NYT: "Universal....Takes Aim at Disney"

Obviously, I have not seen the dark ride portions of the attraction. I have seen the mountain range (from other portions of the park, mind you) and photos--and even if the dark ride portion is only on par with Mermaid, it will still be light years ahead of Test Track due to its setting and the kinetic energy it will have. At least, for me.

Mr. Bricker you are sounding a bit like a Disney Lifestyle apologist here ... how many trips do you have planned for the rest of 2012? Do you have meals booked for six months from now?:ROFLOL:

Mermaid is plastic and, frankly, shows that Disney isn't stepping things up now even on what should be slam dunk slow-moving Omnimover rides.

For being the most pricey attraction in theme park history, I'm expecting (and demanding as a stock holder) that RSRs knocks my socks off. I don't want TT with slightly better theming (the inside of a 7-11 would be better to be fair). JTTCoTE is also a TT clone ... but you sure as (blank) would never know it when riding. RSRs needs to be that kind of a WOW!

BTW, on another subject, but spoke to a friend who rode Transformers at USS recently and was GREATLY impressed ... said it was much better than Spidey (which to me is very high praise) ... didn't get to ask how it compares to Potter's FJ.

One thing that universal or any other theme park will never touch is the detail and care that goes into each ride and land. You barley even notice when you go from land to land in Magic Kingdom. From music to architechture it's something that is unlike any where else. Cast members are always gonig to be there cause they love their job. I am friends with a bunch and they love their job and it shows when the guest come to the parks. From what I heard not many people enjoy their universal job besides the ablity to get into the city walk with discounts.

Besides that I think people are forgeting the new snow white roller coaster that will be coming out in a year. New Fantasyland is getting a roller coaster. While it may not be an everest which I'd say would rival the hulk, I think that it's got new innovative features to it that will add to the excitement.

All in all though I don't think disney is endanger of losing its title cause disney will always be the parks for families, and memories. No matter the rides or random assortment of movies that Universal throws together they won't be able to take that from disney. It's the magic, innovation, and memories that keeps families coming back. I went there when I was younger and I'm 23 now and while I'm no where near thinking about starting a family I do intend on taking my family to WDW to keep making more and more memories with there.

On top of that which other park honestly offers you the chance to go run around the parks for three days then jump straight onto a curise ship with a very small amount of hassel?

On an extra side note, typically the imagineers and otehr cast members that start to work fro universal are typically the ones who fall through the cracks. Plus I don't see where it said anything about this guy being an ex-Imagineer. He could've worked for disney as a custodial cast member for a summer and can claim to be a former cast member. As for his qoute rides are a small portion of a theme park.

Nah ... it's too late and I'm in too nice a mood to go after a newbie. So, welcome and thanks for your opinions.

Sadly they gave up on that idea about 36 months ago.

Now they are slowly and quietly switching to panic and limitation. Which could be good for everyone, but not as good as it should have been.

Whilst Uni will still keep aiming as high as possible.

Oh Marni...it makes me so sad to read that...

Quite the meaty, almost inflammatory first post, don't you think? That little plug about the cruise was cute, I guess.

The irony of course is that despite all the complaining I'd wager a good majority of you still go to WDW fairly often (or as often as time & budget allows). That teaches TDO nothing. Taking days out of your WDW trip for UOR is a good start (and how things began with us back in 04), but if you strongly believe that the Mouse needs a kick in the pants, you shouldn't be visiting until they build something to wow you. I haven't visited the parks since 08, if I'm recalling correctly. I'd like to visit for the New Fantasyland - unfortunately, Little Mermaid, Seven Dwarves, and especially Storybook Circus aren't going to cut it.

I'd sure to love to make a trick to DLR and check out RSR and the rest of Cars Land (along with Buena Vista Street, for good measure). Funny how that works?

Disney did not comment, but I am sure this is not the press they want.

The telling dominance of disney is in the stat that uni's attendance for all 3 us parks is just about the same as just MK. Uni matters but they are never going to beat disney because they don't have the room to stuff in more guests. I think one of the biggest mistakes with wwhp is that they did not expand ioa for it, but rather just redeveloped an existing area.

^ what's to stop Uni buying more land / taking back into ownership? Aside from the spare land they already have?

What other land did Universal own that they sold off??? I know they had land they sold and now apartments are built on it, behind the area formerly known known as Amity... Is that the Lockheed land???

That's so funny. I have a friend who is in Florida right now (vacation home) and planning to do one or two days in a park. She said that the "locals" told her that Florida has two theme parks - one is fun and the other is for little kids who want to be pirates or princesses.

I'm trying to talk some sense into her
Disney is going for "magical" and Uni is going for "fun." Been that way for years and years. Almost a decade ago, I began to notice that.

Unfortunately, Disney has been more and more about little kids. They want to make it a place that the most scaredy-cat 4yo and his overprotective mom will enjoy. This doesn't do much for 11yo boys.

I love Disney and Uni both.

I do wish that Disney would quit changing everything to make it better for ridiculous people, though.

A perfect example is AE --> Stitch. AE was an incredible attraction that rivals some of the stuff Uni does today (not in terms of technology, but of intensity and entertainment value). They got soft to appease the parents who ignored the signage and turned it into the wuss-mess we have today.

If Disney can have coasters that the entire family can't ride (because of height), what's wrong with having a show attraction or two that's not entirely appropriate for everyone?

In the 60s and 70s, it was fine to build a park full of rides that EVERYONE could ride together, but times have changed. It's time to add things that different generations and age demographics can enjoy together, even if an entire family wouldn't do it alone.

Uni is doing this, and succeeding.

You changed this... you changed this LOL.. But, I think I understand why :)

Anyway, people keep saying Universal is set for some good, interesting times... And that is what I am looking forward to most... Hopefully Comcast sticks to their word, injects the money they said they would into the parks, and make Universal even better than it already is....

The land you're thinking of is near the convention center, a good distance from the rest of the resort. The small plot behind Amity was an employee parking lot before it was converted into apartments. The only places left for Uni to expand are the large plots to the south of what's currently there.

OK, I wasn't sure which land was which... Thanks

Y'all missed the part where he talked about how Uni was gonna buy and bulldoze Dr. Phillips High School and build a Marvel park and a Harry Potter hotel?
Really? That's too bad...it was a fine post.:lookaroun

Ooh. That would certainly throw a monkey wrench into Disney's plans to market the Marvel characters with a third park in Anaheim, or a revamp of Disneyland's Tomorrowland.

I'm not a particularly big fan of Universal parks, except their Hollywood tram tour is typically excellent. But this could be very fun to watch play out from coast to coast, even for hardcore Disney fans!
