It is all about the Market my store was in the Freehold Raceway mall which is trending towards upscale. The area near it is very upscale.

As far as Florida goes if you live within 200 miles of WDW I wouldn't hold your breath on one opening anytime soon

I'm 230 Miles away...

It would do well down here, though, TDS is always packed here.

At first it will be a handfull of stores in Cali, Chicago, Long Island, Times Square, and lol my store Freehold NJ.

Yes the upkeep conserns me but these stores will be smaller so you never know.

Woo hoo! So glad to hear the one in Freehold will be re-opening. I remember a few Christmas's ago when they were closing, they put a slip into my bag saying that the store would be moving, and re-opening after the holiday, but then it didn't. I agree that the mall is making a move toward more upscale shopping, and hopefully this type of store will be considered "upscale". Do you know where in the mall it will be opening, and when?

If it is profitable it will!!!!

One sad note is the new Adult clothing line just got the AXE and there will not be a return to collectables.

I'm on a roller coaster---first I was excited that the store is coming back to Freehold, but if there's no Adult clothing or collectables, why would I go in?

My town has a very up-scale section too. But only one Disney store remains- does this mean only that will will get redone (they are working with what they got) or are they exploring new locations?

How close is Naples to WDW through because the whole idea is to bring a park experience to TDS. If it is to close to WDW I doubt it will bw coming.

That sad note is a sad one indeed. The adult clothing and collectibles (including watches, ties, and books) were what made the ORIGINAL Disney Stores product line distinctive from the children's section of WallyWorld....

Agreed they need to re think this a little bit.

This sounds like a very interesting idea. It is really annoying that there won't be any Adult stuff. They should talk a walk over to hot topic and notice how disney stuff flys off the shelves over there. I personally would love to see if they made a chain of stores that was nothing but adult clothing and stuff like the Collectables. I know that I would go bankrupt if they made a store like this and actually did it right lol

The Disney Store in my area closes 02/20. I'm not holding my breath for a replacement.

We actually went into the Disney Store this past weekend. Everything was marked down 25% for the closing sale. There STILL wasn't anything worth buying. And it's not like the good stuff had been liquidated already. The shelves were full.

wasn't that what "tren-D" at Downtown Disney was all about originally?

Anyone else find it kind of odd that some pretty basic remote lighting and effects are being controlled by a $500 iPad? That seems like some amazing overkill, and a tremendous waste of money.

Agreed. I heard about this a few months ago. The iPads are expected to also be used as portable payment stations... I guess they'll have some form of credit card attachment.

As for i-Pads, don't forget that Steve Jobs, since the acquisition of Pixar, is one of the largest Disney stockholders, and (I think) a board member... So, it is natural cross-promotion for him...

Im confuses. What are collectables? And if there are no collectables does that mean the new stores will not have stuffed animals, small plushes, pins, or park merchandise?

So basically its now gonna be a babies-r-us with a few bells and whistles?

Slowjack, I do believe I worked with you at The Disney Store at The Riverchase Galleria in 1992 (you may not remember me--I was a high school kid and did not last long). I emailed you, but I'm not sure if it went through.

The new stores don't sound exciting to me at all.

LEDs?!?? WOO-HOO!!! You don't see them anywhere/everywhere in 2010! And the same freaking characters in the mirrors that you'll be seeing at WDW and DL resort rooms and parks soon?

Wow.

Seriously, if this is the direction Disney believes will save the chain, I think they should just shut them all down.

I agree. From what I heard before, the new stores were supposed to be like theme park style experiences, not just some LEDs. And no more clothes for adults? Didn't Walt Disney say once that if you just aim for kids, your dead? That seems to be what they're doing... oh yeah and they also aim for 'tweens.' Hoorah.

I remember when I worked at our TDS in Massachusetts back in 2003-ish, the store was doing so well (per square footage, etc.) that they were talking about opening Disney "specialty" stores. For example, a Gap went out of business (or moved locations or something like that) and TDS was going to open a "Home Disney Store" in that location. Unfortunately, it never came to pass.

I agree that there needs to be more / better Adult and collectible stuff. I remember the Natick Mass. Disney Gallery which was AWESOME! Alas, that's long gone -- now it's a Conainer Store.

I have a 7 year old daughter but she is never interested in going into TDS store anymore. "Too much little kid stuff" she said. Out of the mouths of babes; Disney should listen.

Agreed they need to re think this a little bit.

This is something they thought and rethought many times already. They just have not had any luck with adult product lines at the Disney Stores. As fans and/or collectors we tend to forget that the average Disney guest does not go into a Disney Store for the same reason and there's something about being in a Disney theme park or resort that makes a Disney t-shirt appealing as opposed to just being down the street from your home.

Who gives a damn about iPads? Seriously ... other than the Sheriff who sez they're way kewl and he's so happy Willow gave him one.

I'm hesitant to make a feminine hygiene product joke here (although I'm sure SNL will), but (like talking the fanboi lingo) is this? A BIG iPhone? Why is this special? Why should I (or anyone over the age of 25 who isn't a geek) care?

And how is this going to transform The Disney Stores beyond the crap shops they have devolved into?

Yeah, he did say that. I believe they even have posted that on construction walls or tees. They just don't believe it or follow it. Walt is some guy that's been dead longer than our space program.

When I hear fanbois talking about LEDs I wanna scream ... or spank them (and not in the fun way). They are lights. There's nothing special about them. Newfangled, perhaps. But I didn't drool over fiber optics, so I don't get this who techie, geekie deal.

Back to the Stores, though, I have heard nothing that makes me feel they have a real future.

Mixing the Apple Store with princesses and plush really doesn't seem to be smart retailing.

Ah, it wouldn't a legitimate thread without '74 popping in to take a giant dump on everyone. Marvelous!

Since you've never actually experienced the store, don't you think it's a bit, shall we say, premature to share your hysterical spasms? I realize you fancy yourself something of a "fanboi enthusiasm limiter", which is undoubtedly a noble calling for someone whom I surmise has a grudge, unlimited time, and a tricked out golf cart with which to chase 80 year old tail at the retirement community, but it all seems to speak to your innate and all consuming need to (A) be noticed and (B) be a wang.

To be fair, I indulge in both A and B myself. Enthusiastically and often. But here? It strikes me that most people interested enough in Disney to visit these boards, let alone post on them, are over enthusiastic optimists to begin with. Do you think that they can somehow be reformed by your flyby curmudgeony offal? Do you take it upon yourself to drop by the local crack den and exhort those firing up that "this crack used to be way better - and that new pipe doesn't add anything to the experience"?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course. And I'll defer to your vast experience in retail as to whether the dribs and drabs we've heard of this highfalutin concept will have any effect whatsoever on improving sales and the customer experience (which will undoubtedly improve simply by the narrowing of the store pool and the dropkicking of The Children's Place). But it would be refreshing if you thought more and posted less on occasion.
