Mission Space=Big Flop?

There IS a major difference in the experience and sickness levels of (Orange) M:S and practically any other thrill ride.

When older motion simulators like Star Tours and Body Wars were made, they were designed for the ride vehicle to sync as exactly as possible with the motion displayed on the screen. Any variation from that makes people sick.

M:S and its spinning throws that concept out the window, because you're actually NOT moving at all like what is portrayed on screen. That is why they blow air in your face, why they tell you not to look to the sides, and why there's barf bags in every ride vehicle.

For that and the bad publicity that came with it...along with the destruction of one of the best attractions to ever come out of WDI? Big Flop

I enjoy MS - sadly I've demoted myself to the Green version.

I would love for them to make it more variable - if you don't hit the buttons on time have it switch to a different adventure.
Tracey had to demote himself to the green team several years back, too. His high blood pressure did him in. His last orange team "spin" really scared him.

Ride once back when it was open for the first year before the green side came out. Had no idea it was a spinning ride, having just eaten, I knew I was in for it when I saw barf bags in the ride vehicles :( I got off that ride and ended up having to stop in Mexico to puke into one of the garbage cans! So embarrassing and will never ride it ever again!

I love it. One of few rides at Disney that makes my palms sweat and heart flutter while standing in line.

That's how I felt the first time I did Mission Space. Now it's kind of just "same thing, different day". Especially because there's no consequence if the assigned "roles" don't perform their task. <shrug>

Yeah...not really correct.

The problem with M:S has nothing to do with the film not syncing up because is does sync very well.

A simulator like Star Tours can only accurately simulate left and right, up and down motion. The action of moving forward and back wards is done by rapidly tilting the cabin forward or backwards and allowing you inner ear in concert with the video to fool your brain.

M:S does a similar trick, but the addition of positive G's really drive the point home even farther.

When you both of your inner ears are aligned with the rotational arc of a centrifuge, like they are when your head is back and straight, and you have no contradictory visual stimuli (eg can't see that you are spinning) you brain thinks that you are going forward. The air on your face and the video reinforce this.

However, when you tilt your head moving your inner ears out of alignment with this arc, your brain thinks you are tumbling. This is what will produce serious motion sickness in even some of the most hardcore thrill ride passengers.

Really? Last time I was navigator I didn't hit my buttons in time and the the captain (the buck stopped with her) was subjected to a very violent flogging in the middle of Sunshine Seasons. I felt a bit guilty, but I was soon distracted by the wide array of snackie poos available.

The song they play in the post ride might be the best Disney ride song thing ever. They should figure out a way to make that more prominent.

DBF and I love this ride (Orange side) and actually do enjoy riding it numerous times. One of our fondest memories from our November 2010 trip was riding it three times in a row. Wait time was listed a 5 minutes which is about how long it takes to walk from the entrance to the load area.

That song is horrid.

I never tried the ride. I was considering it even before the green side but one look at the sample cabin at the entrance to the ride convinced me not to even attempt it. I don't like the idea of being confined in such a small area. They should have built Mission Space where Wonders of Life is and kept Horizons.

I won't ride it for one reason....someone told me that as long as I stare directly at the screen, and DO NOT LOOK TO EITHER SIDE OF THE SCREEN, I'll be ok.

Well, after hearing that, you just KNOW that curiosity will get the better of me and I am gonna have to look to either side, if only for a second...and I'm not willing to take that chance that I won't.

The Movie that it was based on (They don't want to mention that it REALLY is) was a Box Office Flop...This would be considered a Double Whammy for me..

But, if you also consider the "Theme" Song for this Attraction "Destiny" It rounds it off as a Triple Trifecta of Blah..

Now, THAT, is some honest self appraising.

This. I was told this before the first time I ever went on it and I did the same exact thing. Gave me a terrible headache for a few hours afterwards. However, I've been on it since without looking to the sides and really enjoyed the ride and felt fine afterwards.

DD loved it starting at age 9. I have some pretty major motion sickness issues, but being the good father I agreed to do it once with her (DW has done it a couple times, but isn't a huge fan of the sensation). Anyway, did I get sick - no. Did I feel less than stellar - yes. Was it fun? Yes - because I was with a 9 year old who loved every minute of it and loved the fact that she could handle it better than her 40-something dad!

In her opinion, it is a huge success. In my opinion, it is a huge success for my daughter. I've had fun on green. Don't need to do orange again. Would love an update because the Gary Sinise material is SOOOO bad.
