Just to add my $.02 to the LoTR conversation. George Lucas was also very influenced by Tolkien in writing his StarWars scripts.

I actually felt the same way about Harry Potter that I did with The Da Vinci code. I didn't want to read it because it was a trend. I didn't even want to see the movies. But then I was forced to and decided to give the books a try because the movie wasn't all that bad.

I ended up reading the first three books over the course of on week on a farm in West Virginia. I was pretty surprised at how good they were.
That was exactly how I felt about Harry Potter as well...then my best friend drug me to the movie (POA) and I fell in love with the stupid franchise!

I chuckle when Lord of the Rings is referred to as a "trend".

It's been going strong since it was first published in 1954. Not exactly trendy ;)

Hi everyone....we're home....

'Nina's (MJ's name for her) surgery went really well, the senitnel nodes they took out looked good, the tumor was large, so they had to remove a lot of tissue, not sure when we'll have th emargins back that delineate the tumor. They put a Porta-Cath in for her Chemo treatments...

My visit to the doctor was VERY frustrating...

I am not amused...he basically blew me off and said the other things I am on should be helping....he gave me a tranquilizer, nothing for the panic attacks and nothing for the bipolar....The first one was supposed to be a counseling session and he was even more of a joke, saw me for 10 minutes, said I needed a psychiatrist and then sent me back to the waiting room where we waited for 1.5 hours... It was really hard on MJ and she is acting out a bit now because of the frustration... :(

UGH!

If it weren't for Harry Potter, LotR would have never been heard of again, IMO. I also blame HP for "The Lion, the Witch, and Wardrobe" returning to film, but that was a positive thing.
Lord of the Rings was goings strong long before JK Rowling set pen to paper. It had also been made into an Animated movie in the Seventies. The path to screen of the Peter Jackson film started long before the Harry Potter project was fast tracked into production - if anything LOTR would have pushed the Harry Potter film into production.

I read them in a week while I sat on the couch feeding MJ as a newborn....
I too avoided them and was surprised by how good they were... I want to read them again, but my copy of #2 is missing, sigh....

LotR I read as a kid and avioded the movies till a year ago....they are way different and I have to think about them as separate entities to like them both...

I *still* have't managed to watch Narnia or HP 3 (we had to leave mnid movie) and HP 4.... sigh....

so...today has been just a normal day at work...when I help out this client and his pregnant girlfriend. I help them pick the pictures...he hands me his credit card...I look at it and realize that he's this famous football player for the St. Louis Rams! I was freaking out inside...but outside I was calm as a cucumber.

Hehehe...I met a football player. (Who is in fact 1 day older than me! How's that for cool
