A Trip to the Moon: From Screen to the Stage

MV5BMzcyYzhlMzctYjg1NS00ODJlLTkxOTUtYmQ4YjgxMWY5MGFlXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNDE5MTU2MDE@._V1_UY268_CR1,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

A new stage show based on Georges Méliès 1902 silent film "A Trip to the Moon" which is considered to be the father of science fiction films, the first big use of special effects in films, and a landmark moment in French cinema.

The story of a group of astronomers taking cannon to the moon and battling strange creatures will be brought to life on stage using live actors and mostly practical effects with a few choice uses of screens for things like the Man on the Moon.

The theater will actually connect Main Street and Discoveryland since the 1902 film will connect to the turn of the century theme of Main Street with a cinema entrance and the heavy Jules Verne inspiration in the film and it's visuals will connect to the Verne inspired Discoveryland.

Bonus

A meet and greet with a large, puppet version of the Man on the Moon (from the poster to the film), will be added to Discoveryland near the theater entrance.

Indiana Jones: Acrobatie Spectaculaire
*This came from google translate. Was going for Stunt Spectacular. Don't know if that's right*

With Indiana Jones: Acrobatie Spectaculaire, some of the land around Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril will finally be used for an Indiana Jones expansion that has been wanted, and needed, for so long.

Much of the show will be similar to the Hollywood Studios counterpart with the three scenes involving the Temple escape scene, a bustling city market, and an airfield strip; with the latter two being themed to Germany pre-WW2.

Audience participation is still a huge part of this show as well were all instructions will be provided in either French or English where every show rotates; having the English shows at the top of the hour on even hours, and the French shows at the top of the hour on odd hours.

Bonus:
The new Meet & Greet will feature Indy, Marion, and other members of the show just outside of the show building having it similar to what you can do at WaterWorld in Universal Studios.

Coming to a brand new theatre in Fantasyland (located behind the railroad station), “Goofy’s Musical Mayhem” will be added, bring a brand new broadway-style comedy with the magic of Disney.

“Goofy’s Musical Mayhem” begins with Goofy talking to Bob Iger, and Bob Iger asks Goofy to direct a new show for the new theatre in Disneyland Paris, but with Goofy as a director, what could possibly go wrong?

The play obviously goes wrong as stage lights fall, set pieces collapse, and other stuff happens, and with the amazing characters and humor of the show, this will be a must-do experience for all guests.

Bonus: A new meet and greet in Adventureland with Indiana Jones will be created where guests have to solve various puzzles in an escape room themed to a temple with Indiana Jones.

La Tanière du Dragon

The Dragon’s Lair at Disneyland Paris will be turned into a unique venue, styled akin to Poseidon’s fury at Islands of Adventure. Guests begin with a wizards apprentice, who unleashed a Dragon’s Curse on the castle, putting it under its domain. You soon enter the cavern, where, using water and light, the apprentice conquers the dragon and saves the kingdom, with the help of a younger audience member.

Bonus:
The Hyperspace Mountain queue will be rerouted to align for a new “Rebel Base” meet n’ greet, with Chewie, Luke, and Rey.

In Disneyland Paris' Fantasyland, don't forget to catch the Parade of the Dancing Flowers (Défilé des Fleurs Dansantes); watch as floats, characters, and dancing flowers parade across Fantasyland. During these times, there's also special foods and drinks for this parade, such as Dancing Daisies (Marguerites dansantes) drink; these delicacies can be found at Au Chalet de la Marionnette, Pizzeria Bella Notte, and Toad Hall Restaurant. With so many spectacular dances, floats, characters, and even its own music score, this parade gives Disneyland Paris an extra "oomph".

Bonus: Visit Snow White in a new area of the Princess Pavilion in Fantasyland.

English Translation
Sculpting its way into the Videopolis Theater in Discoveryland will be a thirty-five minute live-action theatre show based on a brilliant yet eccentric late-19th century astronomer Dr. Absolon Durand, who through his long range telescope, has discovered a parallel 5 dimensional universe where he and the audience can travel not only in 4 dimensional physical space, but through time as well.

In this parallel universe Dr. Durand's goal is to educate the minds of visitors to Discoveryland on the true history of human kind, and as his teleportation devices whisks the audience away to the parallel universe, we see a world not unlike our own, yet every move Dr. Durand makes, and every person he interacts with, causes a ripple effect through time and space in the present day

The show features interactions with Aristotle, Julius Caesar, Leonardo Da Vinci, Galileo Galilei, Napoleon, and finally Dr. Durand's idol, Jules Verne, who tells Dr. Durand that the past is the past, and we only should learn from it, and not try to change it, leaving the audience on the note of which that is what fantasy novels are for.

CHALLENGE 7

JULY

In July we celebrate independence! With fireworks and picnics, we gather together for a festival of patriotism to honor our ancestors who overthrew the yoke of European tyranny and created a new nation based on democracy. You guessed right, everybody, on July 14th we celebrate –

BASTILLE DAY

24383168717_6181c5ff4d_o_d.jpg

The French Revolution took direct inspiration from the American Revolution and reimagined it for a European audience. Disneyland Paris did similarly with Disneyland. Tony Baxter’s brilliant creative team redid Disney in a beautiful new European style. Sadly, the park has rarely updated, and presently neighboring Walt Disney Studio Paris requires more attention. With no major E-ticket additions in Disneyland Paris’s near future, how can it remain vital?

-Challenge-

How about a show? Let’s give Disneyland Paris a “must see” live show. It can be theatrical, fireworks, a parade, whatever would be a major draw. And if you can, give it European influences.

-Bonus-

With one additional sentence…hmmm…How about let’s also give Paris an all-new character meet ‘n’ greet. Doing so will net you an automatic extra point!

-Rules-

You may use between 1 and 3 sentences and up to 1 image. The deadline is Saturday, February 3rd, at midnight EST.

-Tips-

K.I.S.S. – Keep it simple, silly. Try not to complicate or overthink things too much. It’s a simple, casual competition – there are no eliminations. Propose as you please!

-Judging Criteria-

Is it creative?

Is it (generally) realistic?

Does it fit thematically/visually?

Good luck everyone! If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask. Now go create!

Similar in design to the Just Add Water show at Disney's California Adventure, watch the fountains of Sleeping Beauty castle as they tell the stories of Fantasyland during eau magique. This is a short show that is preformed several times daily, which coordinates fountains to music as they dance and turn into different shapes of Disney Characters. These shows are set at random, but can include music from Sleeping Beauty,Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Dumbo, and Pinocchio.

day-end-water-show.jpg

Bonus: There is a surprise meet and greet every so often between the Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Peter Pan segments. This includes the Good Fairies, Dopey, and Smee!

Mickey's Mystical Journey
disney-festival-fantasy-maleficent-030914.jpg

Join mickey mouse as he encounters many of France's mythological creatures, both big and small, when he tries to find the scepter of dragobert. Many France godswill also appear to either help guide mickey or harm mickey in his quest. Since some France myths can fit disney, expect the disney fairies and disney dragons to appear at some point in this exciting show.

BONUS:
Replacing Magic Eye Theater, meet the timekeeper and 9-eyes in their lab once again as part of the upcoming new discoveryland! This will utilize the best of the interactive animatronic technology disney has to offer!
Every challenge, your proposals appear within an hour of the challenge posting! That’s incredibly impressive.

Your proposal’s quality is quite impressive too. I love how you’ve tied it back directly to French mythology, with a smattering of Disney characters. That dragon image is incredible. I’m strongly reminded of France’s processional giants (see pic), a cultural heritage for centuries. Intended or not, that sort of Francophilic detail really makes this proposal stand out.

Bonus: I’m not a meet ‘n’ greet fan, typically, but I would do this without hesitation. Sounds a lot like Turtle Talk, which is a great way of “plussing” the genre.

Coming soon to Walt Disney Studios Paris, the all new Disney Cinemagique Parade will take guests into the movies on an astounding adventure through the movies. See the action of the Marvel Superheroes, the Force of the Stars of Star Wars, the fun of Pixar, and the magic of Disney Animation as these four worlds collide in this daily event to be found only at Walt Disney Studios Paris.
Since you were summoned exclusively for this round, it’s OK that you read “Disneyland Paris” to mean the entire resort. We’ll actually be visiting WDSP later…eventually ;). Regarding this as a WDSP parade, though, it’s a ton of fun.

In this context, I’d say the mashup of Disney, Pixar, Marvel and LucasFilm is totally acceptable, especially with a cinema theme tying them all together. Almost like you’re resurrecting WDSP’s sadly defunct Cinemagique show (which also sadly I didn’t get a chance to see) in parade form.

Disney Stars & Cars Motorcade

This former entertainment lineup makes it return to Disney Studios, but with all new cars. Instead of the classic American cars, characters now ride in cars from their “home” country.

Bonus

Pocahontas and Meeko have now arrived as meet n' greet characters in Frontierland's Indian Village.
My, some of us are really anxious to get to WDSP! I understand why, a studio park is a logical place for live shows and parades, and you’ve proposed a nice European reimagining of a lost classic. Good call using various European car makers. Would like to hear a few more examples, though. Maybe a third sentence could flesh out a strong underlying concept.

Bonus: I thought DLP already had this meet ‘n’ greet, but if they don’t then obviously they should.

You totally “get” what makes DLP unique, and A Trip to the Moon is a perfect choice. It’s really easy to picture a proscenium stage show replicating Melies’ cinematography. Maybe it could even be a recreated film shoot (even though we’re not in WDSP) in the style of Hugo. Letting Discoveryland and Main Street share this show is an inspired touch, a genius addition to Paris’s themed arcades. Way to shoot for the moon with this one!

Good call on Indy, as that corner of Adventureland desperately needs a major draw, and Temple of Peril simply isn’t enough. This show is a crowd pleaser, a worthy choice for cloning, and carefully reframed around Europe. (Though a Last Crusade show could’ve been interesting.) I’m curious about how the show change when, moving from a studios park to a castle park. The film shoot premise wouldn’t work in DLP – we’re all really gung-ho about WDSP, aren’t we?!

Bonus: A natural tie-in.

I’ve seen some really rousing Fantasyland theater shows, like Mickey and the Wondrous Book in Hong Kong, and yours sounds very much in that vein. Goofy is a nice choice as the lead; can’t think of many attractions where he’s the headliner, and the Goof will lend this show a distinct energy. (Can’t think of many shows where Iger features eisner – er, either.) A little more show storyline content (plus an explicit European connection) would be really elevate this.

Bonus: Ooh, an escape room! I’ve long been fascinated with how Disney might approach the genre, with Indy being the natural thematic choice.
