Re: Fight Back Tigger

We are so stupid these days. I coach baseball, softball, and soccer that my kids participate in and 1) I do it because the kids need the help and most parents just drop them off and leave like a free babysitting service. It is impossible to get help. 2) I am deathly afraid to touch a child, will never be with them 1 on 1 and will never give one a ride home (my wife and I have stayed for an hour and a half after a game when the kids parents forgot about her, and were out to dinner so couldn't be called.
I know what you mean. I have helped out with shows put on by a local dance school, and some of the kids will greet you or thank you with a hug. All the bad publicity and law suits does put that thought in the back of your head - "Is some fool going to point a finger at me and cry foul". Then my common sense kicks in. The dance teachers have known me for the better part of twenty years and I'll be damned if suit happy -holes are going to make me stop a child being able to display a simple act of thanks or affection.

I wish I knew the answer to this one! :brick:

I grew up in a time when the "boys will be boys" attitude prevailed, and the only defense was a slap! (however, that would get you charged with assault now:lol: )

My friend was molested by Smokey the Bear! At least I think she was, as no one talked about such things back then; I'm just putting things together as viewed from my adult perspective.

I myself have been a victim of sexual harrassment in the workplace at a time when the term didn't exist; I was not unusual. Most women of my age have their own stories.

I'm happy that those days are over.

But I'm sad that the pendulum has swung so far in the other direction that a man fears telling you your new outfit is attractive because you might yell harrassment!

I'm sad that adults fear to give a crying child a hug for fear that he/she will be viewed as a predator.

I'm sad that some parents won't let their daughters play at a friend's house because she lives with her dad, and "you never know."

I'm sad that some parents won't allow young ballet dancers to learn pas de deux because it's "too intimate."

I'm sad that in our well-intentioned efforts to protect our children, and ourselves, we've created frightening monsters around every corner, to the point that we start to lack the experience and courage to recognize and deal with the real ones.

BTW, it's interesting how some of the victims exaggerate the time involved. Apparently, many people have never had to rountinely count out a minute; it's enough time for me to get up from here, go into the next room, grind coffee, set up the coffeemaker, and sit down again. I think everyone around me might have noticed a character "cupping my " for a minute.

That doesn't mean that such things don't happen; it just means that sometimes the story can get embellished. A brush can turn into a touch can turn into a grope, escalating with each telling, especially if you have someone prodding you with his/her own agenda. "Are you SURE it was accidental? COULD it have been deliberate?" or "Are you SURE it was deliberate? COULD it have been accidental?"

I'm just reminded too much of the daycare incidents of the 80s where children were "prodded", until the embellishments escalated to the point of obvious fantasy, but not before innocent people were jailed or had their lives torn apart. Yes, there were most likely SOME incidents, but never to the extent of the claims.

It is kind of scary how quickly a lot of you are to place blame on the potential victims here.

Do any of you actually know this Tigger CM? I'm betting that there may be some who know him who may be thinking, "Yeah, I can believe it."

The reason no one comes forward is that it is hard to believe you would actually be molested by a Disney Character at Disney World. So they tell themselves that it must have just been an accident. Only after they hear of a criminal case do they start to think that maybe their experience wasn't an accident.

It is fine for you people to love all things Disney, but your reactions are bordering on cult-like.

Very scary indeed.

Yes, I do describe myself as a Disney Freak, but at the same time, I'm judging these situations from first-hand experience since I was a character greeter.

I only wish that characters would be able to chase down the guests who hurt them or touch them inappropriately. I have seen a character get kicked so hard that he had to be sent home due to his injury. I have seen characters slapped, punched and being knocked over. I have seen adults tell their children to kick the character or pull its tail or tongue. I have seen guests pick characters up in order to try to injure them. Too bad they can't do anything...

i totally forgot about the two escorts. that is so true. it'd make it very hard for a character to get away with so much as picking his nose. i also agree that the characters have more to worry about than the guests. as a former cp (fall 2003), i've heard other cp characters on the bus sharing horror stories about everything from a spoiled lil kid actually kicking pooh to a lizard getting trapped in someone's suit. one of the cons of kids thinking the characters are real is that they may treat them like an oversized stuffed animal, not realizing that a real person is under there.

Why do they always refer to character greeters as handlers! What do they think, the characters are from a zoo!?

character greeters, more often than not, are too inept for the job and end up putting too much responsibility on the capable ones

I was a greeter and I will say that MOST of the greeters are good and can handle the crowds and sitations thrown at them. I would say out of 100%, 95% were really good. I am not a dummy who just stood there, I took an active role in my job.

As in any job (characters included), there are the good and the bad.

I loved my job as a greeter and took it VERY seriously.

I must have been one of the few. I took my job seriously.

I would VOLUNTEER to work (with no pay) if I could...but since Disney has that lovely rule that you can't work at WDW and TDS at the same time (because it's a conflict of interest) I can't.

Oh well...what can you? Maybe after Mr. Eisner's out it will change!
