Master Yoda's wild hair.

Let me set the scene for you......

The wife and I are in a movie theater with two of our three daughters waiting for the trailers to start. I lean over to my wife and say "You know. Disney shoots the MK 4th of July fireworks on the 3rd and the 4th. You feel like trying to get an ADR at California Grill or Kona cafe for tonight and heading to WDW in a few hours?" I got a resounding "H E double hockey sticks yes!" from my wife. As soon as we got home we went online and secured an ADR. As expected CG was booked solid but there was a 9:55 ADR open at Kona. We packed up the kiddies and headed to the promise land about 4:15

The weather was pretty bad in the sunshine state yesterday. We ran in and out of very heavy rain the whole way down and passed a couple of fender benders. The typical 2.5 hour drive took about 3.25 but we arrived at the poly about 7:30. When we got to the Poly the parking lot was on the typical 4th of July lock down. No entry without an ADR or room reservation. We had an ADR but my wife left the print out of the ADR at home and since we had just made the ADR about 5 hours prior were not on the list the security guard had. We were told to circle around and leave. I opted for hidden option 2....free valet thanks to TiWL.

I was a bit worried about the beach at the Poly already being full but thanks to a fairly steady drizzle the beach was all but deserted. We headed down to my favorite spot between the hill and the TTC and made camp beneath some palm trees.

The thunderclouds were building but it was going to take more than a little water to dampen our pixie dust saturated spirits.

Thankfully the Disney weather control machines kicked on and the skies cleared and the fireworks went off right on time. The video below is about a -4 on a quality scale of 1 to 10 but I am still getting use to this new fangled motion picture machine so be kind.

After the fireworks we headed to Kona and they were able to get us in about 20 minutes early. Dinner was simply incredible. Kona is very rapidly becoming one of my favorite restaurants on property.

There is no better way to start dinner than with the Kona press pot.

My 16 year old Zoie had the Mickey shaped ravioli

My 9 year old Riley opted for a Claifornia roll and fries (yes. We dropped her a lot as a small child) Just an FYI the California roll at Kona roll is more like a candy roll and as expected Riley did not care for it. In typical Disney fashion they took it off the bill without even being asked to.

My wife had the Pan Asian noodles which were very good.

I tried something different and went with the Tuna Oscar. It was mighty tasty. I had it as rare as they would serve it and it had the perfect balance of spice and flavor.

Now we come to dessert

Riley got the Kona Kone

P1300729.JPG

Zoie went with the White Chocolate cheese cake.

As usual my wife got the Banana-Chocolate Creme Brulee

I had a little trouble deciding between the Kilauea Torte and the Coconut Cream Kiki Tart. I took the advice of the great Geddy Lee and decided not to decide and had both.

After dinner we ran into a friend from the forums and caught up for a bit. But all good things must come to an end. With our bellies full we reluctantly headed home. The trip home was a little better than the ride down and we pulled in the driveway a little after 1 AM.

It was quite a fun day and well worth the 6-7 hour drive although next year I think we will plan ahead a little and get an ADR at CG 180 days out.

Sounds like a great time. Riley got Abby's favorite dessert and Zoie got mine. I knew I liked those kids! Glad you guys had fun.

How cool is that! Geez, a spur of the moment decision for us would require about a 14 hour drive...each way! Very awesome! Glad y'all got to see the fireworks (they looked incredible). Dinner sounded wonderful. I've been curious about trying Kona for dinner. Hhhmmmm.....

Thanks for the write-up with the pics. Awesome stuff. Why don't you go back down and do something else so we can see that, too!

Cool report. How lucky are you to be able to decide that morning 'let's go to Disney!'.

Feeling very jealous sitting here over 4000 miles away

Nice video, no way is that a -4 on a quality scale of 1 to 10! No crazy zooming and rock solid on a tripod - nice work.

Not old, just vintage.
Great video. Definitely not a -4. Throw in some source audio and you would have a solid 7 on your hands. I really hope that I live close enough sometime in the near future to be able to decide at breakfast to have dinner at WDW one night.

So good to be able to hop into the car on the spur of the moment and take a visit. The food looks amazing, I'd love to try eating there if I get the opportunity on my trip.

What a great spur of the moment decision! I spent last night's fireworks telling my mom how in less than two weeks we'd be in Disney with the GOOD fireworks. A little girl around six years old heard me and we had a discussion about how much better it is at Disney. Looks like your family had a fun night!

And I want that Kona Cone!

As if any member of your family would say no to such an obviously superb idea. Great mini report. Not only did you throw in a random Rush reference, you included some great pics. Top notch stuff.

Yup...a random Rush refrence makes pretty much any thread totally worthwhile.

My Uncle has a country place, no one knows about...

Thanks for the kind words guys. Last second trips to WDW are one of the greatest perks to living in Florida and those completely unplanned trips tend to be the most fun. It is nice to be able to throw caution to the wind and just see what happens.

you should move to Tampa. Spur of the moment trips can get you there in 45 minutes if traffic agrees. :king:

If we move anywhere else in Florida Lakeland is the most likely candidate unless we can get into the property behind MK along Reams Rd.
