I have a question for the rest of the mullet hunters. (btw, saw one this morning, going into a doctor's office)

Does a former mullet still count? By that I mean, a guy who used to have short hair in front, but is going bald on top, with a receding hairline?

That's what we like to call the "Solar Panel Mullet" (reflects and absorbs the sun at the same time  )

Good Question! I think the same thing every time I see the guy at my gym who has long hair on the sides but is completely bald on top. I'm thinking it's not a mullet, because there is no short hair. All hair is at least 10" long.

Sort of like Riff-Raff from the Rocky Horror Picture Show:

No, this is different than the geezers (anyone my age or older) who are balding so let the back hair grow long ...ala Gallagher and the dad on Dharma and Greg...this person still has SOME short hair on top, it's just very thin...kind of like a little oval buzz cut. He's always had a mullet (at least for as long as he's been working for me) it's just starting to "morph."

I think that qualifies clearly as a mullet. Once he loses it, we get into an interesting philosophical question along the lines of: "If a tree falls and there's no one to hear it, does it make a sound?"

If he has no hair on top, is the hair on top short or long? Can we say "once a mullet always a mullet", or should we give him the opportunity to redeem himself? Can he truly redeem himself if he can't grow hair on the top, or does he become like the sinner who dies before he has a chance to repent? If he has one hair left, and allows that to grow to the length of the rest, has he ended his mulletness?

Very difficult questions.
