Our salute to all things Disney – but mostly Wilderness Lodge!

Who:
Us! Same Disney lovin’ crew from so many trip reports. Myself, Dh, Ds16 and Dd13. At the time of this picture we had been outside for about 4 minutes. And already I have humidity hair. There is a reason I don't live in Florida.

DisneyWildernessLodge163.jpg

My parents – You’ve seen them on almost all of my trip reports. They love Disney but they love being with their grandkids even more.

DisneyWildernessLodge164.jpg

My sister and her family – My sister was on my girl’s cruise on the Dream last January. Other than that, her family has been MIA for a lot of recent Disney trips. Something about the cost of airfare for 5 people, the cost of cruising for 5 people, wah wah wah wah wah. :lookaroun:lol: We do love spending time with them though, and I was very glad they could come on this trip! I love you Bonnie!

DisneyWildernessLodge158.jpg

Friends – These friends haven’t been with us for 5 years! They’re great fun though and we’re really glad they could come too! The Dad’s a doctor – bonus!! You never know when having a doctor with you will come in handy. Thankfully, his medical skills were not needed on this trip!

When: August 28-September 3rd

Yes, the crazy hot time of year. We were trying to work out a time when everyone could make it. Ds is a junior in high school and it’s getting harder and harder to pull him out. My dad is a principal so it’s hard for him to get out sometimes too without causing bitterness around the teachers! :D

At first we thought we’d go in October which is one of our usual times. Then we found out we were moving (again!) to Washington DC. We checked the school calendars hoping for a fall break! No such luck. But the schools here start crazy late!! We weren’t starting school until September 6th!! Score!!

Since everyone else had to take their kids out either way, we decided it may be the perfect time! Other than the heat of course.

Once we got to DC we found out that no time is perfect of course. Both kids were missing open house at school where they would get the lay of the land, their schedules and their lockers. Oops. They were also missing soccer and volleyball tryouts. Double oops. Not too big of a deal for a 16 year old boy, but for a middle school girl? Her world was coming to an end. If it was possible for her to stay here, she very well might have.

Well, not much could be done. We were committed and excited at that point, so we decided just to make it work! The coaches agreed to let them come to the first few days of practice to try out, and the school let us come in before we left to get our lockers. Crisis – kind of – averted.

Where: Wilderness Lodge Villas!

Okay, I have a deep dark confession. I had some trepidation about staying there. I’ve been to Wilderness Lodge many times and I’ve toured both the lodge and the villas. Dh has wanted to stay here for years. When I toured the rooms, however, I just wasn’t that excited.

I know! It’s a beloved property by many and that’s horrible of me. I know how much people love it and I recommend it to people all the time. It is the least expensive deluxe on property after all. It is also beautiful! Just beautiful!

The thing is, I am all about luxury on vacation. I want to be impressed by my room and view. I want to feel like I left my pottery barn style furniture at home and am headed for something totally different. My tours of the rooms didn’t feel like that! We were from Colorado for goodness sake! I didn’t want to go camping or stay in a cabin no matter how beautiful! I want to relax and get away from normal life.

But for good or bad – that’s what was available when we called DVC member services. So I didn’t confess my misgivings to anyone but Dh and put on a happy face.

We were staying in 2 two bedroom villas. How bad can that be? :D

What: Military tickets and DVC!

The military tickets were definitely in our favor this trip! Last year our big family October trip somehow fell in the 2 ½ week period where there was no military salute going on. I mean the only 2 ½ week period in two years!! Not this time! We weren’t going to miss it again!

Unfortunately they are only 4 day tickets, but we decided we could make that work too. We had toyed with the idea of going to Universal to see Harry again on the 5th day, but our new Washington DC budget axed that idea. My sister also (5 people) decided they didn’t want to spend that much, and of course my parents were doing whatever their grandkids were doing. Friends still decided to go because they were meeting some other friends there for the day. The rest of us decided a water park would suit us fine that 5th day.

Free (kind of) place to stay and cheap tickets! Count me in!

Sunday, August 28 – Travel Day – OR NOT!!

Well after a crazy week that included our first earthquake (!!) we suddenly had a hurricane problem! Mercy! In fact, as I’m writing this a week after our trip, my children’s school has been cancelled because of flooding!! I think our new state may be trying to tell us we are not welcome.

We were supposed to fly out of DC at noon on Sunday. Exactly the time a category 2 hurricane was supposed to be right on top of us.

I started stalking United’s website on Wednesday, hoping for a travel waiver so I could change our flights to Saturday. Finally, Thursday afternoon, it came!! I had to get a hold of Dh before I could do it so I paced the house waiting for him to get out of a meeting. When he finally called me back, he said he couldn’t leave on Saturday. If the hurricane got ugly they would need him at work.

Alrighty! We were going without him! Hopefully he would be joining us on Sunday.

Earlier in the week when I told dh I was waiting for a travel waiver so we could go on Saturday, he said, “We don’t have reservations, where would we stay?”

I said, “Dude!! I’m a travel agent!!” :ROFLOL:

I found a room at Saratoga Springs for the night. Works for me!

Saturday, August 27th – Travel Day!

Yay! I was nervousing a little more the night before we left when they started shutting down airports. But finally! It was time!! Our flights from Dulles were only $157 a person! Awesome! I love flying from the East coast again! We lost our direct flight but that was okay.

We also had to get up crazy early for the new flight. We left the house at 6 am.

Everything went smoothly on our first flight. Our second flight was incredibly loud. There were some very sad babies! That’s perfectly understandable, but there was another new issue for me. We had two families right next to us who had DVD players for each of their kids. That’s not a problem of course, but the fact that they didn’t use headphones was! When their movies started I thought, “Oops, they forgot to plug in the headphones!” And then they didn’t. Ever.

I literally listened to Elmo from one side and Beauty and the Beast from another for about an hour.

Really? Is that okay now? Is it just me? :lookaroun

Both families had problems with terrible two tantrums. It's a long time to sit still. No judging there.

One of the dads was at the end of his wits when we got off. In his defense, we did sit on the tarmac about 50 yards from our gate for 45 minutes after we landed. Everyone was frustrated.

We ended up behind them as we were walking up the ramp. Their two year old, from the aforementioned temper tantrums, was in front of the Dad rolling her little tiny princess suitcase.

She stopped at one point and he kind of yelled, “Keep walking!!!!!! You can not stop!!!!”

She got going but stopped again a few feet later. He yelled this time, “You can not stop walking!!! Keep moving!!!”

Well, when she stopped again, he kind of lost it. He was carrying a large car seat so he didn’t have any free hands. He took his foot, kicked/pushed it into her suitcase which ran into her, which knocked her and her suitcase both over, leaving the little girl sobbing on the ground.

We were all trapped behind them for this entire episode.

So. Incredibly. Awkward.

And horrifying.

I’m really hoping they were doused with some serious pixie dust for the rest of their vacation.

We were actually in no hurry for once! Usually when we get to MCO I want to sprint to DME. Literally, sprint.

Today was like a bonus day for us. I just wanted to relax and take it all in. We didn’t have park tickets for the day, and no one was waiting for us at WDW. We decided to eat in the food court before we caught our bus.

Chick Fil A and Sbarro. Yummy.

We walked over to the Universal Store next to check out their Harry merchandise. They have a surprisingly good selection for a small store.

Finally, we could take it no longer and left for DME. I had to check in since we didn’t have vouchers. They gave us vouchers and directed us through the line. I unpacked my camera while she was printing the voucher but after that everything else happened so fast I didn’t have time for a single picture!! We literally did not stop walking after we left the desk. We got right on the bus!

We waited on the mostly empty bus for a few minutes and then left for the World!! Our bus driver was quite the comedian.

Ds loves getting his picture made:

He took us to Saratoga Springs. Another resort I had toured but not stayed in. Saratoga is very pretty and absolutely ginormous!

We took our bags to our room and got ready to go out. Our room was nice. Not crazy about the mauve paint, but it was in a great location. I definitely liked Saratoga overall.

At some point dd decided that she didn’t want to carry around the camera she brought. Ds said, “I’ll take you back. Come on!” I was like, What? Wow! There is some serious pixie dust sprinkling going on here. I’m loving the niceness!!

We had planned to walk to Downtown Disney, but then I realized we had gone the complete opposite direction. We passed a bus stop near the pool and decided to wait.

DisneyWorld2011194.jpg

DisneyWorld2011195.jpg

We were sitting near an older couple and their grandson who looked to be in his mid twenties. At one point a lifeguard walked near us and the grandmom stopped him. She asked him if all of the busses stopped here.

The lifeguard smiled and told her they all do.

She wanted further clarification, so she had another question.

“Even the ones that go to Disney World?”

:lookaroun:lol:

Her grandson was horrified. He said, “Grandma!!” then started whispering furiously. It was quite funny.

I was almost embarrassed by how short the bus ride was. We could have walked there a few times in the amount of time it took to wait for the bus and ride there.

We walked all the way through to the West Side, going in a few shops along the way.

The new legos were so awesome:

DisneyWorld2011202.jpg

At this point I was starting to love this weather. What? Love this weather?

I can’t even tell you how nice it was. Maybe it’s because on our last trip in August the heat and humidity were oppressive. Every time we stepped outside the air conditioning we were instantly covered in sweat. I mean instantly. I fully expected that this time around too.

Well, we lucked out all week. The weather was incredible!! It was warm to be sure, but incredibly comfortable. The entire week was like this. I can count on one hand the number of times I was sweating. All of those happened when we were stuck in a line with no covering and no breeze. Really! And there was very little rain. The one night it rained for a few hours we were already back in the room resting. I can’t tell you how many times we talked about how lucky we were with the weather.

Dd claimed she was starving and about to pass out at this point. We always have a hard time with quick service in Downtown Disney. I love Earl of Sandwich, but Ds doesn’t eat much there and I knew we would be eating there the next night. Our go to restaurant used to be, sadly, McDonalds! It’s pitiful I know.

We just decided to go eat back at Saratoga. We took the boat back and ate in the food court.

See how starving she is while waiting for the boat:

The kids entertained themselves with the easels while we waited for our food.

I was better about taking food pictures this trip! Not perfect, but better! I actually remembered at times!!

DisneyWorld2011219.jpg

Okay, I was a little late remembering this time.

Dd kept bombing my photos:

DisneyWorld2011224.jpg

Then we decided to end the night with a swim. I was excited to see the campfire and marshmallow roasting, but the kids were actually full.

We went to bed around 10:00, ready for a fun day tomorrow!

I thought of you a couple of times, Louella. I could not believe the weather. We kept saying over and over again how nice it felt. I was fully prepared for the oppressive heat and it just didn't come!

It was rough going a day early.:lookaroun

Blech! My hair looks crazy!! It is not supposed to look like that!

Yay for good weather!! The one time I went in august (which was back in 1997) it was soooo hot and humid! Ugh!!!

Can't wait to see what you think about the WL. We've eaten there before at whispering canyon cafe but we will be staying there forthe first time in November. My mom loves camping so it's right up her alley! :)

Can't wait to read more!!

It was that way two years ago when we went in August! We lucked out, I know.

We did like it! It's not my favorite deluxe, but it was still very nice. :)

Yay! I'm glad you liked Saratoga. I think it's a beautiful resort that really gets a bad rap.

Can't wait for more! :sohappy:

It is very pretty! The grounds are so nice!

agreed! ssr is a nice resort! i'll be there in a week!!!!

Sunday, August 28th – Arrival Day for everyone else!

We slept in! I mean really slept in. Not the normal, okay you can sleep until 8:00 “sleep in” that we do at Disney. I really let the kids sleep. We planned on going to Disney Quest today and it didn’t open until 11:30.

I woke up about 8:30 and played on my ipad for a while. Then I left the kids sleeping and wandered around taking pictures. It took a good 30 minutes for my lens to defog and it still refogged every so often.

I woke up the kids when I got back. They got dressed and I packed the bags and then called to get our them transferred to the Wilderness Lodge. About 10 minutes after they took the bags I thought “Hmmm, I probably should have taken out all our tickets out of our bags since they are kind of valuable.”

Or maybe because we needed them to get into Disney Quest!!! :lookaroun

Oh. My. Word.

Rookie mistake as dh would say.

We hightailed it to the lobby and hoped our bags weren’t already in transportation limbo! We saw them on a cart when we walked up. Phew! :D

We rescued the tickets and went to the food court for breakfast.

DisneyWorld2011249.jpg

DisneyWorld2011263.jpg

We took the boat to Downtown Disney and activated our tickets at guest services next to Disney Quest. It was a super easy process.

We got in line and were some of the first people in Disney Quest.

Disney Quest has a lot of haters. I fully admit we may not be the best judges. We don’t frequent arcades and are definitely not up on the latest video game technology, other than xbox. But we love Disney Quest! We went 3 times on this trip!

I know Disney should pour some money into it, but we always have a great time. There are so many fun things to do there! I hate that the Cheesecake Factory moved out, but I love that the fact that they took out the games that cost extra.

DisneyWorld2011266.jpg

The kids started off in Aladdin. I can’t take simulators so I just watched.

I wandered around and took pictures while they took a magic carpet ride. It's so hard to take pictures in DisneyQuest! But here some are just to give you an idea of what it's like if you haven't gone:

DisneyWorld2011278.jpg

Next we took a ride on the Jungle Cruise.

DisneyWorld2011280.jpg

Then we played Mighty Ducks Hockey! Ds got the high score of the day. He managed to win the game all 6 times we played it that week.

DisneyWorld2011290.jpg

DisneyWorld2011301.jpg

Then we did the linked NASCAR racers. So fun. I spun my Ds out! Woo hoo!!
