Mission: SPACE Question

Best roller coasters I've ridden for those interested: Six Flags Magic Mountain in Cali. You name it, I've been on it!
Magic Mountain is nice...Cedar Point is better. And if you love wooden coasters a trip to Holiday World in Santa Claus, IN is a must.

M:S just messes with my equilibrium for about ten minutes. No biggie. At least it doesn't hurt my neck like Body Wars used to!

Oh, and what fun would it be to not push any buttons and act like you know what you are doing? :) I push the buttons, I just don't look side-to-side or turn my head. I tried it once; bad plan, very bad plan. Almost :hurl:, but not quite!

I can do it a bunch of times in a row and not get sick, but that's just me.

Seriously, one of my favorite things to do is go on just to watch first-timers get scared to death in line with all the warnings, and come out with this shocked look on their face.

When you do... most likely you will look back on it like i did my SM fear as a kid. I kicked myself for not going on it for many trips because i was scared.... now, look at my avatar and is probably my favorite attraction behind SSE of course.

:animwink: good luck

You too with Space Mountain?? I never rode it until my Sr year in HS for the exact same reasons. I was a youthful wimp.

Thanks for all the input guys!

So in summary the advice from everyone is:

  • Don't do the ride on an empty stomach, but don't ride it immediately after lunch or after eating an icecream bar. Make sure you ate something a few hours earlier before you came to the park.
  • Keep your head back
  • Don't turn your head to look across the cabin
  • Eyes forward and focused on the screen
  • Play with the buttons and switches after you get strapped in... takes your mind off the pending unique ride sensations
  • Remember to try and breath normally during the G-forces...
  • And put a smile on your face.... you'll have a great time! :)

If you are still unsure and want to know the ride profile before trying the Orange Team.... then do the green first, so you will know where the g-forces kick in.

Thanks for the advice. When I'm brave enough to ride, I'll remember this!

You do not feel the ride as spinning. You feel like you are being shot out of a cannon. It is a great rush that doesn't really translate into any other WDW rides. I was a little shaky getting off the first time, but it was worth it. My only advise is, DO NOT EAT A TUNA WRAP BEFORE GOING ON THIS RIDE. (see other threads for reasoning.)

i say if your really woried, get some dramamine before you go, and take that, its what people take before they go on ships and planes. just pop one if your worried.

More than anything else (spinning, nausea producing movements) I'm nervous about being in what I have heard is a very tight space.

Anyone here not like tight spaces either and did fine on M:S?

Cedar Point is VERY nice as well. I haven't been there since about 2 or 3 year AFTER they built Millennium Force, but IMO, Six Flags Magic Mountain is still better.

I don't get how you can say this considering the G forces push you back instead of pushing you forward like a cannon would. Right?

If you were sitting in a car getting shot out of a cannon, your body would push back on the seat. It's the way the gravity forces and what-not work in that situation.

In either a cannon or a space ship, you would feel the same direction of force as you accelerated forward. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction!

Has to do with inertia too, as a body that is still will want to stay still, so when accelerated in any direction (through whatever means), that force has to overcome the desire of your body to stay still, and that is the G force you experience.

Mission Space operates on a similar, if slightly different force called centripetal force.

SCIENCE! </Bill Nye>

Ok, so just to clarify (b/c if I get sick on my trip and spend the whole day feeling badly, I'm gonna be mad at you people!) :p...

The green side does NOT spin? RIGHT? I can do all kinds of drops and rollercoasters, BUT, I cannot spin, it makes me sick and I stay sick for a few hours, so it's not an option. BUT, small spaces don't bother me, so will the green side be ok? There's NO SPINNING on green, right????

CHECK with CM's on duty BEFORE you do the green version of MS if you have any doubts. Enjoy your WDW visit! Duckberg

Green does not spin. But again, Orange spinning isn't like riding the tea cups or any of those rides. The spinning is there for an effect and that effect is the G force, not the spinning itself.

I just thought of another thing, for all of those who are questioning riding this... don't let the warnings inside freak you out. The warnings are there to protect Disney and to warn you about what's going on. They kinda freaked me out the first time I went on in that they're everywhere and in the pre-show. They have to be there but don't let them get to you. Of course, unless you do discover you may have a problem. Don't ignore the warnings, but don't let them freak you out so much.

tips from others that helped me:
bathroom first, do not ride immediately after eating, do not ride on an empty stomach, look straight ahead, steadily breath in through your nose and out through your mouth, keep head straight and against the headrest, keep eyes OPEN

I am also one who uses ginger tabs and bonine for my whole trip, and this helped me have no problems at WDW or at Universal when riding the Hulk and Fire & Ice

I couldn't have said anything more perfect myself for the rules to this ride to keep yourself from getting sick.

I wouldn't compare the spinning in M:S to the tea cups. I rode the ride when it first opened before I realzied it was a centrifuge and I had no idea we were spinning. (I hadn't given any thought to how the G-forces were simulated).

I'm pretty middle-of-the-raod in terms of motion sickness. And I definitely feel the effects of M:S. But it's never made me actually get sick.

Obviously, I wouldn't eat a ton before riding on it. But I also wouldn't recommend a completely empty stomach. And like the ride says, look straight ahead and don't close your eyes.

I've never known anyone who actually got sick on the ride. I know it happens, but I think people overestimate how often.
