NewfieFan's "I haven't done a TR in a while" TR!

Where have I been? That's a good question! We had two wonderful trips to the World last year and I didn't report those to you guys... I know, for shame! Life kind of got in the way a lot and well, mostly I was just slack!
I'll refresh your memory a little... we took a trip in Sept. '10 and we were smack in the middle of a building a house. You can read all about it here http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/newfiefans-long-overdue-sept-tr.725069/
It was on that trip when we bought into DVC. Well I'm happy to report it was a good decision for us. We used our points for two trips last year and stayed at Kidani Village both times. I picked Kidani mainly b/c it requires less points and we were trying to stretch them out over two trips. We ended up falling in love with Kidani and now I can't imagine staying anywhere else.
So this is actually our third time staying in Kidani and it did not disappoint!
Our trip began on April 15th. We tried a different flight this time around, we took an afternoon flight from St. John's which got us into Orlando around 11pm. We left our home at around 6:30 am to make the four and half hour drive to the airport. One car ride, two flights, and two stopovers, later we arrived in MCO! We arrived at Kidani and got to our room somewhere around 12:30am local time (which is actually 2am for us). So, if you're keeping track that was around 18hrs. of traveling. The bed at Kidani never looked so good! The kids however were surprisingly upbeat and asked if the pool was open. Ummmm, NO!

The kids begged to see the pool so I took them for a quick walk through the lobby and down to the pool.
An empty night time lobby...

Disney 2012 024 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

Needless to say it was bedtime at this point. I'm not even sure if we changed our clothes or just fell on the bed and crashed!
The next morning I woke refreshed and quite happy to be waking up in Kidani. We were a little bummed when we got our room assignment the night before b/c we were quite a distance from the lobby. The last two times we've been fairly lucky b/c our room hasn't been too far from the pool and lobby. I suppose I could have asked if they had anything closer but we were so tired that we just wanted to get to our room... wherever that may be. As mentioned we had standard view booked but when I threw open the curtains and stepped out on my balcony this is what I saw...
Hello Okapi!

Here's the view we had of the Pembe Savannah...

Disney 2012 028 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

I guess because we were on the edge of the Savannah they don't consider it "savannah view" but yet we had an excellent view of the savannah! Before this trip I couldn't imagine why anyone would pay extra (either with points or money) for savannah view. There's lots of public areas off the lobby to view the animals and there's a lookout on the savannah as well. And who spends time in their room looking at animals? Well, apparently we do! If I was in the room I was on my balcony looking at animals and taking pictures. I would wake up early just to see what the animals were "up to"! So yeah, if you like viewing animals - savannah view is totally worth it!
After I dragged myself away from the balcony I started unpacking and getting the kids ready for breakfast. We took the lovely walk over to Jambo House and had breakfast at the Mara.

She was very insistant that Mickey Ears must be worn to breakfast...

The cupcake was really good but as usual it was too much for me to eat by myself. The dark chocolate cupcake went well with the raspberry flavored icing and there was some sort of raspberry filling in it as well.
I don't usually drag my kids on anything, I would never force them on a ride that they didn't want to go on. I encourage them to step outside their comfort level but never to the point of forcing screaming kids on a ride. The only reason I kept pushing for them to get on this ride was b/c it was something they really wanted to do. And I knew they would be disappointed if they chickened out. But I learned my lesson.. if children want to get on a ride they have to behave themselves in the queue as well. If they cry or say they're scared then they'll be leaving the queue in the future.
I love ToT but I only ever experienced it as an adult!

Mhhmm I'm definitely trying that next time!
That is very true though they were so excited to go on! I commend you though for not being one of those parents that'll make their child go on even if the kid's like dry heaving! Oo silly kids what do we do with them? Haha! :p You're kids are adorable though and they seem so well behaved and loving! :)

Boy, I wish they would have though. Talk about making a little girl feel like a princess! That cupcake looks sooooo good! Makes me want one right now. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait til December. Can't wait to hear more aout your trip! Thanks for sharing!

Sorry for the delay but I'm back and writing...

After our ToT "incident" I didn't think the kids would go on another ride but without too much convincing they agreed to go on Star Tours for daddy.

Disney 2012 252 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

We ended up getting one of the more intense sequences but the kids were fine (although I think they both took off their 3D glasses at one point). I do enjoy the new ride. Daddy had to stop and look at Star Wars stuff in the gift shop (of course). The kids were getting ansty so I took them outside to look at the pins we bought earlier. We had bought some of the mystery pin packs and Anna was thrilled with her new pin (apparently it was the one she always wanted).

Disney 2012 251 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

Anna really wanted to see Jake and sure enough he was there and with not much of a line...

(This is Jake from Jake and the Neverland Pirates - it's on Disney Junior)

By this point it was time for FPs at TSMM...

Always a fun ride!

Both kids wanted to stop into the HISTA playground so we headed in that direction.
Here's little miss posing in a spider web...

Disney 2012 264 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

And this is where the next bad incident of the day happened. Peter and I had parked ourselves in our usual spot while the kids ran wild. After a short time we notice quite a commotion next to us. A young mother is freaking out and I mean FREAKING OUT. She's screaming, "Where is she?" "Where's my baby?" "She's gone!" etc. And an older woman (turns out to be the woman's mother) is walking in circles asking the same questions but not quite screaming. After watching this for a few painful seconds, I approach the grandmother and ask if they have a child lost and if they've told a cast member yet. She was so out of it I couldn't even get an answer out of her. There was no point to talk to the mother, she was literally on the ground, rolling around, and screaming and crying. No lie! I gently take the grandmother by the arm and lead her to a CM. The CM is the not the least bit concerned and casually says, "Don't worry, she's here somewhere!" Well, quite a crowd has gathered at this point and everyone is trying to help. People are asking questions, trying to figure out what the lost child looks like. Lots of mothers have volunteered to go on the hunt. Other children are quite distraught by the whole scene. The mother is losing it at this point. Now, I'm a mom... I get it! If anyone has read my other TRs, you'll know that I did lose a child for a brief second and it's the worst feeling in the world. Your heart stops and your stomach lodges itself up in your throat - not fun! But this is a play place where kids can disappear right from in under your nose (with all the tunnels and slides, etc.) and there's only one exit! The child had only gone missing when the mother first started to freak, it's not like the child had been missing for a long time or anything. And the mother was only walking in circles in the same little area and screaming. Not the best way to find your child! Finally, we got some answers as to what the child looked like. A mother comes down over a set of stairs and gives a description of a child, she walks back up, picks up the child, and brings her down. The mother grabs her in a movie-like preformance and drops to the ground crying and squeezing the poor thing. There was a collective sigh of relief from every parent in that playground. Anyways, the child is not upset and looks very confused. Well, every other child is practically tramatized by the whole event. All you could hear was parents answering questions and explaining the situation to their own children. My kids thought someone was dying and maybe daddy should have done something about it. And that was the end of our play time. My husband is an ER doc and has seen some pretty tense situations but he said this one tops the list. He had never seen anyone panic to that extreme before!

We decided to exit DHS. We were going to DTD this evening for supper and Peter wanted to stop back to our resort first. Let's take one more pic...

I forgot to mention at some point during our day at DHS we had lunch on Sunset blvd. and I hit up RnR one more time. On my way to RnR there was a CM handing out paper reconds with stickers to decorate them with. I quickly went over to grab a couple for the kids (to keep them entertained for a second) but the CM noticed my Orange Bird shirt and commented on it. She wanted to know if I had bought it at the event yesterday. Of course, I didn't have a clue what she was talking about. So she was the one who informed me of the little ceremony they had in Adventureland at the Sunshine Tree Terrace. She said there were no Orange Bird shirts in a ladies fit and she was disappointed. I had bought that shirt months ago at the American Adventure in Epcot. Sometimes Disney merch makes no sense!!!

Back to the room for a quick second but there's always time to take pictures of animals...

We took a bus to DTD with not much time to spare before our ADR.

Oh look, the balloon is flying. I finally thought Peter and Anna would get a chance to ride it (but it was grounded by the time we finished dinner).

Disney 2012 275 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

(I hope this balloon comes back actually. I'm in the camp with those that like the balloon!)

I've never eaten here... partly because I've never heard a good review...

We were dining at Raglan Road this evening...

Disney 2012 277 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

Disney 2012 278 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

I had eaten here once before with sweetpee and her hubby but this was the kids first time. I was hoping for a seat in the main dining area so the kids could see the stage and the dancing. And here's where we were seated...

Disney 2012 283 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

It was quite close to the dancing stage, the back of my head touched the platform!

Here's what my view looked like...

Disney 2012 286 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

It felt like the dancers were dancing on OUR table. The kids loved it! Anna spent the rest of the evening "River Dancing" everywhere she walked.

I ordered the same thing I had the last time but it wasn't as good as I remembered (it still wasn't bad, just not as good). It was the Cluck Curry which is chicken breast in a curry broth and steamed almond rice on the side.

Disney 2012 284 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

After dinner we popped into D Street and the kids had to color a Vinylmation coloring sheet at the "cool" table...

Disney 2012 288 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

And the kids traded their first Vinylmation (they were quite proud)...

Disney 2012 291 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

We did some shopping on the Marketplace side and then called it a night.

I want these dishes...

Enjoying your trip report. I can relate to the ToT thing. Our daughter was 5(yes she was tall enough) when she first went on it. She was very excited before we got in line a little scared in line and then the pre show is when she melted down. We told her that she would be ok and she only had to ride it once and if she didn't like it then she didn't have to ride anymore. She was still kinda whimpering when we sat down, she screamed thru the whole ride. It turns out they were screams of joy! As soon as we got off she wanted to get right back on. It was her dad that didn't want to ride it anymore.:D So we rode it about 5 more times and even to this day it's her favorite ride.

Caught up again! Yaaaaayyy!!!

Lots to say but I doubt I'll remember it all. Let's see...looooved Anna's VIP treatment at the BBB even if it wasn't in the castle itself. Personally, I'll take a store like WoD as my own personal castle vs. the one in the MK. LOL!

Your brave little angels stickin' it out on ToT brings back memories! When Brian was finally tall enough to ride (I think this had to be in 2005) he put on his brave face and off he went with me & Chandler. Tracey had a headache so he hung behind with my mom's ex who raised me (he still lived in Orlando at the time & would come do parks with us some). So we get thru the pre-show and he was really quiet. Like his first day of kindergarten, stoically silent. I was reassuring him all the way thru the boiler room into the ride then hugging him close for the start of the ride. Then, the drop. So funny! The thing stops and he has this wide-eyed expression but was still just silent as could be. Not even a peep. Youda thunk he actually did see a ghost. The whole way walking out, looking at our pic, etc. his expression never changed. Still wide-eyed shock. We get halfway down Sunset when we meet back up with Tracey & Dad. Right up until we walked up to them that expression never changed. We walked up to them and they asked Brian how it was and he snaps right into a nonchalant "Eh, it's not that big a deal." Riiiiiight! LOL!

The flippin'-out mom sounded like fun. Did anyone offer to buy her a drink to take the edge off maybe? LOL! My mom had a few nice flip-outs at WDW when I was a kid but those were because she found herself in a tight space and the clausterphobia kicked her butt. We had to leave Epcot & go home (we were locals) once just because the "trip" in the hydrolator nearly killed her. LOL! I've always wondered how entertaining it could be to put her in one of the M:S ride vehicles. I bet she could take that joker apart piece by piece from the inside out. LOL!

Bittersweet reading about y'all going to Raglan Road! That was sooooo much fun! Like I said, I think I could actually be convinced to return to WDW if y'all were there just because the company would be so stinkin' awesome.

I don't remember seeing that big window display for the new Mickey dishes when we were there. I liked the dishes a lot and was soooo tempted but they're just so similar to what I already have which was 3 designs or so ago. **sigh**

Can't wait to read more! I love your TRs!

That would have been my wife . . . I would have been trying my best to blend into the background.

And before any wives come down on my head, I've learned after these many years to let my wife have her meltdown or suffer the consequences.

As the kid of someone who did just this thing in Epcot I can honestly say the reaction was:

Mom's freaking out. Again. ----> I don't know her even tho I look like a small version of her. ----> OMG, they're escorting us out an emergency exit. ----> Now we have to leave because she won't stop crying. ----> Sometimes Mom really stinks.

I don't recall my step dad being angry. He certainly was just as willing to make a beeline for the exit, tho. He never would've been the type to be embarrassed into that reaction. When people say they don't care what others think, that man really does NOT care and will say or do anything in front of anyone at anytime if he has a mind to. I think he was just trying to get my mom away where she could lay down in the comforts of her own bed.

Sounds awful and I hate I ever thought my mom stunk for having full-blown panic issues on top of her medical issues. ((Part of what contributes to her inability to walk the parks today comes from her spine issues that were largely brought on by a bad car accident when I was maybe 9 or 10 years old.)) Back then I was too little to grasp anything about mental health issues so just the fact that I would be mad if we left because her back/neck hurt so bad she was in tears is enough to make me feel like a grade-A schmuck. Nowadays Mom takes medications and things to keep her calm in crowds although tight spaces/crowds/heights can still impact her ability to enjoy herself. Like she says, she has to leave my brother and his girls to return to the resort to decompress often. No more holy-crappin'-flip-outs but if she didn't take her meds and have the ability to escape to a nearby respite it would definitely happen.

Maybe that mom was off her meds or something? I'm soooo not trying to be ugly or make jokes at her expense. I know when traveling I often forget to take my allergy meds, etc. Also, what if before her trip her doctor changed a prescription on her? My mom does just fine until her doctor changes one of her meds or adds one that affects them. Oh my. I can't tell ya how many times I've wanted to smack her old doctor who'd change up her meds for no reason other than to do it. Totally throws her into a miserable, insane emotional roller coaster. Ugh!

Sarah (right?) - SO GOOD to see a TR from you - and also from a fellow Maritimer. It's actually so funny because I notice all your little "Canadian" comments and how things are changed: how the pool is an attraction because of the weather, pop vs. soda.. And the awareness that we're not the only ones that have to drive 3+ hours to get to an airport!

The kids are getting so big - and cute! I love the name Anna - though I have to agree about the pink hair, not my first choice! You're right about the BBB though - and when you're the star of the show, it's definitely worth that Visa swipe!

I'd say within the next two or three trips you'll have two partners on the TOT and maybe even RNRC - they can do it! The story is too funny, though - my little sister was like that originally (she was a total weenie) but she improved, thankfully. I guess you don't want them to grow up too fast though.

Keep 'er up! I love this TR =)

Yay Boma! Have a great time in Sept. (when are you going?)

As mentioned above I like The Seas with Nemo... but yes, you should see Turtle Talk at least once (hopefully you'll get the "good" Crush).

I will be there the 26th-30th I'll be running the Tower of Terror 10-miler!!!

Oh my, that story about your kids going on the Tower was pretty funny! Kids are something else. I remember loving it from the first moment I rode it! (I think I was 10) And I have never looked back since...that ride is my number 1. I swear if I could marry that ride, I would. Maybe as your kids get older they will warm up to it.

You were too little to grasp what was going on so don't beat yourself up for feeling that way... it must have been hard.

Peter came to the conclusion that the mother must have some sort of panic/anxiety disorder to react in such a strong way. Lots of people forget their medications on vacay or don't take them properly. Also, some meds when mixed with alcohol can produce almost the opposite effect. So who knows what was going on!?! I too, tried not to judge but it was an awkard and odd experience for everyone involved!

It's Sarah! :) Maritimers unite!!! Aren't you jealous of those that can just get on a plane and land in Orlando!?!

I'm not holding my breath but I hope the kids step out of their shells in the years to come. I can't wait to have ride buddies!

(Daddy picked out the name Anna!)

I guess your trip is getting close now. Good luck on your race!

The next morning found me out on the balcony again. Here's one of the safari-worker-people waving at me. She just finished putting out feed for those deer (I forget their name... Uyula, Uyala, something).

We were all excited to be heading to Blizzard Beach today. It was last Sept. when we tried the WPs for the first time and fell in love with them. I think the kids look forward to the WPs the most now.

I have no pictures of all our fun because I put the camera in the locker and left it there. But pictures or not... you'll have to take my word that fun was had by all. Teamboat Springs has to be our favorite.

We left BB and headed back to the room to get cleaned up. This was mine and Peter's night out. Looks like we picked the perfect time to be in our room getting ready - this is what the weather was doing outside...

It was really raining hard!

Anna was missing her pink hair so this was the best replacement I could fine...

Our first stop was the Poly to drop the kids off...

(The kids thought the Neverland Club was great.)

Then Peter and I were off to Citrico's. This was our first time inside the GF - true story! I think I may have been inside the lobby when I was younger.

(Quite a stunning lobby!)

The rain has stopped and the coloring outside is just beautiful...

That's right, we were celebrating 12 years of wedded bliss! (Geez, we're getting old!)
