Mission: SPACE Question

I'm wondering about Mission: Space. I've never been on the ride before but we'll be going in June. I hear a lot of people get sick on this ride. I know that it's a centrifuge. I also know that you can choose a less intense version of the ride. I really want to go on the "intense" version but I don't want to get sick. I've been on Star Tours, Body Wars, Astro Orbiter, Twilight Zone T of T and any other ride that could cause motion sickness and done fine. However, the one ride that I can't do is Tea Cups. I don't like carnival rides like the Tilt-a-Whirl either. Does anybody think I may have to avoid MS or should I be okay. I love WDW but I don't want to spend the day hanging out by a toilet::hurl:

I consider myself to be very rugged person, someone who never gets sick on rides of any kind. However, riding Mission:Space has made me a bit uncomfortable in the past, so I currently choose the "less intense" Green version. It's basically the same sort of feeling you get from a county fair gravitron. If you look to the side or move your head around it can make you a bit queesy.

Personally, I don't feel like you lose much from the less intense version. My best advice would be to try both and see how it goes. The intense version isn't SO bad that it will hurt you to try once, unless of course you get severe motion sickness, or you are a complete wuss .

Give it a try. I dont do well on the spinning rides like teacups, but M:S wasnt an issue. Just make sure to keep your head back and your eyes on the screen and you will be fine. Your basically trying to trick your body into thinking its not spinning more or less

I've been wondering how intense the Green version is.. I seem to have a problem with G forces (the backwards part of EE made me almost sick). I would really like to try the Green Mission: Space, but would rather miss it if it's going to make me feel ill.

I think the problem I have on M:S is the fact that I'm too curious/ADD to keep my eyes on the screen the entire time. As soon as you look to the side you start to feel the spinning....

If the wait times aren't bad, try the Green Team (non-spinning, less intense) and if you still want to try the full-spinning Orange Team, go for launch! Or, launch your lunch, or nevermind, you get the idea!

I rode the Green Team twice in a row on Sunday and was a little tiny bit woozy. Once doesn't bother me a bit. You won't catch me on the Orange Team. :hurl:

Green just vibrates and moves back and forth a bit (I don't think it spins at all) and I can't imagine you will have any problem with it. Basically it gives you the same motion simulation, just without the gravitron style spinning. It's pretty close to the Orange version, just without the nausea.

If you can handle Star Tours you should be ok on M:S Green.

Great! Thanks for the info.. I am good on Star Tours! Mission: Space, here I come!:sohappy:

I'll let the engineer in me out to play with this one.....

Here is why many people have problems with M:S.....They move their head. The way M:S works is by having your inner ear aligned with the arch of the centrifuge. Your inner ear is fooled into thinking that you are moving forward.

But....

When you turn you head to look up and down or left and right you inner ear is no longer aligned with this arch and you brain thinks that you are tumbling rater violently. This will result in a protein spill from even some of the most rock solid thrill riding junkies.

The other problem people have with M:S is the sustained G-forces. M:S will pull somewhere between 1.8-1.9 G's for about 10-15 seconds. This will feel like having someone of near equal weight laying across your chest and will very slightly inhibit you breathing. For some people this unexpected mild shortness of breath will cause a panic attack.

Lastly is the claustrophobic factor to consider. You are in a very cramp small space. If this bothers you than neither side of this attraction is for you.

If you like thrill rides, can keep you head straight, are not claustrophobic and will not freak out while pulling less than 2 G's then you will be fine on M:S. Start out with the green side which has no spinning and no G forces and see what you think. If you like it and want to turn it up a notch give the orange side a whirl.

Oh just give it a try. Worst case you get sick and puke in a trashcan, best case you get the ride of your life. You really cant even tell you are "spinning".

Now, if you said, "I have a heart condition and im trying to determine if I should take the less intense side" then i would caution the wind.

Just try it. and good luck. Let us know how it was.

This is why i gave the loose answer... i knew you would smell this out and go for the technical answer.

I love it. :D

Thanks for posting this...I've always been curious but just never asked! I'm nervous about going on it too.

One question: Can anyone describe what it makes you feel like? For example, how ToT makes your stomach feel like it's back at the top of the tower (love it and can handle it!)

Thanks!

Completely different from a "drop" type feeling.

Have you ever flown in a plane? During take-off, when the plane throws the engines to forward and you sink back in your seat, then once you lift off, you feel a little downward sinking plus the backward sinking.... kind of like that, but much much more intense.

Just try it. You will be fine.

Like i said, worst case, you puke. :D

M:S is a carnival spin-ride at it's core. If you are uncomfortable with something as mellow as Tilt-a-Whirl, I'm thinking that M:S will be a bit too much for you. The g-forces can be quite strong on this ride. I have never been ill on a ride, so I can not state with any degree of authority how any given experience will affect anyone. Your own description of what you can tolerate prompts me to tell you that you should approach this ride with a degree of caution and a suitable barf bag ( Disney provides them, but they look a little small).

It will start with a very slight spinning sensation. Once the centrifuge is up to speed you will feel the G forces pressing you down into your seat. Once you go into orbit you will feel weightless (like on ToT) and will again feel a slight spinning sensation until you head to Mars then it is back to G-forces. You will be tossed around a bit while avoiding asteroids then it is back to G-forces for your decent to the Planet. After that you will get tossed around a bit while flying through a canyon followed by your landing.

Haha oh my favorite activity!

Yes, I understand the plane feeling. Thanks for the encouragement...I will definitely eventually go on it.

I have read a lot of horror stories about this, and the first time I rode recently I figured I would ride the Green first. The wife was with me and she is very sensitive to these types of things but she really enjoyed it, so did I, so we did Orange immediately after.

No sickness whatsoever. Obviously it will vary greatly from person to person, but we both really liked Orange too. You don't really get the sense that you are spinning, all you do is feel the tilt of the car and the pressure pushing you back into your seat.

Its like taking off in an airplane.

It will vary from person to person but that is our take. Ride Green first, if you like, then ride Orange.
