True, but they will ask, at which time, you could say buzz off, but again, further heated discussions will then take place, probably with the OSCO folks standing nearby.
They can ask all they want. The guest does not need to answer anything.
Security: "You have been selected for additional security screening."
Guest: "No thank you."
Security: "Then we can not admit you to the park today."
At the point the only option for the guest is to turn around and leave. That is the extent of the actions for both sides.

I have a feeling that if you decline further screening, you'll just give them a reason to think that you are hiding something. If they have reason to believe that you are going to be a danger to yourself and/or those around you, then they'll probably just detain you anyways. In the end, you'll have gone through more trouble than just walking through a metal detector. I believe the conversation would look more like this:
Security: "You have been selected for additional security screening."
Guest: "No thank you."
Security: "Sir/Ma'am, please step to the side and wait for a member of security to 'assist' you."

Except that Disney security has no real authority to detain you if you have done nothing wrong. Until you actually try to walk through the entrance with a weapon you have done nothing wrong. Even then you are only guilty of a misdemeanor trespassing violation. Disney could not hold you if they wanted to. There is a slight chance that OCSO will stop you, but even they would be skirting the edge of their authority and not likely to go after someone walking away before actually doing something.

But therein lies the problem. They have no right to detain you when you choose to just leave. A cop can not detain you unless there is reasonable suspension that a crime has been committed. Refusing to walk through a medal detector is not a crime. And these people are not even cops, they are citizens wearing a shirt that says security.

I don't see the big deal. I've been keeping up with this thread and honestly if they ask you to walk through then just walk through. It takes less than two minute and who cares if anybody is looking at you. They didn't pay for my vacation, I'm not concerned what they think.

Isn't the whole point of these checks to get those with malicious plans to stop and turn around?
Well yes, I think the whole point of the criticism of doing this in a random fashion is that it doesn't create that deterrent. If I were looking to do something violent in a park and bring a gun in. I would simply hide it under my clothes. If I got "selected" I would simply decline and come back again. There's absolutely nothing Disney or OCSD can do at that point.

In an unrelated note, I went to Universal today and went through their security check for the first time since this started. At the time I went through the metal detectors were optional, I opted not to go through. I was kind of surprised though at how many people were opting to go through them.

So you could opt out? What happens then, you just head on in unchecked or was there some other method of screening?

Regarding the "sampling" they may have a pre set number every day to draw people from the crowd. Every 23rd person goes through the magnetometer and tomorrow it is every 7th. We don't know yet. As far as refusing the mag, they cannot legally do anything to you if you have not started the screening process. If you turn and walk away, OCSO can only ask to talk to you. That is called a contact. Any citizen has the right to walk away from a contact. Now, if you already start the process and then decide to leave, the level of suspicion is raised and the police may now initiate a "stop". You cannot just leave at that point. I am basing this off of how things are done here in the Nation's Capital.
If Disney security asks to speak with you after you decline the further screening, but have yet to submit to further screening, by all means, walk away. And I don't know if the other poster was being sarcastic or not as the sarcasm font was not turned on, but if your band wasn't scanned, they cannot flag you. Have a great day!!

Weird policy. One part says you cannot have anything that resembles a weapon or could be mistaken for a weapon. Yet another part says toy swords are acceptable. So, swords are not weapons?

Costumes may not contain any weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.
(emphasis mine)

So I gueeessssss you'd be OK with a lightsaber since it could not be mistaken for an actual weapon. But don't bring Chewie's bowcaster or Han's blaster. :cautious:

I think I'll have to have my hubs pack a change of clothes for me for after the DarkSide 5K. Not sure I will be admitted to the parks in my Boba Fett tank dress.

I know they posted the text of the email sent out for the marathon, here is the text of the email I received for the Star Wars half in Disneyland next weekend. Gets a little more specific for the theme of the race.

Yes, this. I have no problem with going through the medal detectors. It's just that if this is going to be the new policy, then it should apply to all or none. Don't half a__ it, that just creates a security hole and subjects themselves to racial profiling claims.

We have created this world in which we live and as a result we need to give up a few things in order to stay safe and secure. If that means the government reads all of our emails and I don't die in a bomb blast, then fine. I hear people say as a counter to this argument that they will keep themselves safe.
Na, I'd counter with this. Both Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. were on the FBI/CIA watch list during their lives. If they were alive today and the government was permitted to read their email, then they could be labeled as terrorists and their causes stopped before they gained momentum. As a result we would still be living with the segregation of the 1960's.

It doesn't matter how many people go through the detectors. They are themselves ineffective and a security hole.
