New Imagination Park Disney Stores to use tech from the parks!

Dan, I remember you quite well, actually. You and I even interviewed together, if you remember (this is Anton, in case you weren't 100% sure). Your avatar would have reminded me anyway, although you didn't have a monkey and parrot on your shoulders back then.

No, I didn't get the e-mail -- turns out I hadn't updated the address in my profile in some time. Just fixed that.

Hope you're doing well. BTW, I've heard there may be a reunion of sorts before our store closes. I can pass along the details when I get them if you're interested.

Hello! Yes, I knew it was you, and I remember that interview! I sent you another message, too.

Feel free to visit my blog (that goes for everyone here, too!):

I'm thinking about posting some of the old Disney Store Traditions stuff that I still have. I wonder if that could get me in trouble.

And I really was hoping for so much more from you.

Ah, excellent. Excellent. The foundation has been laid.

Now, you say haven't been to a Disney park in a decade, you've stepped in a Disney Store three times in your life ... all I can think of is are you doing here then?

A fair question. Theme parks and their development and operation are a peculiar hobby of mine, and Disney has always been of particular interest. That said, my traveling interests are such that it takes time for Disney to work its way back to the top of the list of destinations. A visit every five years or so would be my ideal rotation, but we chose to start a family around the time a previous trip would have likely been made and are now waiting for our latest arrival to be of sufficient age before unleashing the magical prole-ishness of Disney upon them.

As for the Disney Store, I'm not a merchandise hound. The swag my children now demand can be purchased much easier online, although I'm fairly certain my wife has been to our local store a few times over the past few years.

Some good signs starting to come out of the merchandise.

1. The amount of Muppet items coming in has trippled.
2. We have watches that are starting to come int.
3. Atenna toppers are back.
4. We may be getting pins in.

Bad news are costumes are being changed to Kaki pants and blue plade shirts we are going to look like farmers or lumberjacks.

Sounds like some good stuff coming into the stores there, Farmer John (sorry, couldn't resist). :)

There is no such thing as a 'special' iPad. You're saying Apple is going to compile a seperate OS version just for the Disney Stores? Not happening.

And you could still sniff the packets and have your way with the effects.

Like I said, they could have a special APP distributed Ad-Hoc, but I'll give that two weeks once these stores open before the App is available in Cydia (applications for jailbroken iPhones/iPod Touches/iPads) and once that happens, you can forget the effects, because they will need to be turned off since anyone with a device can come in and play with them.

1st of all, Apple does not support Jailbreaking their products. That means what you're saying wouldn't even work. DS is not going to download blackra1n or w/e and JB all their iPads. While I see what you're saying, a simple password could stop just anyone from playing with the controls...tho I really can't see the DS using Cydia...

I remember when the disney store was an experience (10-15years ago) I used to love going there. I loved it because there was something for everyone there, and they had so much more than what the DS carries these days. I used to like the little section where the books/CD's were, and the little collectible figurine area. Heck, before the last DS around used closed, I couldn't find one single thing in there for me. not even a mug. even the little keychains were cheap/lame.

Are you actually suggesting that Apple would refuse a request from Disney to provide them with, effectively, an "industrial application proprietary iPad", to be used as a retail kiosk? Even if Disney was willing to pay an exorbitant amount for such a thing? Or that Apple wouldn't offer it at a reasonable or reduced fee in order to provide a high profile entry of their new device as an example of how it can be tailored into specific commercial uses?

I'm not suggesting this will actually happen, but it's entirely feasible. Dismissing it out of hand is silly.

To be the cynical one, sounds like a huge waste of money. Sure, people will go, but will they open up their pocketbooks? Something has to change in the quality of the products.

If they spend a fortune on staffing and updating the store, but still are discounting the same cruddy quality $20 dolls to $11.99, is the $$$ spent a waste?

We use to have a $50 Disney store budget every month. It is difficult for us to spend more than $150 a year there now. Most is for Christmas. A few neat lights and an AA will encourage me to spend about as much as I do at DTD, $0.00.

What is the benefit? Keep the stores from looking like discount shops and create high quality Disney merchandise. Bring in more from the web site. Not more $12 coffee mugs discounted to $4.99.

Easily an answer. The only problem is making sure the casing is the same stuff used on the exterior of the space shuttle.
