and restraints on this attraction may prohibit guests of certain body shapes or sizes from riding.

Still, after doing plenty of traveling in Japan and a few other Southeast Asian nations, I know for a fact that the difference in "body shapes and sizes" there compared to the USofA is staggering. Pardon the pun.

I do not envy the Tron CM's when they open that at Disney World. Heck, even a lot of the Lifestyle Bloggers from the Midwest and South aren't going to be able to fit on this thing. That should be fun to watch the YouTube coverage of that. 🤣
Well yeah, that's standard amusement/theme park industry boilerplate. Every park in the world has some version of that exact language in place. They can't specify exact height or weight requirements because every person's body shape is different. Two people with the same weight may not be able to go on the same ride because they carry the weight differently, for example.

For all of the concern about people fitting, this fat midwesterner fit easily!

The last part of this is a little crass. I've been denied riding coasters before because of my size, many times. It's not fun or funny, and I wouldn't wish the experience of not fitting on a ride on anyone. Sure, there are going to be people that aren't going to fit, but we don't need to point and laugh.

First time at DCA since they announced San Fransokyo. I really can’t understand what they re thinking. That forced Golden Gate Bridge is going to the ruin the vista of Pixar Pier from that section of DCA’s main artery. Which is the first glimpse of the pier most people get walking in from the parks entrance. But they need to get that IP into an IPless four court. Sight lines be damned. And for what? A Meet n Greet? Permanent “Chinese” New Year land? This is probably one of the biggest head scratchers and unnecessary additions/ changes in a while. Most people aren’t getting too worked up because it’s just a “foodcourt” at DCA but it’s a pretty terrible and unnecessary move with literally no upside.

EDIT: or at least do it without altering the bridge.

It is actually a perfect example of their new parks strategy.

They see the parks now simply as a place for children and will just slap IP on every inch of every park and attraction.

Sight lines, theming, architectural integration, and placemaking are now not only low priorities, they are fundamentally rejected.

It's like Six Flags - it's not a Tilt-A-Whirl, it's Wonder Woman's Golden Lasso Spinners!

So there will be no more Pirates, Mansion, Big Thunder, America Sings, Adventure Through Inner Space, Tiki Room, Jungle Cruise, etc, etc.

It's only lazy, awkward, childish IP slapped on everything going forward.

It's more marketable and so much more Disney!!!

It reeks of late 90s/ early 2000s Eisner. RIP The Living Seas, El Rio De Tempe,
and Country Bears. Anyone ever hear about Tiki Room Under New Management? History repeats itself.

Even the rock was working on a Jungle Cruise overlay which was thankfully canned. We can expect "synergy" if their 2nd haunted mansion movie attempt actually works.
