News New security measures

Has there ever been a major incident at a Disney Park (here or abroad)?

There was recently a Disney Dish podcast that talked about security and things that have happened in the past. Mr. Hill tends to dramatize things a little, but it was an interesting thing to listen to if you have the time.

So, you tell me.

Did the security CM have a secret pair of dice he was using to roll a random number, that "Selected" me? I sure didn't see it, when he pointed how was that selection made? Can you show me the method in which he was directed by to point at me? Or did he "Mentally Sample" me because I looked like the type who needed sampling?

Perhaps you see nothing wrong with being pointed at and "Sampled" but I for one, see everything wrong with it! The CM didn't "sample" me, he CHOSE me by pointing at me and saying "You've been randomly selected please step over there." I believe he said that because of my looks, there was nothing "random" about it. It's not much further to jump to assume I could easily say I was discriminated against and "sampled" because of my color / race / orientation / gender.
I have randomly screened people (not for security) and I was told to select a random number, then change the number, and continue changing it, so no pattern is established. So I might have pulled aside every 5th team X5, then switched to every 7th X3, etc. Sometimes, it is a set pattern, ie, every 10th person will be checked.

You may have been profiled, or you might have been the right number.

It's probably only a matter of time before someone does some sort of investigative story with hidden cameras and takes in a variety of people of different ethnicities and backgrounds to see what happens. A story like that makes good money and you can bet someone besides me has thought of it already. I think Dinsey had better hope it's random, I don't think it is. I think they probably instructed the employees just go over and randomly pick someone every so often.

Ahh, therein lies the problem... it's up to the person doing the "selecting" to ensure they are "random" and not fudging the numbers.. and since we are all humain well... I think you know what I'm saying. But like what S8Filim40 suggests, a hidden cameras and taking a bunch of people with different backgrounds makes for good publicity and good money.... and a good lawyer smells that money too.

I guess some people just look to be offended....

You should listen to yourself. Being upset that you got picked to be screened... do you realize how insecure that makes you sound?

Oh what, I should have thrown a party and hugged the CM, and thanked him for validating that I'm "special" today?
I'll try that next time, let you know how it goes.

I have heard very similar sentiments to what you described. I think anytime you pull a select few aside for a security matter it makes some people wonder why and certainly can make those involved feel as though people are looking at them that way. Couple that with the fact that this is new and everyone is interested in knowing what they're doing I think it's safe to say people are watching this and in turn those who are selected.

imagine the hardship these customers go through when someone asks them for ID with their credit card... just think of how many vacations have been ruined by CM asking for ID, or clarification on things. I'm amazed Disney is still in business... handling so many snowflakes is tough work.

I would say if someone breaks down and starts crying or something I would agree with you. If someone is merly recognizing that they've been singled out and is slightly uncomfortable I can understand that.

Well just because they picked her doesn't mean they aren't racially profiling.

true true....
Nor would it prove they are though. All these arguments just go to show how hard it would be to prove any profiling is taking place. The few folks I saw selected looked, with my highly untrained eye, to appear little similar to one another. Short, tall, fat, skinny, white, purple, blue, like a Star Trek DS9 scene.

Yeah I don't think anyone is nescesarily going to win any lawsuits. I'm just imagining the news story.

Reporter: and how many times did you go through the entrance?
Interviewee: 5 times
Reporter: and how many times were you selected for screening?
Interviewee: every time
Reporter: every time!?
Interviewee: yes

I'm sure that's one great subject the Disney lawyers were looking at and pushed hard for a 3rd party to run the screening. Yes, the media would try to spin it to being Disney, but TWDC is shielded from any direct lawsuit and would just spend a few bucks to spin it to be very clear it was CSC that selected folks for screening.

Yeah either way it's not good for them. Blaming CSC would only indicate that they allowed another company to discriminate against their guests.

Until someone actually does get selected every time they try to enter a park, then I'm not sure a racial profile conclusion can be drawn. As for feeling like people are looking at you a certain way, I agree that since it is a new system, everyone is going to stare. Perhaps people are staring because they want to know what kind of screening is happening? As my mother always says: Not everything is about you. :angelic: Once this becomes old news, it'll be about as fascinating as someone getting randomly selected by TSA.
