Mustard or Ketchup on a hot dog?

Recently I attended a barbecue and one of the things they had on the grill was hot dogs. Now normally I don't tend to eat hot dogs any more, but they were Vienna hot dogs, and I used to love that brand, so I ate a couple.

But...

As I was building my normal hot dog Chicago style, the ONLY way to eat them, I saw people, grown adults just drowning their hot dogs in ketchup. Now, I grew up in Chicago, and in Chicago we never put ketchup on our hot dogs. If you go to Wrigley Field to watch the Cubbies, the hot dogs come pre-loaded with mustard on them.

Ketchup on a hot dog, is this the new black, or was this just a sad misunderstanding?

I don't mind ketchup on mine...along with relish, mustard and some onions. But they have to work together with no one condiment dominating the dog. The perfect amount of each is the key to a good hot dog! :p

NICE...now I'm in the mood for a hot dog at 11pm! :slurp::lol:

I only put mustard never ketchup. My kids put mayonaise. I don't know where they got that from, but it wasn't me. Yuck!!! I have recently had the Chicago dog. It was interesting.

I think the mustard thing must be a US thing, it wouldn't be the usual thing in the UK. In my experience, ketchup would be much more common here. Ketchup and fried onions is my preferred method.

ketchup is the norm in the UK, I personally have ketchup and mustard at the same time after seeing it done this way in the US.:slurp:

Ketchup and raw onions on a hot dog or frankfurter is my only way. But if it is a wiener, which is New York System style, then mustard, onions, burger meat sauce and celery salt is the standard topping.

Chicago dog- Mustard, onions, cucumber, celery salt, poppy seed bun and a whole pickle spear tucked into the bun opening. Perfection.

Milwaukee dog- Mustard, onions and sauerkraut. Not a Chicago dog, but great when you can't get one.

Jimmy Thick-Only use Vienna hot dogs!!!

It is a paste of chili peppers, distilled vinegar, garlic, sugar and salt.

that sounds very spicy
Actually, it's not bad. I only put a small amount on to give it kick.

Practically every one of these otherwise decent suggestions has been ruined by the presence of onions. ("Hey, here's some great food, let's add something with a revolting aftertaste that doesn't go away and gives you horrible breath. And as a bonus, that taste will infect all the other adjacent ingredients, so even if you take them off, you'll still know they were there!") I'll never understand why we insist on pretending these things are real food. My theory is nobody wants to be the first to admit how awul they are. :shrug:
