Yeah, disney is doing NEEDED restructuring. After all of this, a better Disney will emerge.
Layoffs happen. Jobs come and go. If you take the total number of WDW employees..compared to the what? 450 or so layoffs....It really aint too bad.
WDW i think has around what...60-65k employees?
That is less than 1% of the workforce....So, really..not too bad.
It seems that WDW was management top heavy, alot of the 450 or so were middle management.

see EXISTING thread

Last week was a TOUGH week @ WDW, a combination CM managers & non-managers thru out the park is a BIG deal IMO for the numbers & swiftness of the cuts. What this does to overall CM park morale can not be underestimated! Duckberg :(

CM morale is terrible from what I've heard. Plenty of my friends have expressed out right fear for themselves and their friends.

7/10 of 1% of WDW employees. All in some form of management. WDW is very manager heavy. Guest won't know the difference.

Yep, VERY top heavy.
I dont think the customer will know abit of difference....which is GOOD!
Except that it may get better!

Except a lot of these positions from the way I understand aren't top heavy. Most of these 450 aren't executives or VPs or directors that have little contact with day to day operating CMs.

They are mid-low level managers that have direct impact with guest interaction CMs.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this.

If I'm right, guests are going to notice.

Time will tell...im hoping that this will make for big improvements.
Actually, even not taking the economy in to consideration, alot of these cuts needed to happen.

Somehow it seems Disney has already lost some of the magic through this when I'm at MK yesterday and overhear 2 CMs talking about people who got laid off and one says to the other "He's been here 20 F&#*ing years. . ."

First off - I don't like to see anybody that is performing up to par loosing their job.

However, from what I have seen, the line management to hourly CM ratio is pretty high. Meaning that you have a management person for every 6 or 7 houry people working. This is what I have heard through numerous sources - so please correct me if I am wrong.

That is an awfull amount of Managers for a situation where you are just supervising workers. In creative areas or project management type areas that is an OK number, but not when all you are doing is making sure people follow procedures.

I used to be a Field Supervisor "back in the day". My crew consisted of 16 to 19 people and operated over 5 townships. Quite a lot more supervision than 8 people in a Fry Cart.

Yea that's close. It's kind of rediculous how many managers we have in the parks. That being said, I don't want to see most of them lose their jobs.

Really?

Where are you getting your info to base that very incorrect assumption?

These people who are losing their jobs largely DIRECTLY affect guest experiences.

It's amazing what people believe ...

You know folks that work there..i know folks that work there.
Its common knowledge that the place is top heavy.
And no, i dont think that a guest would notice one bit of difference.
Disagree if you may, no big deal.
The cuts were needed and WAS going to happen despite a good or bad economy.
The "world" will go on....and we will still go and go and go........And LOVE every minute of it.

No. You aren't wrong.

The only thing I question is the 450 number being tossed around ... because Disney won't release a figure and they've been letting people go since December on a fairly regular basis that only picked up steam in the past two weeks with the second quarter ending.

I have the feeling the number is much higher if you include all of the folks who have steadily been let go ...

How many "Disney Employees Laid Off" threads that devolve into economic/political theory shout fests do we need?
