NewfieFan's "I haven't done a TR in a while" TR!

Where have I been? That's a good question! We had two wonderful trips to the World last year and I didn't report those to you guys... I know, for shame! Life kind of got in the way a lot and well, mostly I was just slack!
I'll refresh your memory a little... we took a trip in Sept. '10 and we were smack in the middle of a building a house. You can read all about it here http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/newfiefans-long-overdue-sept-tr.725069/
It was on that trip when we bought into DVC. Well I'm happy to report it was a good decision for us. We used our points for two trips last year and stayed at Kidani Village both times. I picked Kidani mainly b/c it requires less points and we were trying to stretch them out over two trips. We ended up falling in love with Kidani and now I can't imagine staying anywhere else.
So this is actually our third time staying in Kidani and it did not disappoint!
Our trip began on April 15th. We tried a different flight this time around, we took an afternoon flight from St. John's which got us into Orlando around 11pm. We left our home at around 6:30 am to make the four and half hour drive to the airport. One car ride, two flights, and two stopovers, later we arrived in MCO! We arrived at Kidani and got to our room somewhere around 12:30am local time (which is actually 2am for us). So, if you're keeping track that was around 18hrs. of traveling. The bed at Kidani never looked so good! The kids however were surprisingly upbeat and asked if the pool was open. Ummmm, NO!

The kids begged to see the pool so I took them for a quick walk through the lobby and down to the pool.
An empty night time lobby...

Disney 2012 024 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

Needless to say it was bedtime at this point. I'm not even sure if we changed our clothes or just fell on the bed and crashed!
The next morning I woke refreshed and quite happy to be waking up in Kidani. We were a little bummed when we got our room assignment the night before b/c we were quite a distance from the lobby. The last two times we've been fairly lucky b/c our room hasn't been too far from the pool and lobby. I suppose I could have asked if they had anything closer but we were so tired that we just wanted to get to our room... wherever that may be. As mentioned we had standard view booked but when I threw open the curtains and stepped out on my balcony this is what I saw...
Hello Okapi!

Disney 2012 027 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

Here's the view we had of the Pembe Savannah...

Disney 2012 028 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

I guess because we were on the edge of the Savannah they don't consider it "savannah view" but yet we had an excellent view of the savannah! Before this trip I couldn't imagine why anyone would pay extra (either with points or money) for savannah view. There's lots of public areas off the lobby to view the animals and there's a lookout on the savannah as well. And who spends time in their room looking at animals? Well, apparently we do! If I was in the room I was on my balcony looking at animals and taking pictures. I would wake up early just to see what the animals were "up to"! So yeah, if you like viewing animals - savannah view is totally worth it!
After I dragged myself away from the balcony I started unpacking and getting the kids ready for breakfast. We took the lovely walk over to Jambo House and had breakfast at the Mara.

She was very insistant that Mickey Ears must be worn to breakfast...

I'm in! Loving it so far!

Thank you!

That's a GREAT standard view room! I'd like one like that when we stay @ AKL someday!
Your 2010 trip report is also wonderful! The picture w/ Bolt is terrific! I have never seen BOLT in the parks before! Also- same for MULAN! Wow!:)

I agree, I'm wondering if you can request that type of "standard" view. I'm bringing my family down in Sept. (parents and brother and sister-in-law) and I would love to have a view of the animals for them. Bolt was very random on that particular day but we've seen Mulan lots. She's actually been our favorite Princess to meet.
Thanks for reading!

Sarah! OMG! Lovin it, woman! Lookit how big Anna & Aidan are getting! Can I just say that I love that Anna has to have her LaLa's along? You know me n my dolly love. LOL! And Aidan is really getting tall. Just you wait until he's bigger than you. Eep!

I know I've made no bones about being in no hurry to go back to WDW but I swear reading your report and seeing you & Pete could tempt me back. And during F&G! I think that's when Epcot really is at its finest. I miss you guys!

I know I owe you a major email. We're smack dab in the middle of the big move (moving truck is outside as I type) so it'll be forthcoming. Promise. Thank goodness for a restless night and my iPhone. I might not have seen your report! Hoping the getaway later in the month went off as awesome as it sounded. I was so tempted to crash that party! Lol!

And what is it with kids & Japan??? Both my boys went thru a "thing" for all things Japanese. Brian still says he'd like to spend a few years living in Tokyo someday. Whaaaa?!?! But when I gave them their choice of foreign language they chose German. I thought for sure they'd jump on Japanese. Lol!

I wish I'd known your kids dig Pokemon! When packing Brian's room we came across a ton of random Pokemon cards. He doesn't collect them. He does Yugi Oh. So he gave a bunch to his friend across the street. If Aiden would want any I can tell him to set aside anymore he finds. Lemme know!

I'll try to catch more of your report in the days to come. I have a feeling the next few days I'll be falling into bed each night already asleep. I'll try to keep up. I know, I'm terrible at this stuff nowadays!

Tell Pete we said "hey!"

I know you're moving girl and I feel for ya! I've moved more times than I can count and I know the stress and hassle! Don't worry about emailing me, I'm glad you checked in here, though.

So what else would I have to type to convince you guys to come back to WDW? At the rate you're going we'll have to meet you on a cruise or over in DL. We miss you guys too and Pete keeps asking when are you guys going again.

The kids are very much into Pokemon these days (Aidan moreso than Anna)!

I'll have to email you and tell you all about my getaway. You so could have crashed the party and I would have been ok with it!
We'll talk soon...

Mindy's actually not a fan of zebra domes. Not bland enough. Once she sets her mind on something, that's it.

OMG! If a hornet flew in Josie's mouth that would be the end! The other day, she had a panic attack because she saw a "daddy longlegger" and thought it was a spider. Words can not convey the hysterics. I told her to never, ever do that again unless she was missing a limb. Poor Anna. You didn't mention her getting stung so I assume it was just a scare.

Funny about the pop. Josie won't drink it. She likes the uncarbonated orange drink at Club Cool but won't drink soda at all. When Kara was an infant, she had a babysitter. This babysitter watched her until she was about 18 months. And she was great in most ways. But she used to let her drink pop against our wishes. We knew, because Kara started asking for it at home. Now, Kara will ask for it any time she sees it. But we don't let her have much.

Of course, Mindy is a Coke fiend. Some days, she doesn't drink a drop of water. So, Kara gets more pop than I would like.

Oh well lebeau, I guess you're carrying around a box of cupcakes on this trip!

No, she didn't get stung (thank God)! I think the hornet was just as traumatized as Anna. And I understand the hysterics you're talking about. I've ran outside many a time expecting to see blood flying in all directions... but it's just an ant or a spider crawling on her toy!

Actually my Anna doesn't like pop either, she likes Club Cool because we let her fill up the cups for mommy or daddy. It's the boy that loves the pop! And I think it was picked up from his grandfather. What do you do with grandparents!?!

I have heard from others that the quality at GG fluctuates. But I find that to be true across property.

We tried GG for the first time in 2010 and loved it. By far, the best character interactions of any character meal we have ever experienced. Plus, Chip and Dale. Who's better than them? Mickey and Pluto. Can't beat them. Great atmosphere. Kids love that the restaurant rotates. And the food is at least as good as you'll get at any other character meal. Our one experience was a stand-out.

We wanted to revisit it this year. But we only have a half-day scheduled at Epcot and the princesses won out. But we will be back eventually.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your experience too. It's funny because you don't hear much about GG on the forums. Maybe we should hush-up and keep it a secret. You can still get in that restaurant after the other character meals are booked... or at least that's been my experience (I have it booked again for Sept.).

We love love love Garden Grille for the exact reason that is so obvious in your pictures... of any character dining experience we've ever done, you get more time with the characters there than anywhere. I think there are characters at your table more often than there are not half the time. I love that Mickey wrote "Princess" in your daughter's book... so sweet... she's adorable!

Yep, the GG is great! The most time we have had with characters at a meal has been the GG!
Thanks!

I swear I'm going to make an appointment for MYSELF at the BBB next time! Those pics are so sweet!

You wouldn't be the first adult! And I'm living the experience through my daughter. It's something I would have loved as a child. I went through a dress-up phase (as most little girls do) but I use to pretend to be Mary Poppins! :D

Oh well lebeau, I guess you're carrying around a box of cupcakes on this trip!

Believe it or not, after all that, she has let go of the cupcake thing. I think she finally realized we would be dragging kids all over the place to accomodate that request.

No, she didn't get stung (thank God)! I think the hornet was just as traumatized as Anna. And I understand the hysterics you're talking about. I've ran outside many a time expecting to see blood flying in all directions... but it's just an ant or a spider crawling on her toy!

Glad to hear it. Sting or no, that's quite an ordeal.

Actually my Anna doesn't like pop either, she likes Club Cool because we let her fill up the cups for mommy or daddy. It's the boy that loves the pop! And I think it was picked up from his grandfather. What do you do with grandparents!?!

Tell me about it!

<begin rant>

My mother-in-law is a bad influence in about 100 ways. The one that hacks me off the most is that she is addicted to scratch-off lottery tickets. She keeps buying them and letting Josie scratch them off. I keep telling her I hate the things and not to let Josie touch them because it only encorages her. She sees it as a free game and potentially free money.

I had finally started weening Josie off her addition to games of chance when my mother-in-law gave her a scracth-off that won $20. Now I can't convince her it's a sucker's deal.

<end rant>

It really is a hidden gem among character meals. I think it's easy to get because there are so many other choices in Epcot and a relatively low demand for character meals. Put it in the Magic Kingdom and it would be impossible to get.

Well as soon as she got situated in her chair I had to call daddy and Aidan back to see her. They were off poking around DTD and we promised Aidan he could make some Lego mini figures in the Lego store. Aidan was quite proud that his sister was in the window! Random people would stop and watch for a second, I even had one lady ask if she could take a picture. It's quite the advertisement for BBB! The Godmother told me she was a perfect princess. All she did was smile through the whole process.

I totally underestimated how long I would need at DTD to do the BBB and get back to the MK. We had lunch ressies coming up and we were going to be late, fashionably late! Of course, you can't take a bus straight to the MK and I can't remember where we transfered but it was a long haul back to the MK!

We had an ADR at Liberty Tree Tavern. We've only eaten here once and it was for dinner back when it use to be a character meal. I'm not sure why I put it on my list this year but I'm sure glad I did. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
While we were waiting for our food to come I took everyone's tickets and popped over to FL to see if I could pick up a FP for something. While on our little Trolley ride the park looked quite busy. And was it ever busy! The line for IASW was well into the walkway. I reported back to the restaurant and warned the family that it was busy out there. In the meantime I was going to relax and eat...
I had the New England Pot Roast and it was delish!

Disney 2012 163 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

LTT is going back on the must-do list!

Disney 2012 164 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

The kids were asking about Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom and I figured it was probably a good idea (it didn't look like we were getting on many rides). We signed up in Liberty Square (I believe there's only two spots to sign up, here and at the Fire Station). The kids did their training and we were off to FL (oh great, we get to brave the throngs of people in FL). It turned out not to be that busy at all. I had heard horror stories of long lines for SotMK but the most people I ever encountered was four or five ahead of us. Most times there were only a couple of people waiting at each portal. It was hot, a little too hot to be out in the sun but I would stand in the lines and let the kids wait in the shade for their turn. At the beginning we stayed together to play but it was becoming a little time consuming so we split up, I took one kid and Pete took the other.

Disney 2012 167 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

After playing a round with the kids, I think it's a very good addition to the Magic Kingdom. I've heard the arguments and the rants but I still give it a thumbs up. My kids really enjoyed it. Not everything has to be screens and videos but it is a nice little "attraction". I found it actually had me appreciating the MK even more. It takes you to little areas that maybe you wouldn't even see or notice if you're running from attraction to attraction. And the portals are amazingly themed, I don't think anyone can argue that aspect of it.

Well, when you get your daughter ;) make sure and book the BBB at the MK early! I was a pretty proud momma when she got picked!

Believe it or not, after all that, she has let go of the cupcake thing. I think she finally realized we would be dragging kids all over the place to accomodate that request.

Say it isn't so lebeau! I was looking forward to some cupcake drama in the next TR! ;)

You make a good point about GG, I never thought about it that way!

Really enjoying your TR so far especially all the pics:)

Thank you! I bought a new camera just before this trip, it's only a point & shoot but I'm happy with the results.

Excellent report so far! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks!

I am loving your report! Anna is beautiful! I'm glad she enjoyed the window seat, what a special memory!

It sure was special for her! Thank you!

After our spin on the tea cups I wanted to head down towards Storybook Circus just to see the new Dumbo. I fully expected it to be packed but I just wanted to show it to the kids (and see it for myself). It's wait time was only 20 mins!?! The only thing I can figure is A) Nobody knew where Dumbo was because it moved (and people don't read park maps) and B) The construction walls confused people and maybe they thought the area was still closed!?! Honestly I don't know but it was very odd for Dumbo to only be 20 mins on such a busy day in the MK. Dumbo has a 20 min. wait first thing in the morning and this was mid afternoon! Anyways, the kids wanted to wait in line.

I love the new Dumbo... yeah, it's same ole' Dumbo but she looks so much better. I think Storybook Circus is a huge improvement over ToonTown and the new Dumbo fits so well! I really enjoyed the view from the top as well. I wondered if I would miss Dumbo's old location but it's amazing seeing the new FL from that angle.
We left Storybook Circus and went on a search for something cold. Tomorrowland had the answer...
Frozen Coke!

Disney 2012 181 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

We wanted to get out of the heat for a second so we popped into the arcade (the kids choice, not mine)

Disney 2012 183 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

Air Hockey is always a good time!

Again, we went in search of a ride with the shortest wait time and the TTA seemed about the best of a bad lot (even the TTA had a line)

Disney 2012 190 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

Disney 2012 191 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

After the TTA everyone was asking to go back to Epcot. Really!?! I had hoped Anna would want to meet some Princesses or something (seeing as how she was dressed up and everything) but no she wanted to go to Epcot.

I suggested we walk the path back to Storybook Circus and take the train to the front of the park. I'm glad this path stayed, you feel a little removed from the hustle and bustle when you're on it (and it's a great view if a train passes by).

Disney 2012 194 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

Disney 2012 195 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

Even the train station was busy, I think we waited for two trains before we got on! (I love the new train station too, well done!)

On the way out I noticed this attraction poster. I come to find out a day later that they had the unveiling of Orange Bird that morning! We knew nothing about it because we didn't go over to Adventureland.

Disney 2012 227 by NewfieFan, on Flickr

I've never seen the show. I think poppy took the kids many moons ago and he didn't have that much to say about it. I was curious and the kids were game so we went in. The kids sat up in the front with all the other little kiddies and the hubs and I found ourselves a seat in the back. Well, what a hoot! Multiple times Peter and I were laughing out loud. Whoever was "Crush" that day was totallllly sweet (sorry, some Crush humor). He was so quick with the jokes. He interviewed one little kid who got a little stage fright it seemed and his mom ended up answering the questions for him. Finally Crush wanted to meet the mom and asked her name. It was Michelle. So Crush said, "Michelle, meet my shell!" (and he turned around to show his shell). Peter and I cracked up!!! Then he said, "Do you know how long I waited to make that joke?" "It was totalllly worth it!" Peter and I almost had tears running down our face at this point. Oh Crush, you've made a couple of new fans!

We let the kids play around for a little while in Bruce's Sub House after the show...

Garden Grocer sure is convenient for those of us that don't rent a vehicle!

Thanks! You know, every trip I find something whether it be a small or big attraction that we haven't done or experienced before. Bambi's Butterfly Garden is only during the F&G festival but if you plan on traveling during that time be sure to check it out. You have to kind of stop and take your time to really see anything. If you just walk right through the place you'll miss the butterflies. If you stand really still they'll even land on you, it's pretty cool!

I love your pics of the Flower and Garden festivals! That is always one of my favorite times of year down at the world. Well of the times I have been down there that is.
