I didn't much care for it either.
If it weren't for Harry Potter, LotR would have never been heard of again, IMO. I also blame HP for "The Lion, the Witch, and Wardrobe" returning to film, but that was a positive thing.

Is the fact that you were on a farm in WV important and/or relevant at all? :lookaroun

Yes. It's the reason I read the books. I was bored out of my mind because I'm not a farm-type person. So I read the HP books.

Oooh, your words sting me to the core!

I don't think these movies were made because the other was. These movies were made because they were GREAT BOOKS. You could say very well the same thing with TDVC and HP. Both are very recent books that are being turned into movies.

And how can you be so sure that HP wasn't made because of LotR?

Yeah, foreign lands are pretty tough. Luckily when I stayed in Germany, my host family was very fluent and I spent every day with all the other kids from my school.

And my mom was there, so she could translate for me :lookaroun

In all honesty, from what I've seen/remembered HP and LotR share many similarities, and considering LotR came first...

Yes, but I think Michael was talking about the movies, which came out at relatively the same time.

I think I broke down when I was watching a History Channel special and they dubbed over American historians into German.

Harry Potter was made because a single mother in England desperately needed financial help and a young wizard boy popped into her head. Harry Potter films have been made to capitalize off of the success of the books. Sometimes I wonder if this was the best thing to do. I'd rather have waited till all 7 were written before filming.

I'm glad that the Narnia books are being made into movies. I'm glad that Disney found them worth adapting to film because the stories deserve it. However, I think that everyone wants a piece of the fantasy movie franchise pie, and Narnia was available for Disney.

LotR, I never heard of them before the movies/before Harry Potter, so I'm sure a fan base existed, but it wasn't on the same scale as HP/Narnia/Star Wars.

 That's pretty funny.

I didn't watch much TV when I was there, but I do remember seeing music videos where they didn't censor any of the questionable lyrics. That was weird to hear.

Oh, and we also watched the Prince or King or Duke or something of Spain get married to some TV reporter. Everyone seemed pretty stoked about that. I just sat there and pretended to be interested.

They watch barely any tv at all over there! It was terrible. :lookaroun

The LotR fanbase EXCEEDED the original Harry Potter base (original = pre-movie) by lightyears. JRR Tolkien is hailed as one of the greatest writers of all time and his books were actually made into cartoons before HP was written. The movie The Hobbit (based on the book written by Tolkien) would play on the Disney Channel when I was seven (I remember because I never wanted to watch it  ). Rowling has even admitted that her works were partially inspired by LotR - it's no coincidence they share some of the same mythological creatures. Dumbledore and Gandalf the Grey resemble each other VERY closely, as well as their relationships with main protagonist. Tolkien was also a best friend of CS Lewis - they dedicated books to each other - and his works (much like Lewis's) are deep allegories of Christianity.

LotR defiantly had a following long before HP ever came to fruition.

They have big lunches too. I had lasagna for lunch my first day over there. It was weird.

The Germans definitely have their eccentricities.

(Also, hello to everyone who kind of snuck in here under the radar: Dan, Betty, anyone I'm forgetting)

Absolutely, and there are more LotR books than just the trilogy. The Hobbit and Salmarillion are the only two I can think of now, but there are others that are about Middle-Earth and the hobbits as well.

They were indeed popular before Harry Potter came along. They were popular before JK Rowling came along...
