New nighttime show 'Rivers of Light' confirmed to be coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom

It' aint rocket science, GPS controlled barges and other specialized waterborne robots are fairly commonplace.

My thoughts exactly. In a world where people wear a computer on their wrist or carry one in their pocket or where cars drive themselves. GPS controlled rafts somehow do not seem all that impressive. Then again I am no techie just an average joe who will need a bit more to be impressed than a couple of rafts that move on their own like a remote control plane. The days of Disney being "revolutionary" are gone in my opinion.

Going to Animal kingdom for my first time in february so hopefully by that time ROL is up and running, i've been waiting to visit animal kingdom till all the night time attractions where all opened, hopefully i can get a fastpass or get into it by standby since that's usually a slow time during that time. :p
I think you'll be fine.

I've yet to see it. Examples?
Not exactly what they were referring to, however, if something like this was developed over 5 years ago and could keep a small fishing craft within a 5 foot range, I'd have to think WDI could have something even better available to them today. But who knows, maybe the steering and control of the rafts is not what's keeping this show from running.

On the scale Disney is doing it and with many robots? I don't know.

Maybe you should offer them your expertise.

No need, Lots of prior art and university projects on similar systems but as in many US corporations 'Not Invented Here' seems to be in play.

And these are SAILBOATS for crying out loud.

For a production boat Yamaha makes a autonomous GPS guided boat which can be purchased 'off the shelf'

Like I said it's NOT rocket science any more.

What is different here (that you probably have experience in, given that you do know everything) is the involvement of show control systems. Everything must work together, and must work the same, every time.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
I was adding things to my itinerary for my Sept 5-13 trip, and Jungle Book has no times available. Think ROL will be up and running by then?
I'm in the same boat. Kind of hard to plan a DAK night for 9/11, when the park is open until 8:00, but I cannot FP a night time safari or RoL/Jungle Book.

This also renders my ADR for dinner at Boma useless. Do I switch to Tusker House? Do I say to heck with it, make this a DAK day and go to Disney Springs for dinner instead? Ugh!

Not cool TDO - you make us plan every second of our trip, 180 days out, but don't provide vital info at the 60 day mark for something that dictates how we will spend the whole day.

I was in the same boat for our DHS night. We just got the fireworks schedule last week!:mad::mad:

If you have done any robotics work or industrial automation work that's a given its not even hard to do there are whole off the shelf libraries to handle those issues.

I can't help it if the average Disney fans technical skillset is limited to installing apps on their smartphone.

Even though show control and industrial automation (and I have done a bit of both) have technological similarities they are designed for two very different industries. I doubt you will find a theatrical show control system that can interface to a GPS navigation system, or an industrial control system that can coordinate music and video.
