Mission:Space update (confirmed)

And protein
I'll never forget when I did M:S opening year. Got to the area before the pre-show and heard "We had ANOTHER biological incident". 10 year old me wasn't quite sure what that meant, but had some idea. That is until the doors to the sims opened and Clorox filled the air, I knew what happened. Talk about reassurance when getting on a brand new ride. Oh and this was before the barf bags too.

Am I the only one that finds Mission: SPACE to be an underrated ride? The intimate experience often generates mocking and banter, similar to a rapid ride.
I enjoy Mission Space everytime I ride it. I love the launch sensation and feel bad for everyone that gets sick on it. I think if it hadn't of replaced Horizons it would probably be more popular around here but who knows.

All simulators seem to suffer a similar fate as many just can't handle them (or at least think they can't). It has to be why an attraction like Star Tours in a park with a handful of rides can be close to a walk on. MS also has the confined space. Fortunately none of this bothers me so I have been enjoying both orange and green since they opened, while my wife has only braved it a couple of times when I begged her.

It did nothing for me when I rode it and nothing about it made me want to go back on. I like the idea. Not saying it's a bad attraction, it isn't. Hopefully the updates make me a fan of it. It'll at least get me on again.

The only reason I won't ride it is because of my claustorphobia. It made me feel a way I've never experienced before or since then. I very nearly had an extreme panic attack. Never again.

I say that and we definitely don't do it every visit. I also do the wuss version.

I did the wuss version too. Maybe I should have done the other lol

I would say try it! I was really worried the first time I rode Orange after reading about all the effects people experience but I was completely fine. The G forces did not feel as intense as I thought and really help sell the individual sequences like the zero G and especially the launch! I would highly recommend trying it once and if you don't react well to it switch back to Green.

Agreeing with @Movielover here. Try orange. As someone with a erratic stomach, I've never had any issues with it. Worse aftereffect I've had was my legs feeling "weightless" for about 15 minutes after it. And if you're worried about getting sick, don't look away from the screens. On top of that, the forces are only for short spurts too. Maybe 10 seconds tops for each (launch, slingshot, re-entry to Mars)? I could never imagine doing the ride with out the forces. I said before, that's its' "party trick". Without those, it's a less exciting Star Tours.

EDIT: To add to all of this, I think people are scared of orange because of all the warnings and the 2 deaths. I had a friend scared of orange and when it was over, he said "That was it? The forces weren't as bad as the signs make them out to be".

Your advice to keep looking at the screen the whole time is spot on. If you turn your head at all, it ups your risk of getting sick exponentially, but simply keeping your head straight prevents most people from getting sick.

Yep! That's the reason why they mention it literally 5 times before getting on. I don't think people realize closing your eyes on a sim REALLY messes with your mind. You're moving, but you aren't, but you have forces and you're actually spinning, and the video makes you think you're actually doing something. It's a mind trick like all sims.

I've looked away to check on my friend and yes, you can instantly tell you're spinning. I've rode it enough that I know how long the hard forces parts last, but if I'm with a friend that's never been on it, I reinforce not to look away. Basically, it's a ride and don't let the warnings scare you out of it. Get sick/feel crap after it? Don't do it again. Give orange a chance, it is fun for what it is.
Orange really is the new black. Once I tried it, II couldn't go back!
Aaaahhh...the joke...I got it!

So true. People usually ignore ride warnings and often they really don't matter for the majority of the population (i.e. most people hold their arms up when riding a roller coaster even if the warning tells them to keep them in the ride vehicle at all times) but not turning your head during Mission Space is definitely one warning that everyone should pay attention to.

Edit: not that I'm a proponent of ignoring ride warnings...I'm not. I'm just saying they are often on the extremely conservative side and people get away with ignoring them all the time with little to no consequence, but for M:S it's definitely not a good idea to do so.

I think the root of the problem is the preshow. It starts off well by showing real astronaut space training and telling you that's what you'll be experiencing... but then it pivots and pretends it's real.

- "Before you decide if it's right for you, let me introduce you to your spacecraft"... Then we board a room full of pods that look nothing like that.
- "The success of your mission will depend on all of you working together as a team"... But all you're doing is hitting buttons when it tells you to (if you're still conscious) and those buttons do nothing.
- "Your trip will take three months..."

The whole thing wavers between telling you it's a simulator, then it's real, then it's a simulator, then it's real... stick with one or the other please!!!

Four more things:

- The CGI isn't incredibly convincing, and it doesn't help that the preshow video looks old.
- It's not the kind of ride that many people want to put themselves through more than once. Also, a number of first time guests are predisposed to it.
- The exterior feels like more of a facade than a building. It looks small in comparsion to it's neighbors UoE and TT. I think that plays a role in it's low popularity.
- Of course, it feels shallow in comparsion to Horizons, so many EPCOT Center fans naturally dislike it.

I agree that it's a good thrill ride, but I look at Mission: SPACE compared to the original Test Track and I see a clear winner. Mission: SPACE feels as messy and incohesive as this post. Hopefully the changes will help.

Ignoring the fact it replaced Horizons, I completely agree with these points. At least the new CGI should look way better.

Correction: it's not the kind of ride that YOU want to experience more than once. I know a family where 3/4ths ride it every chance they get...
