Mustard or Ketchup on a hot dog?

I don't like nasty giant grilled (ewwww) hot dogs from hot dog stands or wherever people buy them.

These are the only things I eat:

I microwave them because grilling is disgusting. And I cover them in ketchup.

Practically every one of these otherwise decent suggestions has been ruined by the presence of onions. ("Hey, here's some great food, let's add something with a revolting aftertaste that doesn't go away and gives you horrible breath. And as a bonus, that taste will infect all the other adjacent ingredients, so even if you take them off, you'll still know they were there!") I'll never understand why we insist on pretending these things are real food. My theory is nobody wants to be the first to admit how awul they are.

THANK YOU. I can stand them minced into tiny pieces and mixed in with a meal, but not in big odorous chunks.

My mom made my hot dogs with ketchup and melted cheese when I was a little girl, so that's always been how I've eaten them. Nowadays I tend to skip the cheese and just do ketchup. Never been a fan of mustard.

Onions are fantastic, cooked or not cooked, they bring a distinct flavor to enhance anything they are served with, like hot dogs for instance. Sauteed onions and mushrooms on a steak is mandatory.

As for the after effects to one's breath, a little mouthwash is all you need.

I love cooked onions. I just eat them in bowl by themselves. But onions and mushrooms on a steak or by themselves, yum. We had hot dogs tonight with chili. the following items were on the table for who wanted what combination: jalapenos, mustard, onions, sweet relish, cheese. I'm going to have to try cooked onions on a hot dog. Never thought of that.

Try sauteed onions on a hot dog, or even better, chop the onion in half and put it on a grill until soft. A little salt, pepper, worcestershire and soy sauce, very, very yummy!!!

Stewed horse droppings garnished with gangrenous toenail clippings would also provide a "distinct flavor" to any dish, but I'm not lining up for the grand opening of that particular hot dog cart. :lookaroun

I am all about the chili cheese dog.

When I'm at home it has to be an all beef frank with ketchup. I don't get mixed up with onions....we are definitely not friends. The funny thing is, my husband eats nothing but mustard and onions on his dogs.

I grew up always putting ketchup and sometimes mustard on mine...am I some sort of freak?

No way. I'm 23 years old and I adore hot dogs. I don't care to hear the stories of what terrible quality meat they are...because that terrible quality meat is DELICIOUS. When I was young it was tons of ketchup. Now it's tons of ketchup and a little bit of mustard. Yum. I also like to add a slice of American cheese sometimes. But that's it. No onions, relish, sour kraut...nothing. Ketchup is amazing on almost any food and I love it. Yum! :slurp:

Gasp! Ketchup? Really? Oh my.

Here is a proper way to have a hot dog. This is New England Style, though really mostly Connecticut.

Hot dog itself is deep friend, then turned on the grill until crisp. Spicy brown mustard, relish, sauerkraut and bacon. Martha Stewart even agrees!

Here is another proper hot dog. This is New York Style.

This hot dogs are grilled (never boiled! only tourists eat dirty water dogs!) and served with spicy mustard, sauteed "NY Onions" no other way to describe them, and of course, sauerkraut. It is served with a cold whipped papaya concoction of a drink. yum

Now I'm hungry!:D

My family has to have ketchup...and not just any ketchup, Hienz ketchup.

My personal fav for a hot dog is, in this order: ketchup, mustard, onions, chili, sauerkraut. Now I am hungry.
