Oddest thing you pack?

What happened?

Is there a reason we should wipe down our rooms? I have never thought of this!

Dateline did a show talking about how many germs are all over hotel rooms. They mentioned the light switches, door knobs, remote control (had the most germs, I believe), ect. They also used a black light on the bedspreads, which is why I take them off first thing in any hotel room. The show came on several years ago.

Yep, saw that episode and since then have never left for any trip without the trusty wipes. We also bring plasticware as well as Lock N Lock containers. Just in case, to bring some Magic home. As far as sleeping through the night, I'm one that has to run the TV.

I keep a small pair of folding scissors in my bag. They do come in handy.

I also take Dawn Wash and Toss with me to wash our refillable mugs.

Wow! That is a really good idea. I am always trying to clean those things out and I am always disgusted when I can't and that thought never occured to me!!!

Thanks!

I iron everything that needs it and pack those items on their hangers. When we get to our hotel, I spray each hanging item with Wrinkle-Release and hang it on the rod. Works like a charm!
I also pack plenty of sealable baggies for liquid items and a large trash bag that I put under the sink area for laundry.

Where do you get those Dawn Wash and Toss? I looked for them for my last trip and couldn't find them anywhere. I wanted them for cleaning sippy cups as well. Instead I brought a travel size container of dish liquid which leaked inside my suitcase (even though I had it sealed in a bag). Oh well, now my suitcase smells lemon fresh!:p

I am going to definitely bring clorox wipes now, Im not a germiphobe at all, but the remote thing is something I bet has never been cleaned.

I bring slim fast...I think they are great for breakfast and fill me up so I can make it until lunch.

I have always bought them at the grocery store, Walmart, or Target in the past. I have been having some problems finding them for our upcoming trip. I just went to the Dawn website and they said they have been discontinued.

I have a few left, but after they are gone, what I may do is make my own by putting a little dish soap on a papertowel, folded, and place it in a zip lock bag. Then all I'll need to do is wet it so it will soap up. I'll just make several.

Trash bags are a must! We are DVC members- we always overdo on the trash!

We couldn't leave home without our pool cooler/noodles! Our cooler has a shoulder strap- we stop at the ice machine for a quick fill and - voila! cold drinks by the pool! Of course we bring our own dollar store noodles for the pool. (Who wants to pay $3.00 at the store? They make for great neck support in the car on the way down.)

I'm so happy I saw someone else say air freshner! Three people+ one bathroom = Lysol's my friend!

I bring a small sound machine.
It plays meditation music.
It also has other sounds like chirping birds and bubbling brooks and ocean waves.
It helps me fall asleep.
I started using it when I was working swing shifts and I had to sleep during the day. It helped to drown out outside traffic noises.
Now I can't sleep without it on.:snore:

And I thought I was the only one who would say I pack my own pillows. They take up a bit of room in the suitcases, but I don't care - I can't sleep on one that isn't my own!!!!

I also pack zip locks bags. Scissors come with me no matter what - I do cross stitch while on vacation.

Yeah, I've heard of someone doing that before! But instead of using papertowels they used baby wipes. I think they put a little dish liquid on the baby wipe then they let it dry. The baby wipes are a little stronger than a paper towel I would suppose. I guess I'll be trying this the next time as I won't be bringing dish liquid with me again!!! Thanks for the tip!

I have to bring a fan. Not for the air, but for the humming noise it makes. I can't sleep in a completely quiet room and the a/c doesn't work because it cycles on and off, and I never know if the fan will be one that I can keep on :snore:

Well, I am glad to know I'm not the only one who does this! And for the exact same reason...it's too quiet!

As far as packing strange things, I read once where someone packs a 50-lb fish scale, so they can weigh their bags before they go to the airport, making sure they don't have to pay an over-weight-limit fee. A good, practical idea, but it still gave me a chuckle!

Great ideas in this thread...I really like the Clorox wipes, too. Just put them on my shopping list.

Someone mentioned packing a cooler...here's what we did a few years ago. We bought a soft-sided cooler (without wheels), and it collapses nicely for repacking for the return trip. I was getting tired of buying a styrofoam ice chest each trip, and now we can carry drinks and snacks out to the pool with ease. It's paid for itself many times over.

I recommend you get a "good" one...don't buy a cheap-o, or you'll wind up tossing it after only a few uses. I speak from experience!

So, I found a really good one online, and it's durable, and I even use it from time to time here at home, as well.

Pool Noodles - someone else does that :) I thought I would be the only one. They fit in a suitcase too if you bend them. My kids love to have them available.

I also used to bring these little individual packaged compressed cakes of laundry detergent - but they are manufacture discontinued. So now, the magic of the vaccum sealer comes into play. I have also vaccum sealed "non-crushable" snacks/foodstuffs (dry soup, pasta, etc) and taken them. My favorite applicance. I vaccum seal everything :)

Thats about it. No bedding, no wipes, no hangers, - I guess I like to live danderously (or disgustingly :) )

We bring pillows ourselves...not for us, but for our kids. Have you thought about using on of the space saving bags? They even make ones that you don't need to vacuum out - you just smash the contents (kind of rolling them) to get the air out...convenient!

I always pack those Dixie Cups, disposable. Have to be careful how you pack them or they get squished!

I also bring a collapsable laundry hamper, fits nicely in the suitcase. Then my dirty stuff isn't all over the floor or just stuffed in a suitcase.

Extra ziplock bags in all sizes...always find uses for them.

Crystal lite pouches for bottled water.

Straws....many places don't have them.....

I think I better start packing those wipes....I'm getting the creepies! :lookaroun

I bring all that stuff too! If you plan on bringing a collapsable laundry hamper do invest in a decent one. The cheap dollar store ones tear almost immediately and don't even try to lift it by the handles or all you'll get is the handles in you hands (they rip right off). But the good ones are great for keeping laundry organized on vacation.
